Craig's ladder positioning with Adelaide in his seasons there before this year go.

2005: 1st

2006: 2nd

2007: 8th

2008: 5th

2009: 5th

2010: 11th

So he got some good results with them, although their finals record was ordinary.

Burns was a great little player & leader at the filth. I put him in the James McDonald mold. If Junior was able to demand the respect of the playing group I reckon Burns will. I really rated him as a player.

[censored] completely forgot he took them to top 2 positions in his first two years, but not being able to take them to a GF in both those years is slightly worrying.

I'd be content with those two, seeing as Malthouse looks unlikely.

Thing that worries me with that TM9, is that his first two years he had a good list and has managed it from 1st to 11th. He's gone in the wrong direction every single year.

Why does he look unlikely because a whole lot of journo's who have been shown to be guessing say it.

Well, as much as Burns has an embarassing YouTube video weighing against him, I'd be thrilled at this set up.

Can't question that West Coast's midfield has lifted.

Experienced with the 'press' style tactics, though I'm not 100% it is the universal solution it is undeniably important to understand.

And I've been a 'Neil Craig brings everything our football department is lacking' broken record for weeks already.

I'm strangely not too fussed about the senior coach - I want a top-rate assistant coach on every line as the most important thing.

West seems to be well regarded, Viney surely is quality. Then I'm not as confident after that but I know there are experienced people at least. I'd chip in a solid whack to help the slub be 100% debt free, 100% salary cap and 100% top rank coaching panel.

What is the difference between Viney and Burns? Apart from him being not being an "outsider?" - not that I reckon that matters..

I think the "outsider" aspect is important because he (and/or other outsiders) would come in without any involvement in the train wreck that epitomised the club in 2011. This would place him in a better position to deal with the issues that led to the dramatic inconsistencies in performance in the first two thirds of the season and the insipid and uninspired way we finished off the season. I don't blame Todd Viney for this - as coach of a team that was badly wounded, lacking in confidence and some key on field personel, he was on a hiding to nothing as coach. He'll be around to help in his capacity as development coach and I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with Todd coaching his own son. So yes, in my view there is a difference and it's one of great significance if we're to extricate ourselves from what was a dire situation by the end of the year.

I have no idea whether the rumour is soundly based but this sort of combination definitely appeals to me.

If Viney is chosen to be coach, Burns won't stay on as head of development.

Didnt GL come out and say we WANT a senior coach or did I hear it wrong? This would go against that big time.

Big big big fan of Neil Craig.

I'd be very happy with this setup.

I didn't think we'd ever have a chance of enticing Craig to the club as we have no links to him.

Never occurred to me that Viney spent a few years working directly under him at the Crows.

This could have serious legs, and it'd be a bloody good result.

Now that Lyon is gone, we only have hope of getting Malthouse... unless you think Eade, Harvey or Laidley are the way to go.

Neil Craig is a senior coach - he'd just be in a senior assistant role.

What about Mark Williams?

I am not keen on an untried coach at all.

Garry made a point of saying we are on track re our coaching appointment and specifically made of point of saying "to the supporters who would be concerned out there, not to worry, everything's on track" or something to that effect.

He said something else before that that caught my attention as well but can't recall (sign of old age lol).

Reading between the lines, he was almost saying "don't worry demonoids....we're well on the path to securing who we were after....all is in order".

Did i misinterpret this?

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Fair point. And good points too whispering Jack-

Will Viney go back to the development role quietly though? I mean will he feel slighted at all- going for the job and being denied?

No, that was the plan and what he said he'd do from the start.

He still hasn't even publicly declared his interest in the senior coaching job, and I don't think he will.

No. Not at all.

GL was very excited to break the news about RL to Freo.

Was also very calm with the inevitable Melbourne coaching & RL questions arose.

I particularly liked the bit about "We never approached or offered a contract to RL. Blah, blah respect whilst team in finals. We 'enquired' with his management that if he was not going to coach STK we would like to chat." To casual by half.

The media do not know a thing that is happening down at Melb because we have the new best in business as our head ATM. Tight ship at Melbourne since GL took over.

Filtered secrets, betting plunges, proposed directions.... GL is using the media circus against itself and it is working a treat.

No news is good news. Nothing to see hear.

This goes one of two ways. We had our man a long time ago and both parties have been cloak and dagger and pointing elsewhere for distraction since.

.... Or GL and the board and Cam Schwab believe thier own spin and we are pathetic amateurs like we have been for 50 years.

I will bet my ... on the former. Time will tell. Early Oct - just in time for me Birfday.

Just off twitter this one is supposedly from Grant Thomas* (and remember that he works with Garry Lyon on Footy Classified -

(* I say supposedly because apparently there are a few people around who fake other people's names on twitter accounts.)

And some time that same evening, he was being quoted by The Hun as saying StK should offer MM an offer he can't refuse now that they drove out Lyon.

Grant Thomas - alterior motives?

Something smells funny.

Neil Craig was good at getting his sides ready so far as conditioned physically and mentally and had some strange methods (hence why he was often referred to as the nutty pofessor) He is however IMHO not a great game day coach, opposed to RL who I think along with MM as the best game day coaches in the AFL

I don't know who will be our next coach but Garry's silence tells me the decision has been made or that he is supremely confidant about something.

Ask yourself do we go all out and put all our eggs into getting Mick and have no quids leftover to surround him with quality assistants

or

Do you go with the best assistant available Burns, Neeld, Sanderson whoever and have the money left over to surround them with experienced assistants eg Craig, Laidley or others out there and grab some other assistants with fresh ideas from other clubs

I don't know the answer but all I know is clubs picking coaches all took gambles on untried coaches with Roos, Lyon, Malthouse, Clakson, the Scott brothers and even pre dimentia Sheeds

Would be a VERY interesting reunion between Malthouse and the Tip Rat Milne if MM was to go to the Saints! hahaha

I think this is a massive longshot!

The whole article is a chance for Grant Thomas to have another dip at St.Kilda...No doubt he does make sense on a lot of points here, but don't think there is much credence to MM going to St.Kilda..

Unlikely. My info Is that MM will spend 2012 working in the a lucrative highly paid media position and collect his pension from Eddie whilst cleaning the locker rooms at the Westpac Centre before accepting a gig at Visy after Carlton does a hatchet job on Ratts.

I quite like the idea. The other two Scotts coaching in the AFL have been very impressive.

Seems to me that we could do a lot worse than that. Buying plan A with a plan B option together with a little "Craig integrity" thrown in. Sounds promising.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
