Razor Ray and the team in Yellow

That was reprehensible out there today. Either the interpretation was the absolute technical one or it was simply not seen. Jesus.

EDIT: This isn't a 'hurr we would have won if the umpires were fairer' thread, but more an outright criticism of the overall terrible quality of today's match officials.

Umps were woeful. The bald-headed moron gives out 50's like they're going out of fashion.

I think we would have lost by 60 points if the umpiring was balanced. Still a thrashing, but they were against us all day.

Yup, shocking. We would have lost by 10 goals if they'd been better.

Holding the ball q1 against Jones when Ball had the ball.

Goal square free for holding again Green - hasn't been paid since 1931, and not paid later when a tackle/shepherd was applied to a Demon.

Blatant push in the back in our forward line, umpire in perfect position, ingested the whistle.

Both teams, all day, routinely, moving 1-2m up on the mark with nothing paid until the second half.

Decision after decision pinging our guys for pushing in marking contests, not the other way.

Not the game changing factor but helped contribute to the boys vs men vibe - whenever we had a go we were penalized for something stupid.

I tend disagree. There were a few atrocious decisions but you get those every game.

You get the lion's share of frees when you're first to the ball. Collingwood just outran, outmuscled and outnumbered us all over the park. The frees flowed from there.

Totally agree! We came off a game last week that wasn't over officiated and there was not one 50 meter penalty called to this weeks technical [censored]!

They are about as consistent as we are!

This is true - you need to fight to put yourself in the position where you're more likely to get free.

You need to make your own luck, in a way.

+1 Whingeing rubbish.....beginning to sound like the ignorant Collingwood supporters behind me yesterday. Go hard and be first for the ball, get free kicks. Bad decisions abound no doubt, but they even up in the end.

There is nothing worse than threads bleating about the umpires when their performance was nothing to complain about when the focus of concern should be the performance of MFC. Amazing

I reckon it's pretty easy to have a dig at the umpires and focus on the MFC performance, given the number of active threads on Demonland.

Anyhow, Gieschen highlighted two instances in which we should have received 50 metre penalties. One was in the first quarter when we were ~12 points down, and another was early in the second when we were 16 points down.

I heard one stat on thr radio about Ray C - at point he had paid 11 frees to the Filth and 2 to Melb.

Says it all.

That would have been the period where the irate Demon near me was yelling out "You just love them, don't you? You just love Collingwood, you leper!". I was sort of laughing at first but after the seventh or eighth time in not many minutes it just became painful because the fella was looking more and more right.

Still, I don't normally whine about the umps but this thread made me think of that.

Nah the umps were shocking and biased.

Look, I know there is the whole 'hurr we lost cos of the umps' argument. That's not the point I'm making. If you go through and watch the game again, it is painfully apparent that in a number of situations the umpire - in particular Ray Chamberlain - pays the most technical interpretation of the rules rather than that which is in the 'spirit of the game'. Couple that with 3-4 bleedingly obvious decisions which they missed and it adds up to a terrible umpiring day.

Regardless of whether Melbourne is playing or not, the umpiring was awful. Especially in comparison to the Essendon and Carlton games, where it was in fact quite good and the game was allowed to flow.

Sadly, the pace of play of our modern game together with numerous rule changes has left the umpires totally out of their depth in my opinion.

They should certainly be full time employed by the AFL.

I feel that way they would certainly improve and not appear to be so biased through inept calls!!

Nope... in the first quarter I think we led the frees 10 - 9; that was when we were playing attacking football and going hard at it, often first in the contest. In the last quarter we were behind in every play and the ratio of frees against reflects that fairly accurately.

But, I do have to say I get a laugh out of the conspiracy theories that abound in these umpiring threads.

did he or did he not explicitily state that he wasnt blaming the result on the umpires. Amazing.

regardless of the final scoreline we were incredibly shafted in that match

we were still in it when Trengove kicked an awesome goal that they took off him, could have been a momentum shifter, you never know

Jeff Geishen's review of the umpiring on th AFL website specifically refers to 2 instances in the Melb v Coll match where the Dees were wrongfully denied 50m penalties. Once when we were 10 pts down and the other when we are 16 pts down.

COuld well have changed the outcome of the match. We'll never know.

Ray C is a shockingly short man that has major issues with ego.

I am going to bleat and not about umpiring and the MFC but in general

1/ The holding the ball when dragging the ball in rule. If you drag it in and make no attempt and there is a way to release then ok but as it is being umpired at the moment - as soon as you drag the ball in it gives the opposition carte blanche to dive on top of you, pour fifteen tonnes of cement on the contest and keep the ball under you with no chance of release and the result will be holding the ball. It is breeding a game full of stalkers and lurkers.

2/ as an umpire ( especially on this rule) if you cant really see - DONT GUESS. The amount of times the ball is dragged in but pops aways from "draggee" but the umpire is to the back of the congestion and cant see and still pays the free is in infuriating....unmpires - if your not sure - then do nothing.

I thought they umpired well Geelong/Hawthorn on this but were horrible at other games i saw.

We kicked the goal straight after that anyways. Umpires were pretty good I thought. I yelled and screamed at the game, but when i saw the replay, they were pretty much spot on. You need two eyes to judge the Umps performance properly.

While it looked like it was men against an under 19 team with a few seniors thrown in (as described by one commentator) the umpiring was dire. ALl season, umpires consistently have stood on the wrong side of the pack and given frees when they can't see what has happened to the ball. On Monday, the ball came free from a pack on the crowd side, only for the umpire to be watching from the blocked side....and gave holding the ball when there was no way he could confirm it was still in the pack. According to radio (Triple M I think) Razor gave 12 frees against Melbourne, 11 of which were from 80 metres or more away..

I'm almost certain that in the NFL they wear noise reducing ear pieces to negate the home crowd's. The umpires honestly looked like they were waiting for Collingwood supporters to go up so that they could give a bigger cheer. Im very two eyed even when i'm watching the dees but on Monday we got d**ked hard!

Its obvious. They need to umpire like they do the Grand Finals. Just let it go and pay the obvious ones. Dont be over technical with interpretations. Ray Chamberlains umpiring is a disgrace. He is way too over technical and you just cant be with the way the modern game is. Let them play Ray

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
