WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CAMERON PEDERSEN

IMO we've done very well so far in the F/S, mini-draft, FA and trade period and we're not done yet.

Pick 3 for Viney, 13 for Dawes, no Hogan - that's a possible alternative scenario.

I do agree that if we are not using picks, then obviously we can over pay on those picks to get deals done. That is logical and efficient. It does seem like we might only have 4, JV and maybe one other pick.

4, JV and a rookie upgrade or a mature player no-one else is after at that pick and there's been a lot of crying here over nothing.

Guest José Mourinho

I get the strong feeling that was GWS negotiating to ensure they got 3 and 13. But yes it was a great get for JV at 27.

Of course they were. But it was still a good deal for us, and what we wanted.

Both clubs won; we didn't get stooged.

In who's opinion yours, MN has targeted players he wants not what supporters want and thank christ for that.

Totally agree! My questionmark was about our level of savviness.

Please elaborate. Besides from media speculation, which is all any of this is, what have we done wrong? And how did we stuff up the Dawes deal?

Yes, I am only going on what is in the media (like the rest of DL's). Again, my questionmark is about savviness. Apparently we offered pick 13 for Dawes early in the process so when that was gone, pick #20 wasn't enough and we gave up pick 45 for 58. Not saying we stuffed it up but maybe we showed our hand too early....maybe pick 45 would get us Pederson, who knows. Did we show our hand too early for Pederson if we offered a 2nd round pick we didn't have?

Overall, I like the new players added and yes lets go after the targets we want but in the immortal words of Kenny Rogers '...you've got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them and know when to walk away.'

Just saying, don't want us to be seen as easybeats at the negotiating table and get a reputation that once we target a player we will pay the asking price. That is not negotiating! This year sets the tone for future years.

Don't care if we overpay for Pedersen and Ray.

If we aren't intending to use the picks then they, like Martin, are useful only if they get our intended targets.

If Martin, 49 and 63 gets Pedersen and Ray then that is the plus on what has been an A grade offseason.

Agree rpfc - on paper a pick in the 30's may be overs for Pederson, but if we trade away Martin for that pick and on-trade to North (effectively trading Martin for Pederson) I wouldn't be unhappy.

All well and good but I would have thought other than 4and26 they WOULD still look at a couple and the higher the pick the better.

Pointless just throwing away any value

Can't remember when but EQ actually thought this would end up a multi club trade-swap and happen around midweek. Might well be the case.

I like the trade time but it's too long now.

Get it done and get them kitted out and on the track.

Let's build this team, let's get serious!!

Agree. We effectively gave up pick 3 for Hogan, and 13 for Dawes and Barry. Given Dawes was a main target, and we had no available picks between 4 and 48, excepting 13, I think they dealt pretty well.

The way I see it - we've essentially used the trade period as a total to get Hogan for pick 13 and 26 for Dawes.

I think the whole way along we knew we needed a pick higher than 26 to get the Dawes deal done, so we happily traded 3 and 13 for Hogan and Dawes - with 3 essentially being the pick we would've had to burn on Viney.

3, 4, 13 and 26 has turned into Viney, 4, Hogan, Dawes and Barry.

Viney and 4 were a given already. The way he's rated, pick 13 looks a steal for Hogan and I don't think we'd have nabbed Dawes if we only had pick 26/27 to offer. Not sure about Barry, obviously, but we've basically used picks 13 and 26 for Hogan, Dawes and Barry.

I think we've done well - but it'll be up to the coaches and development to make it a successful period.

But Ray is far more what we need. Broughton is more a lock down type, or small defender, whereas Ray is the outside player we don't have enough of.

I'd far rather Ray.

Yep - anything that gets MacDonald out of the backline.

Pederson was VERY highly rated in his younger days. I bloke i know in the know all be it at a local footy level remembers him being a stand out talent early on. Whether he fell out with Scott or what ever this bloke reckons Ped will be a great pick up for the dees. Has leadership and discipline and this bloke reckons he will bigger than Dawes for us. Time will tell i guess but interesting comments.

If our targets are not kids, but experienced AFL players - what does 'value throwing' mean to us?

We have our targets and we have our means - how we are perceived means little to me if our means get our targets.

Won the b&f for the vfl side this year too. Given that he will most likely be delisted anyway I don't think it's gonna cost much to get him. Only thing that will complicate matters will be interest from other clubs

I very much doubt pick 26 is our last effort in the draft. You'd think we'd want at least a 3rd rounder for the last dip,not use it senselessly and unnecessary on a player no other team seems to want including the one he's currently at.

I'm not arguing that Pedersen isn't of use/value to us But surely the deal can be done for a bottom pick, a slab and a packet of beer nutsv!!

The following link is a fascinating read on BF's North forum. Pedersen is certainly rated by nearly every supporter, but clearly has been out of favour and seemingly not well liked by the playing group and coaches. And there's no denying that his numbers stack up well in 2011. As a third banana behind Dawes and Clark, Pedersen would be a valuable player and a difficult match-up for the opposition. And Neeld seems keen to keep developing Howe's midfield ability.

I'm only 5 pages into the thread I'm about to post, but it certainly alleviates doubts about his playing ability. I've always liked what I've seen of Pedersen, but it's nice to get the view of the supporters in question.

As I said, the bloke i know cant believe we are going to get him for potentially such a miniscule pick. He was rated very highly in his earlier days. The quote this bloke used was that Ped would work out better for us than Dawes. Time will tell but im happy.

Rumour is that Farren Ray has officially asked for a trade finally.

Thanks for the link BH.

Have no qualms about getting him. Just like to fork out as little as possible providing leeway for whatever else the FD have in their sights.

We effectively had a third round pick already with Dom Barry. For first, second, third round we get 4, Viney, Barry. Then use a couple of the lower picks for upgrading rookies, and keep some place on the list for the pre-season and rookie drafts, where we still have high picks.

Thanks Ben-Hur. Geez they really bag out his attitude on that forum, with comments like "My mail is that the old phrase "there's no I in Team" hasn't quite sunk in for Pedo". Well it might be all hearsay I guess.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
