They are not far from it billy.

Buckley is the CEO of the FFA, with the A League being just 1 part of that organisation. No doubt there are some clubs that are struggling in the A League, but it would be arguable that football/soccer in Australia is as strong as it has been for many years. The obvious success(?) of the Socceroos helps with this, but I think you will find that Buckley is a very good operator and boss of a very strong and stable organisation.

Is one of the other parts the World Cup bid? Yeah that went well ...

It failed because we don't lower ourselves to play by FIFA's corrupt rules. The bid itself was fine. We just wouldn't compete with countries like Russia and UAE who were willing hand the brown paper bags around.

S_T We all knew that before the process started, how did they ever think they could win without greasing palms.

There is no other way to describe our bid but poor.

First one out with one vote says it all.

C'mon Old, you're better than that. Lowy pushed for that bid, what was Buckley going to do? He had no option other than going along with it, and the fact that the government put in $46m "tax payers" money was more ignorant of the Australian government than Buckley. Lowy, being the richest bloke in Australia at the time, found that his ego got in the way and in the scheme of things from a world-wide perspective, his money didn't give him the power that he was used to/expected/sold to the Aust government.

(Nb. that part about tax payers $$ is directed at B59, DC and the other Old!).

Funny thing is-Lowy has heaps of money to keep the Palestinians in fear and poverty but none to put into Australian Soccer from his own pocket .

That World Cup bid was NEVER going to win .

A waste of our money made deliberately .

I dont blame the Fat Miners of the East coast from wrecking Soccer .

Love the Jewish race but i despise Zionist billionaire manipulators.

Billy I may be dumb ( probably am )

But I have no idea what you mean.

Can you enlighten me please?

Because if countries like Australia and England that refuse to play that way don't continue to bid and expose the problem it will continue.

As with the Olympics, it also takes a few bidding processes to be seen as legitimate candidate. Melbourne's failed bid for the 1996 Olympics made it a lot easier for Sydney to win it in 2000.

The contribution of the government's money can be questioned, but it doesn't stand alone there.

so you don't deny it was a waste of tax payers money?

i didn't know the mfc spent tax payer dollars chasing Judd. remind me how much we wasted on that exercise.

In hindsight, absolutely it was. At the time, Lowy and the Federal Government were riding the crest of the world cup wave, thought it would be a great idea to make a bid, and they lost. Lowy had it in his head that he/we would win, sold it to the Fed Govt, they bought it. How this argument has anything to do with Ben Buckly has got me stuffed.

In regards to the Judd comparison, I guess the MFC spent our money (members money) chasing something that was never going to happen due to a corrupt competitor. How many hours and personnel did the club invest in to the Judd chase? I'd imagine there would've been a few dollars spent on it. To the same degree as the world cup bid? Of course not, our operating costs as a Club weren't even as much as what the govt put in for the WC bid. The point was that the Club spent our money on a lost cause.

Any way, at this stage, I think Schwab should stay.

Federal Gov had no idea. They just thought they could buy some votes from the soccer demographic for the next election. Lowy conned them on his "influence" - LOL

End result - Gross embarrassment - 1 vote

I knew what your point was but it was a pretty poor comparison. like comparing a mountain to a mole-hill

Truth is DC, noone other than Lowy and Arbib (and a couple of insiders no doubt) know the reason why the govt spent that much on it. When the richest bloke in the country goes to the govt and tells them this is what he is doing and this is what he wants them to do, they generally do it. No government wants to pi$$ off the wealthiest bloke, that's fact.

To say that it was a vote grabbing exercise, I don't agree with, but that's your view and I respect that. I think it was more a case of Lowy promising something that he thought he had total control over, yet he was so, so wrong, and the govt ended up with egg on their face.

I'm amazed at how this discussion has gone from someone looking at Arocca as a potential replacement to schwab, to me saying there were rumours about Ben Buckley being linked to the job, to then Buckley getting the blame for the failed FFA world cup bid and the state of the A League, to then his name being associated with wasting tax payers money in something that the realist would see that he had absolutely no control/say in. Wowee...

hmmmm your view of government is as cynical as mine only in a different direction. maybe it was a combination of both

re Buckley: no argument from me, I never mentioned him, just hopped onto the backend of the argument on the World Cup farce bid

What about David Gallop?

Not as silly as some might think it sounds. He did a hell of a lot in improving the state of NRL during some very difficult times when clubs were imploding (Canterbury Bulldogs, Easts, Storm etc) and when other codes were threatening (well, maybe too strong a word) to overrun them due to NRLs crumbling image.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
