No chance we'll use pick 3, Vineys a good little player, but not a top 5 pick.

Pretty sure we've stuffed up enough picks to not get this one right.

Vineys around where Kennedys at, probably 8-9.

If GC want Viney at 2, by all means, take him.

Thank God you aren't the MFC recruiter then. Not taking Viney will be stuffing it up... again.

I tell ya what.

It would be awesome to have 3.4. 13 and then Viney.

Seriously good crop of kids coming in.

But I can live with Viney, 4, 13 and 21 (is it?)

I could also live with Viney, 4, Caddy, 21

Makes you stop and think: damn, we've got it pretty good here. We'll have three potential A-graders before the top eight enters the draft equation.

They can keep jostling to maximise their fortunes but I wouldn't fret if Viney goes at 3. He's a top-fiver on ratings anyway.

I know we've been in this position before in 2009. Not every draft is a flawless exercise though, regardless of your strong hand. (See: Hawthorn 2005)

As long as they can squeeze at least one decent player out of it. And we did in Trengove. So did Hawthorn with Birchall. And we should match 2010's report card with Viney before considering who else might get picked up.

Having the security of Viney in the bag really helps in this process.

See - this is what I find fascinating.

We rip into recruiters for getting it wrong but collating what we all think here, we get expert (hmm) opinions ranging anywhere from worth pick 3 down to 21 at best.

He may well be the best player. He is definitely top 5, as proven by the fact that GC want him at pick 2.

Huh? Proven? Who said they want him at pick 2? Question mark?

We'll soon find out if they want him at 2. If they do they will call his name out. If not it is bluff and bluster (good name for a legal from btw). As suggested by a few posters they want a sweetener not to call his name out. I reckon the dees won't mind giving up a little sugar (do you take Pettard with your tea caddy) but i doubt they will be too generous

I'm a betting man and i'm betting they're bluffing. Chances they''ll read out JV's name at number 2 = 5-10%

Yes but I'm not so sure we've got GC on the ropes - maybe we have offered them 13 for Caddy and they're trying get us to up the ante. You can't blame them - that's what this whole thing is about - GWS and GC squeezing some incentive out of MFC not to bid. That way all 3 clubs win. The simplest deal with GC would be an overs-trade for Caddy. The all-round lose will be if a deal can't be struck and we're forced to take him at 3 - that'll be a negotiate failure by someone - and not necessarily us.

GC is some scenarios may need us as much as we need them. Everybody say Hi to Kurt in Adelaide. B)

Have a think about this forum post draft.

Is there ANY way that everyone will be happy?

The only thing that the club can control is the manner in which we conduct ourselves throughout the whole draft process.

I hope they start thinking about the culture which they hope to personify when actingthroughout the next few months.

Why would they Bluff? Their is no advantage for them whatsoever to be bluffing about this.

In fact its just going to make us not bother discussing Caddy trades with them, so they are just burning out a potential trade partner.

What are you talking about? Of course there is an advantage to be bluffing about this. If we think there is a genuine risk they will nominate Viney (and we really, really want him) we are more likely to do a deal with them that involves as part of said deal them not nominating him.

For example (and in complete contradiction to your point about Caddy) we could offer pick 13 and Pettard (or Bate, Morton, Cook etc etc or even a combination deal) for Caddy and a promise not to pick Viney. Forget the AFL direction that this is illegal - impossible to prove so all bets are off in that regard.

The extent to which we think any bluff they make (for example through orchestrated leaks to the media, football fan sites such as DL and social media) is for real will influence our preparedness to trade. The point about good bluffing is not knowing whether it is for real or not.

I'd love to play poker with you BTW

Go away GC. Havent you learnt from Josh Caddy who wants to come home. Jack wants to play for the club his dad played and captained at and also the club he grew up barracking for. Jack has been training with the boys and is settled in melbourne where his family and mates are.

For the 1st time we will actually be able to pick up a decent father/son. Dont wreck this for us. We know Jack is ready to play senior football. But he wouldnt want to play for you. Leave him alone.

Here is what I don't understand. Why doesn't he pull a Nik Nat?

Come out publicly saying that he has lived around the country but that he want's to stay in Melbourne as he feels it's his home and he'll play his best here. The kid is going to play AFL and get drafted by someone so it's not like he's doing a disservice to his chances on draft day.

That way GCS and GWS know that he'll ask to be traded home after 2 years if they chance their hand. It's not draft tampering by us as there is plenty of precedents of this by other players and I think it set's him up well as a future player for the club that he is 97% likely to play for anyway. He starts the relationship on the right foot.

Because none of that even happened!

I remember him saying prior to the draft he was happy to play anywhere and was genuinely excited just to get an opportunity to play in the AFL. I also remember his mum saying she'd pack the whole family and move down to Melbourne if he was drafted at number 1 and seemed happy to do so.

Or we take JV in the 2nd round because GWS and GC don't rate him as a top 8 - 10 pick and don't want to risk missing out on their first preference?

Nope - if Viney goes 2nd round you'll see a signficant trade between MFC and one or both of GWS and GC.

If we need to use pick 3 to get Viney, then use pick 3 already! We've fecked about with the drafting system/priority picks for too long now. Our culture is changing and blokes like Viney are part of it. Bring him in!

OK!

Hi Kurt. Do you like Melbournes style, Or do you prefer the Sun Surf & Gals? Whats your favourite colours?

Do you want a shopover on your way North? Or could you be interested in Chapel Street?

PS: Keep away from the North end of our city. Used litter everwhere, blowin' in the wind.

You've lost me.

didnt take much..

I was agreeing with you in the main ( not sold on Caddy )

How can we not be happy with whats likely to arrive

Exactly. Its like Bingo you just have to get the numbers in the right order that works for everyone. When somebody is being a little difficult - sometimes you leak to the newspapers - old habits die hard.

Trust this to happen to us, why couldn't Viney be ready to pick next season when we don't have 2 picks to use.

Posted

We might have to give them Martin to get what we want. They need a ruck man to help Zac now frasher has retired.

Someone may have asked this already (I skipped a few pages) but is it possible that GWS or GC could nominate Daniher rather than Viney ?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
