Mate.... bottom line is money talks and that's all there is to it. He'll get to play his beloved football nonetheless and perhaps make history in helping GWS achieve their first EVER premiership!

HOWEVER...

- ALL his family are in Melbourne.

- He'll never get the same crowds (the Dees' numbers are building!).

- Victoria is the home of AFL!

- The best stadium in the world will no longer be his HOME GROUND.

It's either "GWS $$" or "the value of what the MFC could soon become".

Not to mention still pretty ok money, even if he stays for a lesser amount he is going to have a pretty comfortable life I'd say. However I know what you mean, If I get offered say 300k p.a from my current employer, and someone tries to coax me over with a 1 million plus p.a offer, I'm going to consider it long and hard. Money does talk. Just hope those other point you made yell louder!

I don't like the line:

The same Melbourne that manipulated results in 2009 to ensure a priority pick, meaning it was guaranteed Scully and Jack Trengove.

Two points:

1) There is a difference between trying to lose and not having winning as your top priority. Melbourne were the latter.

2) I would accept that Melbourne "manipulated results" if Jordan McMahon was paid to miss after the siren or if the players were told to lose, but he wasn't and they weren't.

Buckley also rejected strong overtures from North. I read he declined their offer because he wanted to play in a premiership club. Add another two missed flag opportunities.

We weren't trying too lose but we did have Frawley and Warnock playing out of the forward line with Miller in the ruck being roved by Nev Jetta, We weren't exactly trying to win.

Any criticism of us tanking is irrelevant to this situation. We tanked because we had to. It was the best thing for the club's survival and the obvious thing to do. Under the AFL's drafting rules we deserved the picks we got.

In relation to Jimmy's dealings with Tom Scully I suspect that while Jim will desperately want him to stay for the sake of the club, he would also be saying "do what is best for you". Jimmy's work with young people is all about kids reaching their potential and giving them the power to make good choices. I don't know Jimmy personally but have seen him work with kids and it seems that his connection with individuals is very important. I can't imagine him attempting to coerce Scully with pressure or blackmail. Hopefully an honourable approach from a very sincere man on behalf of a club with a great history and an exciting future will be enough.

As an afterthought. Wouldn't it be a good idea for a young man with Scully's talent, to play on with the Dees for two or three more years (probably on a very healthy contract that Melbourne will offer), in the epicentre of the AFL, experience some success, build his reputation as a footballer and his currency as a football commodity, and then seek the big bikkies. Like Judd did. That way, he will still be a very rich young man but have a great playing experience to go with it.

I hate it too and I wouldn't want Scully to go in three years. But, If I was Scully, driven by a desire to be the best footballer I could be and about to make a decision that gave me a great football career and financial security, I think it would be a wise choice, and still leaves the option of staying on at Melbourne beyond that time with a very healthy contract, or hawking yourself around to the highest bidder. Hopefully he would choose to stay, but if not, at least we would get another few years from him.

FA would only kick in after 7 years IIRC, and even then we could match the offer.

My main concern is that the GWS poaching committee back-doored us while we were in China.

Possibly contacting Scully's parents and offering huge dollars.

I'm hoping that when Scully flew home early from China for family reasons it wasn't because they were being bullied

into signing with GWS while we were on "tour" and not able to keep an eye on the situation.

As yet no one has come up with any logical reason why he would be having a Press conference to say anything other than he's re-signed. Anything else is just fueling the GWS talk. Surely the club is now smarter than that.
