Reported that Greg Broughton of Fremantle has been put on the trade table. I like him as a player, is a real possession accumulator and a passage out of defense. Seems to have tweaked his game a bit recently to become more accountable and attacking in the contest, hence his tackling numbers have increased of late (probably due to Lyon).

Definitely worth a go IMO but the only thing I see is difficulty in determining his value at the table. Thoughts?

A pass I think - pretty much the same role as Nicho?

I suppose that's a similar role to Nicho but Broughton is a much better player at this stage.

should not be a pass.

Melbourne should get him in and actually play him in his correct role and position.. usually kills it there.

What's his position? I thought he was pretty much back pocket?

Broughton is an inside midfielder and should be played as such. When played in the guts, few others can extract a footy like he can. Natural ball winner. I'd love to have him at MFC if the opportunity ever arose, I've got a lot of time for him.

Stats looked pretty good, until he sustained that finger injury.

His stats fell away when he was playing with his injury (understandable)

He seems to have a high tackle count.....

Did I read somewhere that he ran 3rd in their B & F this year? Last year?

Do you have the details of this report? I've had a quick search but can't locate anything.

Would of thought GB was a keeper for the Dorkers.

In his debut season i'm pretty sure he was averaging pretty close to 30 disposals a game! then Lyon was appointed these numbers seemed to fall a great deal as he was playing a completely different position. He was quite impressive in his debut year.

Would like him at the dees, but what could they use to get a trade done? Is Melbourne even interested in him?

I'd be surprised if we had room on our list for any more players on our list outside the trades already mooted. With Dawes, Petersen, Ray, Byrnes, Viney, Pick 4 and apparent promotions of Nicholson and Evans we've already added 8 without trying. Surely we will be leaving some room for new draftees.

Yes, but I think we may only take 4, Viney, and one other pick in the draft at this stage.

He is also very much a need and I am certain that Neeld's eyebrows would be raised, as Nasher said it would be hard to see him getting across with all that is going on.

Good rebounding HBFs are crucial. I would take him over Ray or Wellingham.

The other thing is that it's hard to see how we're going to pay other clubs for any more quality players as all our worthwhile picks (other than 4) seem to be tied up in all this other stuff, so we'll have nothing left to bargain with. If these other trades get up, i'd our involvement in the trade period to conclude.

Yes, unless we are ready to put a chip on the table (ie. Sylvia) we are running out things to play with.

... assuming that Pick 20 goes on Dawes.

If Pies want too much on top of Pick 20 for Dawes, would Broughton be worth Pick 20 by itself?

Broughton is all class, I doubt that he would be on the table.

And not sure we would have the any picks/players to get the deal done.

I'd rather give up pick 20 for Broughton, and get Gumby instead of Dawes.

Freo have announced that he is on the trade table.

Agree re pick 20, he is definitely worth it. Wouldn't give up anymore than that though.

Not sure this is correct. My reading is that Moloney and Byrnes do not cancel each other out in terms of compensation; Geelong and MFC will each get a pick of some sort. Similarly if Rivers goes (and even Dunn), the compensation is not cumulative; we get 2 picks (or 3 if Dunn goes).

So we already have 1 extra pick; just where it is we find out on Friday. Maybe more to come (Rivers & Dunn, even Bate).

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
