Wellingham/Dawes super trade (scuppered)

No way. I am all for getting some experience into the club but Wellingham clearly wants to go to the Eagles and Dawes is coming off an average year. Bring in some AFL ready bodies but don't get your pants pulled down at the same time, Dees!

Dawes for 26 is reasonable.

Wellingham plus Dawes for 14 plus a player like Martin Is reasonable.

Anything more in favour of the pies than those scenarios and you start to think about walking away. Steak knives fine but no more.

What's come into play here is Neeld's recognition hat his coaching career could be over before it began unless we produce wins in 2013. He's in a catch-22 between needing immediate experience and muscle and the supporter's demands that we save our prize picks for the best available 18yo's.

That said, like others I will be very disappointed if this "mega" trade comes to fruition. It wil be a very disheartening development for the club.

So he brings the club down to a farce just to save face?

Imagine if Hawthorns board had not listened to the fans in '96.

And are you really saying Dawes is as good as Dangermouse?

What?!?!?! That is ...... ummmm ....... an interesting interpretation of what is happening.

Point 1- The difference between the merger vote and the drafting/trading of players is that one is a democratic process, while the other is a decision made by paid professionals who are experts in this specific area. The situations are related only in that they both involve football. It's like me saying that you can live on Earth, which is a planet, so you must be able to live on Mars because it is also a planet.

Point 2- Dawes and Dangerfield weren't ever linked in playing ability. The only link made was:

Melbourne considers a Dawes trade -> Social media campaign -> Ignored <- Social media campaign <- Adelaide selects Dangerfield over Ebert

It's all about the futility of a social media campaign, despite your misguided belief that you are worth listening to.

Not "I" but "We." We, as a body, are worth listening to. A club can't exist without the support of it's fans. There is a reason that Cam Schwab posts on these boards from time to time. The club understand that they need to keep an eye on what the supporters are thinking. If enough supporters take a particular stance, it is something for them to take note of, even if they then decide to follow ignore it and continue on their way.

Wait a few moments while I attempt to contrive rage and disgust at the possibility of an imaginary trade scenario which has been touted by an unknown source and spouted by some journalist prior to the actual start of trade week and prior to the comencement of the negotiations and discussions between the clubs actually involved in the said scenario.

IF we are seriously considering it, then, yes, that is probably what is going on. However I think (or hope) that Collingwood has used #4 as a starting point and we - being interested in the duo but not at that price - didn't laugh in their faces because we are interested in seeing what the real price is.

Or maybe this is just so much furphy and bumf as is usual at this time of year.

We know that club powerbrokers read this site and occasionally post on it. So, let's send them a message ....

DO NOT give up our draft pick gold for B and C graders or you will face a supporter backlash. The mooted Dawes/Wellingham 'super deal' is nothing of the sort for Melbourne and would mark a serious decline in the premiership outlook for the club.

The supporters understand the need for an injection of experience, but not at that price.

Picks 3 and 4 MUST BE OFF LIMITS unless bona-fide A-grade quality is being offered in return. No compromises.

I also disagree strongly with trading Nathan Jones, the changing of our club colours to lilac and tangerine and adopting Pokemon as our new Mascot.

I'm with you, but in all honesty I couldn't see them being silly enough to entertain it anyway. Another cheap headline to join the multitude at this time of year!

It could be ... or who knows the deal may go through in the first half hour of tomorrow! Emma uayle seems definite on discussions taking place.

So let's make a noise about it!!

We are getting absolutely shafted by the pies over these so called super trades! what the ^&*% is neeld thinking?! The pies have brought in a 30yr old has been to replace this guy we are willing to give pick 4 for!!!!

I hope its not another "bomber" assistant thing, like the blues had? that would really, rile', me.

The issue for me is we don't NEED to have both or either of them. There are alternative solutions. That really is our point of leverage. Yeah they'd be handy but it's not imperative. Collingwood on the other hand NEED to unload/do something.

I'd sit and wait, continue looking elsewhere , make the Filth sweat a bit and lower their sights some.

Hang tough here Melbourne, not the end of the world to not get them

Do you really need to ruin an entertaining debate with personal slurs Bob? As for the rest of your comment, one prophet of doom may be an easily ignored madman but many are much more worthy of attention.

I guess I can understand Melbourne's perspective on this one if it does go through. The MFC has repeatedly stated that they want to replace HWRALASKWWPABMWBGAAIBTHPPITGFSTWRITT100PASFHTPFTGUAGKOTDWAA2PDPTWFOTCHCERTU,OAINLHAAHHSH in terms of experience i.e. 3-4 seasons + AFL exposure. It's important to note that the reports suggest that we won't consider trading pick 4 if we have to use 3 on Viney.

So everyone knows as compensation, we received 4 + 13*.

In essence, if this trade goes through... our draft result including compensation for Scully will look like.

Pick 3 - ND

Pick 13* - ND

Pick 26* - Viney

Trade - Wellingham/Dawes

While no compensation = Pick 3 + Pick 26* (one of which is used for Viney)

I see how the first scenario could be enticing because; we have included 2 senior AFL experienced players that will improve our team, we are still gaining an extra selection in the first round with pick 13, and essentially we are nabbing two top 5 draft selections with pick 3 and Viney.

The problem I have is that using pick 4 for those two players is ludicrous. To attest to that, Wellingham’s manager says West Coasts second or third pick would be sufficient compensation for Collingwood while Dawes is being shown the door to accommodate other players.

After effing up our early draft selections over the last 10 years we have chance to remedy the situation and set the club up for 10 years plus, so the last thing we need is to have a "quick fix"/"win a few games" attitude that will set us back years. If we do this deal we will confirm to the rest of the football world, and a huge number of Melbourne supporters that we are indeed rabble.

We continually repeat our mistakes and by behaving like a "leper club" we become one; allowing the fact Wellingham doesn't want to come to us to leak out in to the public domain does us an enormous amount of harm. For us to go out and chase him now is just plain embarrassing, even more so if we have offered up a top pick in a super draft, I sincerely hope this is wrong and that the club will come out and deny it.

For Christ's sake why can't we do these things in private and why do we always seem to be incompetent.

Certainly wasn't a personal slur. I think it's reasonable to suggest that Neeld, Harrington etc. wouldn't consider your views on football to be worth listening to. They are part of the industry and you are a poster on a fan site. I'd be disappointed if they thought any differently.

The point is that you don't know what's really happening. Nor do you have the skills that immersion in the industry would give you. And just because you have a bunch of people who are similarly misguided, it doesn't mean that it's worth listening to. It may make you feel better, but it won't make any difference whatsoever.

I agree with you. We should have seen Wellingham picking West coast as a positive and put a line through his name. We then could have played hard ball with the pies with regards to Dawes as he isn't worth much considering his form and the need for the pies to move him on. Instead it feels like the MFC is trading cards with a older brother who dupes them into believing they are getting the best deal. If we want to win games get the pies reject players. If we want to win a flag TELL 'EM TO GET STUFFED!

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
