Just thought about it - if Rush is back, they're the ones with the matchup problem in the midfield. Jamar will smash their rucks.

agreed, but cant let both cotchin and martin run free, that will give them the chance of getting a win!

Tell Jordie to do what he did to Pendlebury to one of them.

I can't understand all the Rivers to Vickery posts. Rivers will get killed.

Actually I can't understand ever naming Rivers on a direct opponent. He has proven that he is not tall enough to play on the talls, not fast enough to play on leading players, gets killed body on body, and can't run with a mobile player.

Basically Rivers is only a good defender when he doesn’t have any one to defend, but who wouldn’t be? Every other player in the league that plays the easy third man up role gets a player tagging him, but not Rivers, as he offer so little threat of hurting them on the rebound, and his disposal is so poor the opposition know that if they let him kick the ball it will do more harm than good.

I honestly do not understand how he gets a game. He can't defend, and he offers no attack. Plays the easiest position in the game and still struggles. Every week that Warnock plays he takes either the best or second best forward, and overall breaks about even. Rivers hardly ever plays on a dangerous forward, and when he does he gets smashed. I bet Warnock would love to have a few games running around without an opponent like Rivers, instead he gets dropped for struggling on the best in the game.

Rubbish post.

Go and have a good look at how Rivers has played this year. I'm not saying he's a superb one-on-one player, but you have given him no credit whatsoever for some of his spoiling, hard running, rebounding, and providing assistance to Frawley/MacDonald/Garland/Warnock/whoever else.

He is playing very nice football at the moment.

I don't like the idea of Martin playing on Vickery when he's in the forward line. Martin is turning in to a damaging attacking weapon, I don't want to use him as a negating defender. If we've got Gawn in the side as well then we've wasted a runner just so we can use Martin as a defender 50% of the match. It seems to me to be an outcome where the best possible result is a break even with Martin and Vickery cancelling each other out, when we should be looking for outcomes where we're better off than they are.

I don't know the answer though. How have other clubs (successfully) matched up on Vickery when he goes forward? There must be another way he can be matched up on without taking our attacking ruckmen out of attack.

Agree with that, we lose if we play Martin as a defender.

We need to back ourselves in. Vickery isn't Jonathan Brown. Garland and Rivers have both succeeded (and failed, sure) against taller opponents. Let's back our defenders in to do the job against a 20-game youngster and not fluff around with what works for us instead.

'Providing Assistance' is what he is able to do because he can't be relied on to defend a player, and the fact that he is rarely manned up by the opposition and still does not dominate shows his value rebounding. Warnock and MacDonald could do as good a job spoiling if they were allowed to run around by themselves, but instead they actually have to play on someone. I can't think of a player in the AFL that has an easier job than Rivers. He is marked way to easily on here and by the club.

Nahas - Bennell

Martin - when forward MacDonald, when midfield h2h with Beamer

Cotchin - McKenzie h2h all day

Riewoldt - Chip

Vickory - Martin all day

King - Bartram

Deledio - Trengove h2h all day

I'm sure they'd be happy to replace him in the 22 if there was a better option, but Bartram has some good qualities that we don't see in others at the moment. Bartram is much better one-on-one than Bennell.

I agree, and it's something I wrestle with often.

Nicholson needs to show it over an extended period, but I don't see why he couldn't be a better alternative.

Afl website says Jake King will be suspended for this match. That redudces their speed a bit.

Has his appeal been heard yet? If not, then that is not necessarily so.

Key Match ups aside.

Tigers have played at the Gabba and SCG in the last two weeks. And they hired a bus to come home from Sydney because of the Ash Clouds...

While our last two games have been at the MCG. Therefore we should have fresher legs. In theory.

Melbourne coaches should be telling the boys to try run Richmond off there legs.

It's at 5PM today. Just to clarify, he's simply having his case heard at the tribunal, as opposed to appealing in the way Trengove did.

this will be our 3rd game in 12 days, which i guess cancels out the travelling factor

Can't be relied upon...? C'mon Thomo, you're better than that surely.

Go ask Dennis Commetti and all in sundry who were at the Bombers match (one of many examples) on Rivers' game. One-on-one defeated his opponent. And when required saved his teammates from embarrassment as well.

He is marked way to easily on here and by the club.

I'd argue the complete opposite here. Too many have their knives out and are none the wiser.

Yeah I was about to post that; this is our second consecutive six day break, with another one to follow. Same deal, really.

Disagree, I'm not better than that.

Rivers may occasionally beat his oponant, but he can not be relied on to regualy beat a direct opponant, unlike Garland and Frawley. That is why he does not, get matched up on the best forwards unless there is no other option. I didn't think that fact would be indispute, as it has been that way for his whole career.

I'd have to agree with the first bit.

My RFC sauce says Miller plays 2nd ruck and Vickery KPF.

This is correct. Miller stint in the ruck was absolutely terrible last weekend. I reckon they will put Vickery in the ruck when he gets nothing down forward. Our defenders are much better than brisbanes on the weekend.

Makes a big difference when you win like we did. Just like a training run.

Whatever, we need Rivers deep. Not up around the wing or front edge of the square.. Rivers best work is to give a chop out to our other tall defenders, or drop into the hole or just 'better read' the play, through cutting off the ball coming in.

Thats why I have garland on Miller, expecting Miller will play the old lead up to the wing role. I have no idea IF he has changed that or not?

Frawley has not been in his best form this Year, appearing not as fit, but also not as strong. I feel he's down on confidence against the bigger guys since his pre season ijury and I think he's down on power overhead. This would seem to possibly true, with the coaches opting to play him often on smaller opponents this year..

So I haven't ruled out Warnock yet.

Posted

Disagree.

Reiwoldt gets Frawley (Will match him body on body and can exploit him on the rebound)

Garland gets Vickery

McKenzie on Cotchin

Martin v Beamer in the middle and if he goes forward then someone like Jones can take him (would love to have seen Bull Tapscott take him however...)

Morton to take Deledio and wear him like a glove. That shuts down most of their play makers then and i will back the rest of our team to destroy them...

I like your thinking! Good plan, but is Beamer a stopper or give him a shot to take on Martin?

Yep. Miller was slaughtered in the ruck. I don't think i've seen him ruck for the Tigers before last week though.

Vickery stayed forward just about all game.

Ironically he rucked for us, against the Tigers, in 2009.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
