Part of the problem is "lexicographical inflation", that is, the misuse of other words such as "star". The Herald Sun will call a player who's played five games a "star", which means other words are needed ("superstar", "champion" and "elite") to describe players who are better than a five game player.

Inflation has also struck other words and phrases like the dreaded "110%" instead of "100%" and "average" and "ordinary" meaning "below average" and "worse than ordinary" respectively.

I don't know how to describe "elite" other than to point out that there is a difference between an elite player (such as G Ablett) and a player with one specific elite skill (such as , perhaps, Aaron Davey's left foot kicking).

I think that's well summed up.

I agree Davey has an "elite" kick (I would say top 10 in the AFL), but he is not an "elite" player in the competition.

For an elite midfielder 'elite' would be: A player that possesses a high to extremely high standard of several attributes.

That's the common theme I see with all of the top mids.

Obviously positionally, the word 'elite' has different characteristics.

The term 'elite' is a rather unfortunate term to use when referring to individuals

Historically the term referred to a 'social group' within society and is better used as a group expression where an ('elite') individual is just 'part of' an 'elite' group

The AFL is the elite level of aussie rules in the country, hence all the players are part of that elite group. They are 'elite footballers' because they are part of the 'elite' competition.

It seems to me most posters are really arguing the case for the 'elite of the elite'

I'd much rather try to define what a 'star' is

Sportsmen and women wish to be in it, politicians explain how they are opposed to it, and the rest of us try to define it.

It is the way of things...

Pendlebury on Saturday night - ran hard at a ball that fell short of him - he picked it up effortlessly on the half volley, spun on a penny and rammed a pass down Daisey's throat who kicked the goal - now THAT was elite.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
