An exciting find for the club, the high marking Howe showed many dimensions to his game.

He proved to be not only good around goal, but also played some good football when played further afield with his excellent foot skills and decision making.

Nobody had heard of him when we took him with our mid 30s pick. Inspired pick it would seem, and from what I remember Prendergast took him that early because he feared he'd be gone by the next pick (Collingwood?)

Needs to find some consistency as his game's not 100% there yet, but he's a really exciting prospect that had a fantastic first year.

Really caught the eye with the effort and ability he showed in the QB clash. I think it's always the mark of a good young player when they can stand up in matches when you're getting thrashed.

Looks like he believes he belongs at the level and, to my mind, has the best all-round natural game out of all of the mid-sized forwards we have (including Petterd and Jurrah).

He hopefully will be able to combine with Liam to be the unpredictable 'spark' players, feeding off and supplementing the stronger Clark, and Watts.

He seems to have learned to read the play pretty well, and should only get better with improved fitness and hardness, as well as having more solid players around him.

I am really looking forward to his second season.

He's a footy player.

He's got a footy brain and looked to have an appetite for the defensive stuff that others, er, don't...

The beauty of Clark is that now Howe should rarely find himself out of a more comfortable role on the flank than the main target across HF.

One thing I will say from experience: it may take some time to adapt to a role where you are dictated to move by another, and he is going to have to adapt to the presence of Clark.

I have little doubt he can be a HFF for a long time though.

Howie is looking very much like an inspired pick after an excellent first season. He seems to be a very 'complete' footballer - great hands and a good kick, but just as importantly, he is 'football savvy', does the one percenters / team things very well and he seems very calm / level-headed the way he goes about it. I'd expect him it improve in 2012 with a second pre-season under his belt, more experience at the top level and a decent forward structure around him. If he can add consistency to his game, he has the ability imo, to be a high-level player and (dare I say it?) maybe even a match-winner on his day. Good stuff Howie!

Got a sticky set of fingers and the comparisons to Russell Robertson have well and truly been justified. However, and with no disrespect to Robbo, Howe seems to have a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Could often end up being that player who isn't shown enough respect by the opposition (with Watts, Clark, Jurrah running around) and subsequently will play even better with less attention on him. Could be competing with Petterd for a spot although with Greeny retiring not far into the the future more room will open up for him. Also depends on where Watts and Clark are played. Still... very excited and looks to be a great pickup by BP.

Everyone loves a speccy too :) more excitement = more fans through the gate.

Robbo kicked a lot of goals. He had a lot of deficiencies and sadly many of us mostly remember him for his last few seasons of him laying prone, punching the ground as his opponent ran up the ground with the ball, but when he was in his prime he was a huge threat to the goals. Howe has a higher work ethic than Robbo so I'd expect the ground-punch is not in his repertoire, but he'll need to hit the goals more for the comparison to hold.

Early days yet, obviously.

He is certainly more than the one dimentional player we thought we were getting. Moves well and makes good decisions. Thrilled to have him in the side.

18 goals from 13 games is a great return for a first year player (and I think he only played one quarter as a sub in a couple of those games too). Very impressive marking too..

^This. And another year in the AFL system should see further improvement.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
