I suspect Rivers will be swapping the Yarra for the Barwon.

According to the herald this morning, Geelong are apparently frontrunners.

..... because he knows Andrew Mackie

really? is that all it takes for a player to leave the MFC *sigh*

Rivers is UNRESTRICTED. If he wants to go he is gone.

It doesn't mean he still can't accept a MFC contract though - Un-restricted just means the MFC have no options if he choses not to accept an MFC contract

PS - sorry redleg - probably what you were trying to say

That and finals, a great culture and the chance to be a really important part of their backline.

Good luck to Jared, has given his all to the MFC and not had alot of success, I really hope to see him playing finals next year.

Seriously Jared, enough already. If you want to play for the MFC next year, sign a contract and be done with it. If you want to leave, show some kohunas and come out and say it.

I can understand wanting to play finals with Geelong, but moving to another bottom half side would see a lot of people lose respect for you.

You've been a good player, but hardly a superstar, so don't expect people to make a big song and dance to keep you around.

We've only had one day of free agency so far. Give the guy a break. I can understand him taking his time to make this decision. Leaving the club you've played for for nearly a decade is not an easy choice. If he goes to the Cats I can fully understand as he deserves to get to play finals after such a good career to date.

I am with Paul Roos FA is going to kill weaker clubs as players understandably seek some success, those to go will be mature skilled players needed by the weaker clubs.

Really is a disgrace there is no hope of levelling the playing field. Draft picks wont do it because the younger players wont be playing in a mature culture.

It is sad to see. Port will be the first to fold.

Be interesting how they do it once the full FA period can be viewed in a months time.

I do too - in red and blue.

But how?

Another load of immature teenagers are never going to quickly replace the mature bodied experienced players who are the free agents.

Good draft picks have currency in the Trade period if we want to use them to get mature players.

All clubs need a blend of young and old, and FA only delivers the old...

my above post is in reference to Brent Moloney.

I doubt he could play on our list in 2013.

He wants out.

Ok, fair enough. But that comes completely out of left field, given the post you were responding to...

Andrew Mackie - I thought someone was saying he would be a demon for a moment. Ahhh to dream...

Free agency so far just seems like a game of Survivor where Port Adelaide and the Demons have started an alliance that doesnt have the votes to beat the other one...

Why couldnt free agency come in while we were in the top 8??

The recruitment period consists of FA, trades and draft.

We have cash and draft picks, and the glamour clubs are blowing their budgets on the first day.

We'll do ok out of this recruitment period, even if FA part is a flop.

lets face it - free agents in the twilight of their careers will want success or more game time. So we werent probably ever going to be well placed for them.

Paul Roos is a [censored] of the highest order.

Nah, there's no way Fitzroy required their captain and best player in 1995.

I wait with bated breath for someone in the media to challenge him on this. I doubt it'll happen, though.

Why would Rivers sign as soon as possible when he knows that we have a huge amount of cap space? Anyone with half a brain would try to use their free agent status to claim some of the extra money available.

So why the song and dance? ;-)

We should be, but stuffed up badly.

Speak to Barry Prendergast. The AFL have given us many chances.

The Club F$&@ked them all up.

We supporters are left to deal with the rubble.

Rivers may be set to stay with Melbourne after reconsidering his stance on free agency.

So DemonChris, you have 11 posts. One makes an unsubstantiated statement about Rivers one makes an unsubstantiated claim about Frawley.

Are you simply trolling? Or just prone to boredom?

Does anyone know if Frawley has "bought in"?

No Sh*t. why is the footy public just getting this?!

No Sh*t. why is the footy public just getting this?!

The whole free agency thing is driven by the Players Association.

The AFL fought for a number of years but they knew one day a player would take them to court and the AFL would lose.

Then the whole Salary Cap / drafting system would fall apart.

It is the players that are to blame here along with their demands that the min. a club can pay is 95% of the total.

This is all about what the Players union see as maximising their salary's

The thing they miss is before long a club will fall over and then 40 of them will be unemployed.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
