The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

Recommended Posts

Ron no one is suggesting we delist Brad at all. Merely that he should be on 1 year contracts from now on. So back off with the emotional rant. 2011 was a year Brad needed to step up, he didn't so that must be taken into account.

Actually, I think with some of the comments such as "if he doesn't want 1 year, he can have none." you will find that some ARE implying he be delisted if he is not willing to accept one year.

I understand the sentiment but please don't equate Green to Kerr, Embley, Cox, or Glass. The are on another level.

We should keep him, he has been a good contributer to the club.

However, he shouldn't decide with the FD whether he keeps the captaincy; Maxwell has to win his captaincy every year and the FD should, in consultation with a blind vote from the players, decide who is going to lead us in 2012.

Green is every bit as good or if not better than Embley. Embley pplayed as a front running outsider this season after spending 3 years as a hack in the midfield. If you look back over the last 10 years Green is streets ahead of him and I would also say Greens 2010 is far better than Embleys 2011. Whilst comparing him to Cox, Glass 7 Cox is like comparing apples and pears

Brock Mclean-Sweet FA

Miller-got a few kicks

McDonald-Old Xavs

Bruce-Hawks fill in.

We have not made one error in delisting yet so relax on the loyalty bit and concentrate on turning this team into a machine devoid of sentiment and weakness .If he goes , he goes .

Travis Johnstone- got a few easy kicks at a then weak team, another very good decision

It does make you wonder though. The club must have thought hed have a few years left in him otherwise why appoint someone capt for just a year ?

Yes, the captaincy hasnt been a roaring success and his form lacks a certain "something" but the club must have and presumedly still has the idea hell be around a couple more years. It just the conditions under which that happens I would have thought the point.

Yes, we all have our different opinions.

My point is that the "we should hang on to our older stars because of what WCE have managed to do" argument falls flat due to the fact that we don't have Cox, Kerr, or Glass calibre senior players.

We are in a false economy, and to equate Green to those champions is deluding ourselves.

Love the guy and I hope we work something out but we have to come to grips with reality.

MMM tonight had him looking at his options. They say if the captaincy is taken off him he'll walk. No sources mentioned of course, so I think it's more speculation than fact, but we'll see.

is that MMM or some caller ??

Interesting Scenario....I go back to the Adelaide game....1. Not Passing to Matty Bate in the goal Square. 2. Punching the Emblem on his jumper at the MCC Members when we weree like 80 points up..

Brad Green Behaved like a Spoilt Brat that day...and basically did sweet F A for the remainder of the season sadly.

I don't think Brad is the man to LEAD this team forward at all.

I want him as a team player & i am happy if he is in the Leadership Group...But he is not a Captain...& this Behavior if true confirms it.

Captaincy or else hey Brad....."The Club is bigger than the Man." is all i shall say.

Well as i said above...If Brad does not like the 1 year options (& let's make this clear...we could renew his contract 5-6 times...It's up to Brad) Then i consider him a spoilt brat & not a team player.

Sorry but 2011 was that bad....

if this is the case, show him the door and make sure the door does not hit him on the way out.

It must be so obvious to him that the captaincy had a massive negative effect on his form, just give it up Brad and play footy to the standard we know you can

Let's have that pinch of salt here...

Firstly, he has to go through a process to 'get' the captaincy back so that is not a decision that can be made before his contract runs out. Your captain should be decided in Jan/Feb of a season.

And while I realise that captain changes are rare other than for retirements, the process still has to be adhered to.

I very much doubt Brad would tie his contract to that.

I call BS.

Yes, by his standards he had a bad year, but to repeat for the umpteenth time, he was 11th in the Bluey... says a lot for the rest of the team doesn't it. And those same people who judged him in the awards, will be negotiating the terms of his contract no doubt.

Sorry, but I really have to take issue with the "soft at the contest" comment. Yes he had a bad year, but Green has NEVER been soft! I know that statistics can be misleading, but if we look at this year, he actually increased the number of tackles from 58 to 61 while playing one less game this year... sure maybe they weren't as effective as in previous years, but he was definitely NOT shirking the contest. Additionally, his disposals and marks were pretty much similar to 2010 and the only area we could probably say he obviously fell down in, was his kicking in front of goal... but he still managed 37 compared to 55 last year - not a bad return by any means.

One of the problems Green had this year was that he was being instructed to play forward and himself lamented the fact that he was being restricted in his access to the ball as a result. If the ball is not being delivered to the forwards, then of course, being played forward, he is going to look bad and his effectiveness as a leader is limited.

C'mon 'hardtac', he didn't want to go anywhere near it, especially the first 3/4Qtrs of the season. He was a disgrace.

And it seems many thought alike as he was taken from the team late, then subbed.

Captains do not get roundly derided by supporters and the Media in unison for nothing. And just because he's the Captain, does Not elevate him above criticism either. It should mean he is Under Even more scrutiny.

If we don't say it as it is, we will never break our soft culture.

Preciousness has no place regards AFL footballers are concerned.

This MMM rumour sounds a bit far fetched- I don't think Brad would be that enamored with the captaincy that it would dictate his willingness to sign on with us- because as captain he was a farce- and he would know that.

Also how much of a sook does that make him sound? Talk about holding the club to ransom! I won't believe it.

But if it's true.... hmmmmmm. I would say "we are trying to be progressive and you are living in the past man, there's the door!"

Let's just see if this rumour is true.. It's unsubstantiated at this point right?

Jeez we should have a book written about us "The Traitor and the Sook".... Woe are our prima dona players!

There seems to be a real worrysome tone from all the ex players & players from the 2000 to 2006ish era of our club.

The preciousness & Self appreciation just amazes me from all of them when it was their turn.

This just makes me even sadder that we shot junior. The one who was genuinely selfless.

Didn't seem to worry Sam Mitchell that he lost the captaincy

Not a comparable situation.

Mitchell stepped down as a highly successful captain to honour his "Kirribilli Agreement" with Hodge. He had a young family - and wanted a bit more freedom to concentrate on his own game.

Even if Greeny resigns - without pressure to stand down - , the perception will be that he didn't measure up.

As captain he did have to cope with serious off-field tensions. Would the divisions have been wider - and would the players have been even more inconsistent - with someone else in the captain's chair? Without answers to these questions we need to be careful not to bag him outright. It would say something for his resilience if he threw his hat into the ring for a leadership position again.next year.....egocentric perhaps, unrealistic maybe - but tough nontheless

To me it is very important that he remains at the club ... and that we as a group encourage him to play on.

I was just logged onto the Herald Sun live chat with Jon Ralph, with the topic of trades. He mentioned early on that Green was due to sign soon. Actually, he may have said months, but sounds like he will soon eventually!

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
