Pick 20 options

Vlastuin may still be available at 20 and Matt McDonough (strong small forward who kicked a few in the championships) though he could slide a bit. I think both of these would definitely add to our deficiencies.

Heard from a guy who is friends with this Vlastuin character, and Neeld interviewed him at the Combine, however he looked him in the eye and told him I don't want to play for Melbourne, something about the bad culture. Absolute rubbish for an 18 year old kid- I feel like gone are the days were its an honour to play in the league, 18 year old's lead by this Josh Caddy idiot think they pick and choose what happens.

I hope Viney splits that little **** in half.

Jeez that is really bad if true. I was always under the impression that Vlastuin was level headed and very professional so that is interesting.

It makes me angry that a kid can make a comment like that without knowing anything about the inner workings of the club. How about just being grateful for the opportunity that very few get and so many would kill for.

To add to that, I have a feeling Kennedy will slip to late teens, maybe (hopefully) even our pick at 20.

Unfortunatly by the time St. Kilda and Port receive their free agent compensation (which I suspect will be mid 1st round picks) that our pick 20 will turn into pick 22 and can't see Kennedy slipping that low.

Laine Wilkins is my personal favourite for around there. Quick outside goal kicking midfielder who's a good mark. Another WA kid, so having 2 of them come over at the one time may help them settle. Or it could make no difference and I may be talking rubbish!

I really don't believe that an 18 year old potential draftee would be saying that.....I reckon it's complete rubbish.......My aunties best friend's house mate said Viney said the same thing......Come on keep it real......

And when we look at the interview with Dom Barry on DeeTV, that kid is over the moon at being on an AFL list. He looks like he has to hold himself back from punching the air and yelling 'yeehhhh!!!'. Now there is a kid who is working hard to be the best footballer he can.

Not sure I'd fully believe the Vlastuin story though. Surely this kid would know that if Neeld repeated that story to the AFL he'd be in trouble. Could be construed as draft tampering by some.

states that his knee is good, and that troy's injuries were caused by collisions rather than weak joints

Yep, they're all risks in picking draft choices.

those who will or won't make it. and then add the possability of the injury issue.

For me a pass.

They're are plenty of talented kids around at this pick.

With talks stalled between gws and giles is there a chance we could trade martin/spencer (replacement ruck) + petterd (hard bodied fwd, perfect 3rd tall behind cameron and patton) + pick 20 for pick 13 back.

Mfc net loss to gws- pick 3 + martin/spencer + petterd

Mfc net gain from gws- hogan + barry

seems almost weighted in gws favour but the player we could get at 13 compared to 20 could be significant. also what would we really be giving up in terms of players? I can see all 3 struggle to get a game in years ahead as gawn/fitz take over the ruck and petterd cant get a game now and our forward line is a shambles so they would not be a huge loss. especially if we are able to then use picks 4 and 13 to draft ready to go types

Suprised no one here has mentioned Josh Simpson.

He seems to have really slipped under the rader on DL and it expected to go slightly prior to 20. That said he could also slip as if he went under the radar at DL perhaps his gone under the radar of recruiters :P

Josh Simpson (WA – Mid/Fwd)

Height: 183cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 09/02/1994

Recruited from: East Fremantle

Style: Daniel Wells

Player comparison:

Range: 15-50

Profile: Simpson has been one of the more interesting prospects over the past few years moving from WA to SA in 2011 to make the state squad then back to WA this season. Simpson has great acceleration and on a wing can do some damage. Gets through traffic easily. Generally good ball user by both hand and foot and by foot is duel sided. Still has a very lean build and I expect him to always be more of an outside player but I have been encouraged in the past with his attack on the ball and on the man despite his lean build. Has talent and while I think he will be rated very differently from club to club I expect a few clubs to be very keen to get someone with his talents on their list.

It's the lean build stuff that scares me off, re todays congested footy. If he was built like Peter Matera, with the aggression to match, as a kid,,, I'd certainly be listening, but as it is, not so much atmo.

I'm more hopeful of filling our needs of hardness mostly. Uncompromising types first, then flashy types as we can afford them.

I don't think they'd take rubbish + rubbish + 20 for 13. I feel that GWS manage their list well and will realise that it is in better shape without Spencer and Petterd on it.

Don't mind the lateral thinking though, could work if we had something better to offer up.

Neeld should draft this Vlastuin kid and make him pay for that comment on the training track.

I'm sure he ll come through after enough punishment.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly hearsay becomes fact on this forum... it seems like just yesterday that people were lambasting Dawes over his refusal to speak to the MFC.

I can't see Vlastuin slipping outside top 10 let alone 20 but we can still hope. He is reminiscent of Toby Greene and Taylor Adams from last year, tough hard at it clearance players with clean disposal, these sorts are low risk you know he will make an impact and contribute form day dot just might not have the upside in terms of athleticism as the top 5.

That is true. The way I see it is that there are a number of players (probably around 20) who are all rated top 10 or so by various experts and recruiting commentators. Hence there have to be at least a couple of players that are rated highly by some camps (hopefully the MFC) available at 20.

No disrespect to you DL7 but I find that ridiculous and I'm surprised you think it worthy of repeating here. It could well be the private thoughts of the bloke but I prefer to think someone has made it up. How do YOU reckon you'd go as an 18 YO standing up in front of a senior AFL coach and s room full of recruiters and fo all intents saying F*** Off!

Doesn't sound very plausible does it?

At the same time ppl on these boards will rightfully slag off a journo for repeating any "rumour" as if it is fact

To be fair, he did say he 'heard it from a bloke...' so it's not like he's quoting it as fact. Although his comments afterwards indicate that he believes it to be true.

I agree though that it doesn't sound plausible.

An all too common reflection on society itself. these types of little $%^ts think the world owes them something and arent prepared to put in the hard yards for success. Demand for instant gratification. The type of kid Viney would not tolerate in the rooms id say

I doubt if this is true but let's say it is for a moment. Neeld would have torn shreds off this kid and told him to get stuffed. How a 18 year old outsider can not only comment on our culture but also say it to Mark Neeld's face is staggering.

Colcohoun?

Atkins would be good.

I'm starting to think we should go after some small, strong, running players, who can play defence or forward.

Go after a 'Gumbleton' now we have Hogan. a 3rd Rnd type tall forward, who'll crash & bash.

Totally agree.

None taken. I find myself firmly intrenched with a group of friends who have been drafted or are about to be drafted and therefore it enables me to hear things like this. The exact person who told me this is actually Jack Viney's best friend and he said Jack who is friends with Nick was wooing him but for whatever reason decided he wasnt interested in playing at Melbourne.

My comment was as much about how the world has changed that enables kids to say that. You say I can't believe an 18 year old would do it, but Josh Caddy a 20 year old just DID.

We'll see, the same bloke told me he was ALL over Jackson Macrae, JV's friend from Carey, and make it very clear he'd love to select him. Not sure he'd take him over Wines at now pick 4 but interesting to see the type of player he likes.

I would trade it for Dawes but does anyone know the draft rules I think we have to use a minimum 3 picks in draft

No sweat. Even if we trade #20, we will use 4, 26 (Viney) and at least one 3rd rounder. Or instead of the third rounder, maybe something more tasty given to us for FA/RFA compensation.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
