Not to mention, coupled with Moloney leaving, we could even accrue enough FA points for an after-1st-round-pick as compensation >> anyone interested in securing pick 5??

I've mentioned this on another thread, but where does it say that FA points are totalled or that our FA movements will net 1 pick?

Andersen has said they are using a points system and alot of assumptions have been made henceforth.

I don't think anyone knows exactly what will happen until it happens.

Rivers is an underrated player..... He'll look a lot better at the cats...... The Geelong players and culture, will lift Rivers to new heights in the game.... His solid player and it will seem that he has improved his game, but really it will be the new culture and new start that improves his game.... Much like the Josh Gibson transformation, from north too the hawks....

He's not a devastating loss for us..... But he'll be great gain for the cats....

Yeah fair enough. I don't believe teams will only get one pick. It just seems like another absurd trade scenario to me ie trade 16 spuds and get an A grader. I reckon the top comp will be almost as rare as rocking horse poo and I don't think the AFL would want to dilute the first round anymore than it has to.

Most likely is with teams gaining and losing FA's we'll see a heap of 2nd/3rd round picks, multiple picks to some teams.

I have elaborated on this in various threads but I think a team will get a pick for every net player they lose, according to their 'points.' so if we lose two players and only gain Byrnes we will get one pick to the points left over. If we lose 3 players we will get 2 picks according to the points left over (probably split in half as evenly as possible).

Again, I don't think we will know exactly how it works until it happens. Another half-arsed effort by the AFL IMO.

That makes sense, but it's probably not convoluted enough for the AFL HQ.

I wonder if they'll use Mike's top 50 as a ready reckoner?

Disagree. The way I read it is that the AFL will add your players gained and deduct your players lost points and if you are in debit, you get a pick to best represent that total.

I could only see you getting more than 1 pick, if for example you lost 2 star players to high offers and you gained no one.

Maybe Mike will need to increase his ratings to a top 700?

That's another option and while minimises the picks given it concentrates the compensation more than the way mine does.

If we lose Bate, Moloney, and Rivers we should get two middling picks and not one good pick.

I also think that a 'pick' should be seen as a replacement of a player and that is why I would give as many picks as a team 'net lost' in FA.

I guess we will find out...

Posted

If a few middle players can add together to equal a "good pick" we'll have to revisit a whole heap of "rubbish trades" suggested by D'landers over the years.

Petterd, Bate, Dunn, Bennell, Jurrah and Pick 52 for Tippett?

Wonder how many guys we'd have in the top 650?

I shied away from including that in my post, lest I brought about an old argument...

I guess with the lack of definitive information the AFL has provided means all scenarios are possible. One of problems I have with rolling all FA points into one pick is that it would disadvantage the finalists too much. If a finalist was to lose several band 2 compensation players and received a band 1 compo pick, they'd basically be sacrificing 2 picks to move up only a couple of positions. The numbers are already skewed for finalists, particularly the top 4 odd teams who's band 1 (first round pick after their normal selection) and band 2 compensation (end of first round) are basically the same.

Free Agency came about to help player movement. By handing out more lesser compensation picks gives clubs flexibility to do more trades and facilitate player movement.

Under the heading 'Rivers to become a Cat'. I don't know how reputable the source is, but Rohan Connolly pumps up their tyres on twitter. A bit of a lol beginning the article with 'Melbourne's hellish season continues'. While it'll be sad if he goes, we'll be compensated, and if we had been dead keen to keep him, he wouldn't have been in the death row 11 who werent getting their contracts renewed until after the season, as leaked to the paper in August.

JT I think JR is exploring the options he is most likely looking at his last contract so he needs the largest salary he can get and able to play in finals if possible.

If he cannot get to a good side for better or similar money to the MFc . He will probably take the money and run.

If that happens to be Brisbane good for him.

They will go close to the eight next year.

If he got there with a sizable pay increase he would be far better off the staying at the MFC.

The MFc will again struggle in 2013, if it comes down to Port with a sizable salary increase he is still better off and they will still probably finish higher then the MFC.

I like Riv, If he wants success before he finishes, I hope he goes to either The Hawks, Lions, Cats, Swans or Crows. Where ever he fits best.

If he cant get a go at one of these clubs, maybe he'll stay home.

Article is well written and sounds very plausible and reasonable. If this guy walked into the offices of the Australian tomorrow and applied for a sportswriting gig, that Denham fellow would be out of a job in a trice.

Good luck to Riv. He's been a good servant and deserves success. With us, he might find himself on the outer as we employ a youth policy.

I like Riv and hope he stays, but if not I'm not going to worry about it too much. He's a good player that will never be a great, and we'll cover the loss without too much pain.

That 3 years for Jamar might turn out to be one of our bigger fails in this next rebuild.

3 years is an absolute joke given his obvious limitaions

Nver been a fan nevr kicked goals never took marks nver chased nver filled in one kick behind the play

nver fierce

In my opinion a rockstar in his own mind

MFC will regret the 3 years however i think he may retire hurt early definitley not a grade

it will probably turn out about as fair, just and equitable as the tribunal points system, in other words another epic Dumbitriou fail. :-(((

Wow. Probably one of the more uninformed posts I've read on here, and that's saying something.

    TRAINING: Monday 20th January 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
