I know, he's a bloody tortoise and we're hurting for pace. But he was 2nd to Magner in the VFL last year and is still clearly playing well despite simply not being wanted by the Blues. Clearly on the outer at Carlton. Will have a year left on the deal, but we have so much cap space it wouldn't matter.

Offer them our bottom pick in the draft and bring him back? It'd be a role model for the young mids to look up to.

Like the romantisism (is that a word) of the notion but is just too slow. We need outsiders with pace pace pace!

Don't you remember what he was like in his last 6 months?? Couldn't kick the ball inside the boundary line and had to come out before the start of the game to catch someone!!!

Why not Bruce too? Not getting a game. Hawthorn are failing to recognize his talents.

No. Brock can't get a game for Carlton. NEWSFLASH we are nowhere near Carlton. NOWHERE!

If Brock were on our list he'd still be one of our most important players.

Look at the possession count of matches so far. We are getting smashed. He can and will get the ball with ease. Get him back NOW

Let's just continue to produce superstars like the ones we have produced in the last 40 years... OH wait.

It's funny how you all hold such negative views on a player who:

A. Was one of our best before leaving

B. Would still be one of our best

C. Possesses onfield leadership we lack

D. Beat Tom Couch and James Magner in the VFL B&F despite playing less games

So what he can't get a game at Carlton. Name somebody in our current midfield who would!

Its funny, as I had a thought along similar lines. Looking at the number of players on other teams lists that have come from us,

I wondered to myself how many of them would be getting a game right now (obviously ignoring the fact we got picks/players for them):

Scott Thompson (yes)

Brock McLean (yes)

Darren Jolly (yes)

Simon Buckley (maybe)

James McDonald (yes)

Tom Scully (yes)

Kyle Cheney (maybe)

Cameron Bruce (yes)

Brad MIller (yes)

Addam Maric (no)

Obviously only hypothetical, and it wouldnt even automatically make us a better side (as we wouldnt have gotten players/picks for the deals

we made to get rid of these players).

Feel free to disagree, but right now I wish we still had a swathe of experienced players...

Go after Miller as well he had a dip on the weekend and towelled up Rivers.

Maybe I was watching a different game to you. Rivers played on and restricted Vickery to a handful of posessions did he not? Tom McDonald

to my eye was playing on Miller.

Without Vickery and Reiwoldt to play off Miller would not be a contributor. He has not improved. He is working in a different structure. Was only any good with us when he had a big teammate to take the main heat.

Yes hypothetical, but surely the question is who would you want lining up for us - I would say Scott Thompson is a gun and a given, Brock - no, Jolly might be handy but is struggling, Buckley maybe, Junior is a hard one - we need the leadership, but disposal is still a) lollypop and B) ordinary; Tom Scully - Yes but most would choke on their Weeties, Kyle Cheney could teach us a few things about disposal but it would be without speed (would have him ahead of Bartram, Bennell etc. but forget the rest

I thought I saw the same thing. Tom didn't have a great day, unfair to put that one on Riv.

You sound like someone who would back over their road kill!

Time to move on frenchie!

A. No he wasnt. Finished 10th in the B&F while playing 19 games. Was crud.

B. No he would be fighting with Magner. Has not been one of our best for six years

C Unfortunately doing wheelies, speed fines and being publicly drunk does not cut it

D. Paul Johnson won the Liston playing less games. And i dont want him.

Rather have Simon Godfrey. And I dont want him either.

Agree. And given Richmond had 65 inside 50s and monstered us in the clearances, Miller with 2 gimmes out of 3 goals hardly impressed why would should have kept him.

Neeld wants to rebuild and Brock would not be in his plans

To do so would be going backwards

I'm not suggesting it as a long-term measure. It'd be a stopgap at best. We're hurting bad for onfield leadership, we've identified it clearly. But something similar - experienced player on the outskirts, although flawed - is almost certainly what we should be looking at to help the blokes onfield. I don't know if there is anyone around the league in a similar position to Brock - picked up a lot of games early in their career, and wanting one last crack - but if there are, to bring the blokes on and offer them some protection would be amazing.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
