Melbourne coach Mark Neeld hanging tough after nightmare start to season

Not altogether that bad.

There are clearly a few paragraphs that should be bolded because they have been said by MR, but have been attributed to Neeld.

Notes that he reads letters sent to the club, and sometimes conveys them to the playing group, which should fill a few here with burgeoning sense of self-satisfaction.

Any thoughts?

Odd that it's an 'exclusive' interview when the big paper has one too.

But good to have him out there laying to rest some of those mistruths of earlier in the year.

It was good to read that players are putting in extra voluntary training sessions as well as players seeking mentors outside the club for personal development. There is another article in the Hun regarding the moneyball strategy to recruiting. It may deserve its own thread.

What I don't understand is that if we are to use the moneyball strategy why would we advertise it for all our competitors to see prior to the Draft?

Unless we are foxing in some way

"IN an exclusive interview with Mark Robinson, Melbourne coach Mark Neeld reveals how he has coped with the nightmare start to the season - and those racism claims."

I'm curious as to what it is that makes an interview "exclusive".

Does it mean that Robbo's the only person with the right to interview the coach ... this week, this month or this year?

And if Michael Gleeson quoted Mark Neeld in the Age today, who's exclusivity is affected?

The interview was exclusive because it "exclusively" featured Robinson questioning Neeld with his own "exclusive" questions and Neeld's own "exclusive" responses. ^_^

I've seen media channels claim "exclusives" when at the same time all their rivals are covering exactly the same story.

The same thing that makes one vacuum cleaner better than the next, the bullsh-t that the salesman spews.

I think this is just a comment from Neeld taking to its extreme by the Hun.

It just means that we will look at state league players from about the 4th round onwards.

And I don't think that is giving anything away considering we traded out of the first round last year and took three 24 year olds, a 20 year old, and only three teenagers in all the drafts last year...

FWIW I think Robinson is the worst person in media, just blabbers on and can never spit his words out. I hate listening to him on AFL360. He drives me! Tries to get passionate and really doesn't have a clue.

Might be a case of getting on the front foot.Maybe by signalling our intentions some players , potential moneyballers ( sts) might start enquiring via their people ( managers etc ).

Undoubtedly some foxing too. Bit of an enigma wrapped in a conundrum for sure though.

What it does say to me, at least, is this man has a plan, he has a vision and he intends to enact it. He also isnt promising anyone at Melbourne anything currently ( ie playing group ) . This is a sounding ot year entwined with a healthy bout of weeding come seasons end.

The 2013 Melbourne playing group will be somewhat very different is seems.

i remain to be convinced that sabremetrics will work for australian rules football.

there are too many vagaries compared to the 1 v 1 nature of a pitcher vs a batter.

Identifying undervalued players that can play a role or fill a need can still apply I would have thought even if the sabremetrics don't directly translate. I'm sure that there are statistics that FD's can use such as disposal efficiency, tackles, avg contested possessions etc that could be used. For all we know there are teams already using similar systems for recruiting.

References in the AGE to early season Indiscretions by Green, our former skipper. First I've heard of it - related to Irish series.

What's that about?

Agree entirely. I have made similar comments in other threads. If he can be a major sports journalist it tells us something about "The Sin". And yes, the way he warbles on. I can no longer bear to watch AFL 360.;

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
