If it is based on preformance of 2011 rather than potential, no Melbourne player should be there

I love Beamer but in what hemisphere did he have a better year than Marc Murphy

Posted

He really must have a soft spot for us after all !! B)

I don't have any issue with that list. Think it's pretty fair. I would say Beamer would be in the top 50/60, but not by much, and he's definitely the only Dees player to be there. Would be interesting to see what order Sheahan would actually have it in.

The only way Luke Ball gets near the top of any Top 50 is if it's alphabetical. Gary Ablett deserves his number one spot, and not just because of his surname.

Fair enough that we get squat this year, but the pre-season Top 50 will be interesting. Frawley would have to rate highly amongst defenders.

Beamer slotted in at number 49. Probably fair given his year.

Agree, I think this is fair. Mind you there are some interesting players in the top 60. Andrew Embley, Dustin Martin, Andrew Walker, Dyson Heppell, and Chris Yarran are questionable in my opinion.

Beamer is fair but you challenge those others!! Hmmm interesting.

Yeh look maybe biased however as Mike states in his summary, Beamer was fifth for clearances, top 15 in contested possessions.

I think you'll find the clearances stat also included finals. I think he was actually 2nd or 3rd. I think he is definately in the best 50 players in comp. If he had more support would be much higher. Still find it strange that our own supporters underrate this guy.

If Mike was to check behind the quantum of stats, you will see the Beamer racked up the bulk of those stats against GC, Adelaide, Brisbane and other weak sides. His performances required Jamar fit. A harsh term but Beamer was a flat track bully IMO who cashed in on the easy games. He went perennially missing when the pressure was on and continually got shown up when MFC came up against the stronger midfields.

Can you name me a player that would not be better with more support around him? Hmmm. It such a flaccid claim to support a player.

I think many of his own supporters know him better than the media experts. If he starts continually performing against top 6 sides he will get a reassessment.

He is lucky appointment to the Top 50 imo.

Who cares about Mike Sheehan's Top 50. A very self indulgent subjective piece.

I would rather know who the coaches rated as their Top 50.

Frawley is the only other Melbourne player who should be considered.

I know its only Sheehan's opinion, but it's funny to see Scott Thompson and James Moloney so close together on that list. It was a great shame to lose Thompson, but Moloney was as good a replacement as we could have hoped for.

I thought we may have even ended up with the better player after Moloney's string of BOG's, but Thompson went on to have the better season.

Beamer deserves his spot.

Other dees to feature in the not too distant future:

Trengove

Frawley

Watts

Jurrah

Blease (smokey)

James Frawley is clearly top 50 on 2011 performance and if a draft was held today for all footballers he would be top 15.

i would agree Fan. I'd rather have Chippa than Beamer.

how could he possibly have bock ahead of scott thompson???

Bock had a very good year at GC in an underwhelming side.

James' brother Brent would be livid at that!!! ;)

Scott Thompson over the journey from 2005 to 2011 has been far far superior to Beamer. Thompson was a harsh loss at the time and we have never properly covered that.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
