Likely to be re-visited after NAB 4 when we know the exact stance with injuries and game time. But here is my guesstimate at what it will be round 1 based on current injury/fitness/suspension lists:

FB: Bartram Frawley Sellar

HB: Grimes Rivers Garland

C: Howe Moloney Trengove

HF: Green Watts Petterd

FF: Davey Clarke Blease

R: Jamar Jones Magner

Int: Bate Martin Bail

Sub: Bennell

Emerg: Gysberts Dunn Nicholson

With the squad for the last round of NAB released, it has given us a slightly better indication of round 1:

FB: Garland - Frawley - Bartram

HB: Rivers - Sellar - Grimes

C: Jones - Magner - Trengove

HF: Howe - Green - Petterd

FF: Davey - Clark - Watts

R: Jamar - Moloney - Bail

I: Blease - Martin - McKenzie

S: Tynan

E: Tapscott - Bate - Dunn - Bennell - Gysberts

With the squad chosen I predict this to be the side.

Why are so many people picking Sellar?

The guy was dumped by Adelaide

Has play a couple of average games

And suddenly he is everyone's CHB.

There aren't too many options there Old, who would you prefer?

I would prefer that the defenders are able to work to their talent / niche without being burdened with gorilla minding - where possible.

He was also taken as a top 10 draft pick then played in every bloody position on the ground by the Crows. Wasted. Lots of players have gotten a change of scenery and become much better. Tarrant at freo?

I'm more confused about Bate. I saw nothing i liked from him in the midfield. Interested to hear how Tynan goes again this weekend, wouldn't mind seeing him thrown in the deep end from round 1. Gives him confidence and would be a bit of a kick up the ass to some of the older guys.

If Watts is fit he will play round one, a few of the guys like Bate, Dunn, Blease, Davey, Bennell and Couch are pushing for a place this Friday, a fit Magna has booked his. Tynan is in for experience but would be very supprised if he made the round one team. I also think Sellar and Rivers may be playing off for a place as Brisbane with no Brown are not going to stretch our defense, if Brown was playing there may be an argument for both.

I notice that many put Jurrah in - the header of the thread is best 22 round 1.

Clearly no way Liam will be ready for that.

Same goes for Morton - is he in full training?

I would love to use Couch as a crumber in the forward line. To me, this spot would be Sylvia's but what can you do? Otherwise it would be Jetta's or Jurrah's if fit. I don't see anyone else that could be used there without losing out by taking them from their current position in the 22.

I will save my thoughts on Watts for another thread.

Bartram is one player who splits the supporter base down the middle. I'm one who thinks his skills are so far below the required level its a joke. Despite what some of his advocates think he rarely takes the best opposition small. We have to find a replacement real soon otherwise he's one of our c players of which we can have too many. One hundred games and he still hasn't developed the skill set required, it won't happen now. He should be at the top of his game.

Where Sellar is after round 10 will be interesting

I was hopeful for Bate. Got some great skills but I didn't see great improvement in the mid-field. Ok in the scrappy Bris/suns game. But very modest last week. I had given up on dunn but I felt he was probably more value than Bate last week.

Tynan sounds romantic but hardly any point at this stage. Personally I'd go with Davis before Tynan, despite what Neeld did to him last week.

People seem to think the new guys are all great . Rivers , Tappy and Strauss will be pushing up for spots in the back line as well .

It will be interesting how many games Martin gets. With Clarke up forward, they may make him rake for 5-10 minutes a qtr to provide Jamar with respite...

Surely Bartram will not get many games this year. His disposal is terrible. The pick of the smalls to play back would be Blease, Grimes, Tapscott, Bennel or Strauss. I dont think Jetta has the requisite skills to play down back. I think he may get a go as a forward. Talls

There are quite a few Mids to choose from...Jones, Bail, Moloney, Davey, Nicholson, Trengove, McKenzie, Strauss(?), Gysberts (hoping for a big season!), Morton and Magner. I believe they will elevate Magner and Nicholson to replace the two injured ruckman on the list.

Rucks: Jamar, Clarke, Martin.

The forward line will be interesting. Jurrah will be a big loss to start the season. He can kick a few and play terribly. I think Clark, Howe are automatic starters with Petterd, Green, Watts, Davey, Jetta, Lawrence and Sylvia depending on rotations and form.

Neeld has done some experimenting over the Nab cup, lets hope he can get a good mix come round one!!

Cant wait!

If Sellar can hold his own at CHB then that would/could allow Rivers to free up a bit and come into contests as a spoiler (he is the best punch we have in all of the backs) as he can play on a 'less dangerous' forward. He would go nuts as a loose defender. (IMO)

Just to add onto the SellarDoor debate, I was at the Qld triple header and very much liked what I saw from him. The guy can play in the backline. Very much had the Warnocks about him except didn't scare the living [censored] out of me when he tried to kick the footy. He'll be great against a gorilla - see Cloke, Brown, Roughead - and even better against the more generic tall forwards (Vickery, Lynch). It also releases Frawley off those guys to take the rebounding HB role, where he is far, far more deadly.

If we don't try and muck with him as well as (occasionally) have him pinch-hit as a third option down back in the ruck (behind Rush and Martin) then I think he'll do well.

I am not having a go at you biffen

But a lot people on here keep saying " they are only a Nab cup / practise games they don't mean much"

So lets wait till the real action starts

Just please no more Bate in the midfield. His decision-making verges on embarassing, if you can call hurriedly booting it forward without looking up a decision. Can't understand everyone singing his praises in the new role considering how often he turns it over.

I can only assume people are leaving out Tappy because of the lack of pre-season games. If fit he's one of the first I'd pick. Tough, reliable kick, and leaves nothing out on the paddock. How many can have that said about them?

Plus Bartram is in the leadership group, for some reason, hence he will get plenty of games no matter how good his disposal.

Two key players that need to stand up this year if we're to have any chance of moving up the ladder are Morton and Gysberts. Those are the two I will be watching most closely, and I'd like to see both playing in Rd 1 but I doubt it will happen.

Previously I was pencilling this in as a win, but now I just want to see us go out there and stick it up them.

I have a feeling we might see Bartram used more up ground this year as a mid-field defensive stopper/tagger, just will depend on a few injuries down back.

Absolutely no way, given their lack of preseason, or at least preseason appearances.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
