Rookie Draft

So we are going to add these 2 to the list of Watts, Clark, Lucas Cook (a first round draft pick), Jack Fitzpatrick, plus possibly Davis, Tom Mac and Sellar. As Neeld continues to say, we will see a different team in 2012, which is great, but it's 2013+ that I'm wanting to see a premiership team, so there will be pressure on some of these guys to step up/develop quicker.

Well the more the merrier imo, with the number we have and the latest additions well one is 18 but the other is about 20 yeah? so body may be slightly more ready with a step up to VFL in 2011 and hopefully AFL beyond, as you say with now Clark, Watts, Cook, Sheehan, Sellar, Fitz and Williams surely we can find 3 talls for our best 22?

This may throw Watts around a bit imo, not because he wont be best 22 or wont be better than any of the others mentioned but because he can play high up the ground, play like a mid through the middle or on a wing, HFF ect, his delivery to 2-3 of the other guys mentioned could be incredible, also adds flexibility. someone has to step up for this to happen still though, no need to get too excited, only a ltttle haha

Anyway what i think is teh thing now is who can take the veterans list promotion off the rookie list? i think it will need to be a midfielder unless Williams or Sheehan are AMAZING..... which mid? NIcholson is in Poll atm imo but can Couch, Evans or Magners steal it off him? whoever gets the promotion is highly likely to be starting 23 round 1

I think one rookie can be available to the seniors R1 because we've only got 1 vet and another rookie can be elevated mid-year. Others could be elevated for long-term injuries (we don't want any of them thanks) - maybe Jake Spencer will qualify but I think it has to be 8 rounds and he'll be hoping to be back before then, James Strauss looks a certainty to be back before then. Not sure about all this so please advise if I've got it wrong.

So it looks like Casey is going to get some nice benefit from some plug and play rookies.

Yeah that is my understanding aswell,

Hopefully Casey appreciate the players who will be available to them, as they lost quite a few didnt they already? with Mohr going to GWS ect? not a bad midfield on paper for VFL Nicho, Evans, Couch, Magners.....plus MFC surplus and who ever they recruit.....

Also as much as you dont want to talk about it LTI's do happen and create opportunities Evans and Nicho last year for example

Had a cursory look on the afl website and i couldn't see Shane Nelson's name come up...did i miss something or did 17 clubs miss out on a quality mid fielder?

I was surprised as well, I reckon he missed out because of size, he's not tall and only about 77 kgs.

They thought he'd go top 20 or 30 in the National Draft over there and here it is he isn't even rookied. Reminds me a bit of Evans.

On the surface we seem to have done well but as usual only time will tell

Counting down to the first Game roll on the Footy season this year hopefully we will have a better season than last

I got a very uneasy feeling from above DS

You don't think it could be worse do you?

So it looks like Casey is going to get some nice benefit from some plug and play rookies.

Casey only gets to play those MFC players who aren't selected in the AFL team and since there will be the same number of players on Melbourne's list next year the net benefit in terms of players available to Casey = zero.

What Casey needs now is to top up on its own list because the strength of every VFL club is dependent on its own player depth. With two key players already missing in Fev & Mohr the Scorpions need to recruit players for 2012 if they want to improve on the past two or three seasons.

True, But, Melbournes depth is getting deeper, & class better. Year on year.

When most of our list in on 50 qames Or More,,, then Casey will benefit as well. At the moment we have so many skinny and immature players.

The 4 rookies are unlikely to be eligible to play for Melbourne. I think Casey will immediately benefit from Couch, Magner and Williams - they're replacing McNamara, Johnstone and Newton. Casey would have had less immediate benefit if we'd rookied 4 x 18 year olds.

I don't want to jump the gun but things don't sound too good with big Maxy. If he looks like going on the LTI list prior to the start of the season then it really hots up between our rookies for the promotion.

Assuming Nicholson gets the full yr nomination (in lieu of a veteran) then you'd think it would be between Evans, Couch and Magner for the LTI promotion but it will be interesting. I can't see our ruck stocks being tested tbh but if Clark hypothetically was earmarked for more ruckwork then perhaps Williams could be in the mix. Not sure where Lawrence is at and doubt Sheahan would be ready to play the role Neeld would want.

If training wasn't intense enough already it could go up a notch for the rookies.

Poor Max.

Lucky weve got back up in the ruck stocks till he gets his knee fixed.

Hope he can come back in during the year.

Jamar, Stef, Clark will share the duties, along with Sellar perhaps.

Had a chat to James Magner today, nice guy on cloud 9 about being drafted.

Man is he well built would have no problems playing senior footy with his build - not sure on his skills or fitness though.

Just on big Maxy from what I saw during the day today he is without a doubt one of the most popular characters at the club hope its not too bad!

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
