Big Milestone for the Jones boy this week.

I first saw him at Sandy game in Tassie v the Devils, where he racked up the possessions, broke tackles and was very solid (Hughes also kicked 5 that day).

There was loads of excitement on this site regarding his first game. Especially after he was given the number 2 jumper.

For some reason I was in Melbourne of the week of his first game. Standing proudly I yelled "Go number 2" as I was sitting in the members as he came off the bench (I couldn’t help myself, I think I also turned to my brother and said...."Is that Robbie" to the audible groan of the grumpy demon faithful behind). Yze kicked 5 that day as we crushed the doggies. Jones got 17 touches that day and laid a couple of hard tackles.

His "break out" game came a few weeks later with 25 touches and 2 brandlow votes. He even played a couple of finals that year.

It is easy to forget that Nathan is 23 years old. I have got a lot of time for the boy. His head is in the right place. He puts in 100% every time. He is the kind of guy you want around the club, likeable, hard working, diligent and he loves the club. He is also pretty good on the run in front of the sticks.

Good on you Nathan Jones, great 100 games.

Congratulations. I like Jones and we need more with his attitude.

I think the continual criticism of Jones on this site is pathetic. He is one guy, in particular this year, that has actually played consistent footy, and is showing some form of leadership when most are crying out for it. Last year he (and Moloney to some degree) started to try and make the players gel off-field, especially the younger guys, so I have great respect for Nathan.

Nathan will never be a superstar, and to be honest, we don't need him to be. He has generally been a reliable performer and plays to his strengths well. He has also played some 90% of games possible since his debut, which to me shows that he obviously does the job required of him more often than not (althought the Jones-bashers will say he has played so many becuase we have had no depth).

Well done Nathan.

I like him and he is only 23 and one of our leaders. Really highlights how young the list is. Hope they can pull of a win for him.

Couldn't agree more.... he embodies the reason I can remain loyal to this team despite some of the garbage they have served up this season. His development has been consistent, and he is as hard a worker as I have seen. The criticism of him is so misplaced as to be pathological. At the game on Saturday, after Jones had kicked long from the back pocket to a leading Watts on the wing, where the contest took the ball out of bounds, one of OUR supporters yelled, and I quote "you're rubbish Jones, I'd rather have 17 players out there than have you making up 18". What is that? Honestly, where does that come from? Needless to say, he was given an equivalent level of abuse from ALL the Melbourne supporters around within ear shot. I can only hope he felt like the idiot that he is. I was at the game with my brother, a fellow supporter and psychiatrist, and his professional spin on the Jones-hating is interesting. He has effectively become, largely because he is so visible, is a midfielder, and just doesn't miss games, emblematic of this team and all its frustrations. Even when we play well, there are those who will never consider the part Jones has in it. He is not the talisman of victory. When we play badly, he is noticed to the disproportionate opposite, he is it seems the talisman of defeat. Why this is so is probably unanswerable....

Well done Nathan Jones, you are a footballer's footballer.

I reckon Jones and Watts have been by far the most unfairly chastised players I have seen on this site. Ever. It seems that old stigmas die hard.

People contine to knock Jones' disposal and decision making but his disposal efficieny is actually quite reasonable and compares favourably to Sylvia, Davey, Gysberts and everyone's new love child Rohan Bail. He also hit Bartram with one of the best foot passes I have seen from a Demon all season at the end of the first quarter, which shoed amazing foot skills and vision.

Jones deserves the congratulations of the club and all supporters for his passion, attitude, endeavour and output over this season and seasns past.

Well done Jonesy.

Absolutely! May not be the most gifted player going around. But, he always gives 100%, and is an important part of the team. I kinda think those who really know what's what (like the coaching staff) rate the lad rather highly.

Well done, Nathan!

That pass was sublime. Not many would remember it because they would be too focused on him making a misatke to actually know all the good things he does.

The problem with Jones is that he is used as a scapegoat on here, because people are as weak as pi$$ to wake up to reality. Anyone that is still wishing we kept Bruce, Junior and Miller for "leadership" sake - I'm talking to you! But still, you'd rather hang on to blokes that either never could play at that level, blokes that made a major contribution to games lost last year, and blokes that were just to damn old to be considered for another 12 months.

It was a pass to equal any of Aaron Davey or Stephen Tingay's best.....thrillworthy!

This guy is the heart of our team at the moment, every player (including Green, Davey, etc) should be looking to his example, imagine the improvement if the more talented players on our list gave the same effort as Jones.

Congratulations on 100 games to a true leader at our club.

To link in with the whole "culture" talk going around, I think an example is that Green is our current captain, Grimes is already being touted as the next one, when in my opinion Moloney would have been a better choice for current captain and Jones possibly for next captain. These days the media stuff is shared around so the captain no longer needs to be the sole public representative, and the guys I have mentioned really seem to be more of the spiritual leaders onfield that our current and (apparently) future captains.

Posted

Jonesy would make a great future captain, but can you imagine the meltdown on Demonland from the 'he's C-grade' brigade?

I must admit that I used to be a big Jones basher but I truly admire the way he goes about his footy these days. You can see the passion and effort that he puts in week after week and he can always be relied upon to perform to the best of his abilities and give his all. Congratulations Jonesy on 100 games and I look forward to many more.

Hard to think of a player in the modern era who has had to shoulder as much responsibility in such a garbage side so young. Our 23 year old veteran. Well done Nathan.

HALLELUJAH. Finally after all the time I have been reading this site, I have come across a thread about Jonesy that has nothing but positivity. I bloody love the bloke. Despite him not being a topliner, we would win plenty more games with 18 Jonesys on the field than we do at the moment. We would actually have a team that plays tough and hard, with an obvious will to win. For my money I'd replace Green with him as Captain in a heartbeat. There is not one player at the club that bleeds red and blue more than him IMO.

Congratulations Jonesy, and thanks for 100 great games. Here's to 100 more to come champ.

There have been many 23 year old veterans in the history of VFL/AFL including a few captains

Many 23 year olds are playing their 6 year of AFL football, so for some, 23 years is not that young

But back to Nathan, yeah accepts responsibility and works his butt off. We'd all give our left one (and right one) to play 100 AFL games.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
