When push comes to shove, that's the kind of footballer Magner is really. Like Godfrey - tough, works hard, face of an unloved trailer (I think that might've been an H-ism from many years ago), plenty of G&D, but not a top level footballer.

Definite H-ism. Was something like "Just because you've got a head like an unloved trailer, doesn't mean you're hard."

Fitzpatrick looks very raw - but with a lot of talent.

I think he'll get better each year.

I don't think he is up to AFL atm.

Big Jack Fitzpatrick reminds me very much of Big Bob Johnson. What a great snap for goal he is. Think he is very much in the mix for 3rd tall on the forward line for '13.

And the fact that said good, ordinary footballer managed to play 17 games this year tells us pretty much where we are at as a club with the quality of our list right now.

I also think Bate may have done enough to earn another contract. His mark on Clark was special (and Clark flinching was golden).

Oh God no...first Dunn, now Bate.

Without even pointing out that this is one single VFL game, his form this year does not warrant a new contract, and the prospects of him improving if we do give him one are slim, given he's gone nowhere in the last 5 years.

Bate did nothing apart from that mark (which was made easier by Clarke squibbing the contest). No thanks. He isn't a kid learning the caper in the VFL, he is a 100-game AFL player plodding around in the VFL.

The main one has to be Jack Fitzpatrick. Every week I see him he seems to show something new that I haven't seen before. Today, it was his ability in a tight situation to kick the ball around his body.

We've seen the surprising ability to accelerate from a contest before (most notably down at Kardinia Park earlier) but he did it again today beautifully in that third quarter. I actually clapped loudly on my couch when he did that burning opponents off.

Would love to see him get a game next week on the expanses of Subiaco. I, have been wanting to see him in the side for the last 10 weeks but apart from that 1 in 1 out earlier he hasn't been given a chance.

Some coach's philosophy is to play guys before they are ready

and persist with them, believing every game they play early is worth ten in experience (or something similar) whereas it seems Neeld & co are believers in getting good consistency in the VFL and really earning your spot

(unless you 're a Jetta).

Bring on the finals!

Morton & Bennell were given games for the sake of it & IMO it didn't do them any good. They got slack & wouldn't do any 'Heavy work'.

Some players could probably handle getting games early in they're development & still do everything expected of senior experienced players.. I'm sure Kyle Matthews would be that type.

The bigger fellas maybe need some time to adjust & keep them hungry & striving.

I think Fitz's self belief is slowly growing, as is his body filling out.

I'm happy where things are atmo.

Fitzy was terrific and is steadily becomining co-ordinated. Very impressed by Sheahan and Tynan. Gys reads a pack very well and just needs a strong preseason without further injury to blossom next year.

Next year he'll be pushing Martin for a spot in the seniors hopefully.

I was really disappointed with Gys today - tough conditions, but hardly touched it.

I know the stats said 24 but not good.

Phew. Thanks. Having not seen the game, I was hoping that was the case.

We do not need Bate adding his name to the list of has-beens declaring they are prime for a new contract by playing one/two handy games at the end of a contract which has been full of nothing but disappointment and mediocrity.

Check the best players. Do not only do his possessions contradict you but the coaching panel reckon he was pretty good today.

The first thing I look for in a big man is movement. A guy his height and weight, who can move as freely as him (both speed and agility) has a lot of potential. The rest of the package takes time, but he has the raw ingredients. Exciting.

If his contract discussions are on hold and he is playing consecutive weeks in the VFL when we have lots of injuries then his card are well and truly marked.

strange comment! as GOAG said, he was named in the best by the coaches, so they obviously thought he went alright. had 24 touches, so not sure how you get hardly touched it from that??

i thought he was good without dominating. very clever inside, kick still needs a bit of work at times, although the conditions were horrendous today. obviously needs a tank, but he has a lot of upside.

I just want him to really dominate.

Very much,,, & I saw him & Vickery a few years ago in the same U-18 team a couple of times, including at Casey. Both these boys were standouts & I think both will have great careers.

He (Gysberets) looked like he was trying harder today to impose himself more. I don't know if it was just me, or If he was more at it today, but I noticed him more.

Maybe that doesn't say much for his past games & intensity.

Yes, I remember that and quite liked it at the time.

But there's something wrong when you and DA can remember that sort of ancient stuff.

Fitzpatrick was BLOODY IMPRESSIVE today and has impressed me every time I have seen him over the past three years of VFL footy (in comparison to his expected output level at the time). Next year I would be expecting regular AFL level footy. His body is a poofteenth away from being big enough. His footy is a poofteenth away from being AFL ready. I'd be aiming for round 1 next year if I was him and I'm looking forward to a solid career supporting Clark (maybe even overtaking him) as a key forward for the Dees. We could easily go from rags to riches if those two fire up forward over the next couple of years.

In this age of forwards becoming backup ruckmen, Fitzy, Clarke and Jamar/Martin/Watts/?Gawn suddenly look adequate to impressive as a ruck/forward division (I do not count Jamar as a forward as he is not a forward's a...hole, nor Watts as a ruckman or 'key' forward... just talking abut that area of tall forwards and rucks possibly being covered.

And please please please please can we please get rid of Spencer. Not worth persisiting with. Will never make it. Has one attribute... height.

Don't agree, I'd keep all our rucks for a further 12 months, & than I'd make a call on 1 or 2 of them..

I'd like to wait to see how Gawn comes back from his knee, & how Martin & Spencer go with a further 12 months footy in a winning minded club.

Confidence & Winning, could make some scale the heights & may show others up.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
