Sellar=can't kick , can't run, can't mark.

Can defend though, and he's required for depth and matchup options, for now.

I doubt that Jurrah will be back, regardless of the outcome of his trial.

Will be at Casey next week and would be in line for senior selection by the end of the season given an injury free run from here on.

I hear ya mate! Not saying he's a gun, just saying that there will always be those guys that spend most of the year in the VFL but have attributes (in Sellar's case, size) that lend themselves to being depth players who are needed for injury insurance, matchups, and on the rare occasion produce enough form to get a game.

Plus, he wouldn't be taking up a lot of the salary cap...

We can't have a full list of stars, it's just not possible with the cap, but I think he'll get another year at least purely based on being one of these depth players.

The players I think we should delist or trade are:

Petterd

Bail

Spencer

J. Macdonald

Bate

Dunn

I would like to see Morton, Jetta, Green, Davey, Moloney and Sylvia get another year, and keep Bennell on the list. I'm sure many would disagree with this.

If we can get something for any of the players on the de-list list great but best we could hope for is to upgrade our 3rd round pick.

The unknowns for me are if Green and/or Davey can go on to the veterans list, does this create another spot on the list? And if Bennell is on the long term injury list, do we have to include him next season on our senior list?

Most of it seems reasonable.

I like Bate. I think he gives it a good crack every time unlike Dunn and a few of the others.

Petterd could be a great player but where are the efforts?

Sylvia is showing that with some hard work, and cutting the bull [censored], he can do good things.

My only big issue with the cutting fat list is big pencil.

Jakey has had some serious injury issues and hasn't really been able to have a crack. He is a seriously big unit, and is developing a mature body now.

Give him another year, as we saw last week, Martin cannot run the show himself when Russian is down.

And the bean stalk is... well... still a bean stalk.(will be great in time).

One more year for the pencil to show us what he has got to offer.

BTW. I know this is a different thread entirely, but seeing as you mentioned Cloke, as much as i would like to see him in red n blue, not for seven mil which is too much for a player of his skills. He is a good player, but not a 7 mil 7 year deal player.

Cook is out of contract will he get a new one?

I don't think the club knows. They will be looking at what is around in FA and the Delisted FA and seeing what is there.

I would think there's more chance of him getting a contract if he doesn't play a game this year than if he does... as weird as that sounds!

If he gets a game they may be thinking: "We'll see what he's got in these couple of games and make a decision"

If he doesn't get a game they may be thinking: "He's a long term project and we'll continue to develop him for another year or two"

Honestly, I have no idea what to do with a problem called Cook at this stage.

They won't get rid of Bartram, Bail, or Jetta. I'm not a Bail fan due to his turnovers, but they like his pace and he'll have a crack.

Jetta made some mistakes in his first game back from a long lay off due to injury, but he had a great game for Casey the week before and even against Port he showed that he's nimble, has a knack of getting the footy and his pace is actually pretty decent; and certainly better than some have given him fredit for. Supporters [censored] and moan about every skill error, but coaches don't. They tend to look at what a player brings to the table and what they can do, rather than spending their life worrying about the odd errant kick, or poor decision. Jetta has talent to work with.

Does the above assessment of Jetta's return confirm you are more a supporter than a coach?

Cook is out of contract will he get a new one?

I would be offering Cook a 2 year extension on minimum wages. Some will be thanking Christ that I'm not Tim Harrington! My reasoning;

* Hasn't played a game yet (some will see that as a massive negative, I see it as a potential positive)

* Is growing in to his body

* Has shown at Casey (at times) that he is a more than capable forward, kicking 7 goals in 2 weeks (I think)

* If he can play a dozen games in 2013, kick some goals, show something, then give him 2014 to step up again

If we delist him, what are we going to replace him with? Another kid from the draft? If we landed Cloke (not that I'm "for" it), then Lucas will be in strife, but at this point of our "rebuild", I can't see too much damage investing 2 more years in to Cook.

At the end of the day we have so much "dead wood" to disgard, I think Cook and Gysberts will be safe. They have potential- and whilst potential is seen as some as a dirty word, we owe it to ourselves to give them a shot at actually making it. Thus far they haven't had that shot through injuries and under-developed bodies.

Minimum contracts for both. Delistings are easy enough to work out without having to trawl through unproven kids. I still have high hopes for these two.

I don't think there will be the mass delistings most are expecting we will add 6-7 players to our senior list, Nicho will be elevated, Magner, Evans, Williams to be left on Rookie list.

Green will retire, two players will be elevated to Veteran status- leaving 2 spots

Bate, Petterd or Dunn two of these three will be gone

Spencer Gone

Fitzpatrick Gone but offered a spot on Rookie list

Plus I get a feeling Moloney is leaving

Thats 7 spots, Nicho comes up, leaving 6 spots, 5 for the draft 1 for pre-season draft and a couple of Rookie picks.

Other delistings will depend on how we trade.

People who think there's ANY chance we'll delist Gysberts don't know enough to post here... (and that's saying something)

So dodgy knees Gawn will be our one backup ruck option for Jamar/Martin....??! Bit silly.

Id rather Magner in the ruck then Fitz

Not saying either Fitzy or Spencer are great, but you don't cut 2 ruckmen and leave a guy who's had 2 knee recos as you're only backup option...

Yes. Young 196cm all Australian CHF, who has not fully developed yet.

We will have Jamar/Martin/Sellar/Gawn/Clark and Fitzpatrick on the rookie list. I think we have enough coverage in the Ruck department.

As for this stuff, I have a few inklings but we have apparently told all but Blease, Howe, and Jones (maybe a couple others) that we won't be talking contracts until October when we have a better idea of FA acquisitions, trades, and possible delistings from other clubs.

I think this stance makes sense. However, I would hope Moloney, Rivers & Green are afforded more respect as stalwarts of the club I'd hate to needlessly lose more veterans & have more bloodletting at the club for the sake of chasing rainbows. If we do make the decision to let some older players go, it should be done with tact & respect unlike the Junior scenario.

Stuie!!! We've got to do better Mate.

Not every player on a list has to be a superstar. Darren Glass can't kick that well but he is seen

as one of the best defenders going around. Sellar big, strong and competitive something we need.

There is no way Cook, a 196cm 'project' CHF will be delisted. I am sure the club knew what they were getting when they drafted him, after all he was only about 80kg from memory (maybe less) when he came to the dees, and no one could have expected him to have an impact straight away.

I would be offering Cook a 2 year extension on minimum wages.

I agree with this.

Disagree.

Who knows what will happen with Gawn, can't count on him as an option.

Clark is a FORWARD not a ruck, he has to stay there or we have no one to kick to.

Sellar has been killed in the ruck when he's been put there this year.

Fitzy has diabetes, doesn't mean the end of him, but it won't help.

What happened this year when Jamar was out injured? Once again we had Sylvia rucking... Not good.

TP there are a couple of things that have occured to me.

- The people that picked Cook are mostly all gone from the club. the current FD had no hand in choosing him.

Why would they have a commitment to a "project" play from the past FD? From the little info that I have he just does not look like a "neeld type"

- Why was he only given a 2 year deal? or did he only want 2 years? The vast majority of first round picks would usually be offered 3 years deals.

Why only 2 if he was a " project" player ( I hate that word ) surely the longer the better.

The last first round draft pick who wanted only two years never intended to stay.

Just wondering what other people ( with the exception of a couple ) think

Without being a medico, i would imagine doctors could manage Fitzty's diabetes to allow him to train and play football. Especially now its been diagnosed. FWIW, I think delistings will depend on who the club can recruit/trade into the club and its for this reason all contract negotiations are delayed until Oct. If the club cant recruit/trade a few 23 to 26 yr old moneyball midfield types players then one of Dunn and Bate will stay. My guess Dunn will be spared before Bate. The midfield experiment with Bate has failed abysmally and Dunn is performing better as a Utility.

Anyone who thinks Cook and Gys are in danger are dreaming. They may be traded for another player of worth, but they wont be delisted.

IMO opinion Bennell and Batram are gone. Injuries signed their release.

Sellar is another one who is safe. He has performed admirably in defense. People tend to forget the guy has played 20 or 30 odd games.

Couch was listed as Rookie for his in close clearance abilities for the young ones to learn from. Form dictated his promotion but his athletic abilities are very limited and dont transfer into an AFL player. Couch to go Magner to stay. Another year in the system and better fitness and coaching resources will mean Magner will improve.

IMO Neeld is playing alot of fringe players to see their worth for developing the list beyond this season. I read somewhere that Mission wont be putting too much effort in the mid range to senior players with thier fitness as their long term capabilities do not allow for too much development. It seems to me that Neeld and Mission are hell bent on developing the younger ones in a different manner to Bailey. Get them fit, teach them skills before giving them games.

I just hope Neeld knows what he is doing. The club is dependant on the Neeld/Mission combination. Mission has the runs on the board to warrant some trust, Neeld doesn't

i would have thought a smart, skilful key position player who knows were to run would be exactly the type of player neeld would be looking for. while he hasnt cracked it for a game yet, he has shown some signs in the vfl. i think people here underestimate the effect injuries have on players, particularly young players. players need the continuity of training and playing to build a fitness base, and build confidence. i have very high hopes for lucas, and i think after a big preseason, he'll be looking to start next season in the forward line for melbourne. not too fussed if he doesnt get a game this year, as long as he plays out the season at casey and shows a few signs.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
