THE TOM SCULLY TO GWS THREAD

How many uncontracted players can GWS sign? And do players such as Folau count or is it only established AFL players?

I don't think that Scully is going to go as there is no incentive I can see other than money. He does not seem the type chase money, but he definitely seems the type that wants to win premierships.

There is no point in carrying on as if we've already lost him or we're going to lose him, as that will only lower our chances of retaining him. We need to support him every time he takes to the field in the red and blue and hopefully this will make his decision easy.

I have stated elsewhere that the negotiations will be when the negotiations will be - this post is not an attempt to say "Sign up now or else" (bad strategy) - it is to highlight to those calling for Tom to say something to appease us, that you are better off saying nothing at all, except of course " I have renewed my contract".

From the Geelong advertiser

"I see myself very much as a leader on the field and I enjoy that part of it, but there's parts I need to work on off the field," Ablett said in April. "I'd love to captain the Geelong Football Club one day, it's just something that would be great to do, it'd definitely be an honour. I love the club."

Another good example of a player making all the right noises right up until the time he asked to be traded to Carlton !

Whilst it makes good reading and the heart feel all warm and gooey, I don't place a great deal of store in players saying " I want to be a demon for life".

I don't need Tom Scully to say anything that will make me feel warm and gooey except " I have signed an MFC Contract"

You are so an ostrich.

Nutbean making the most sense in this thread I vote.

Axis of Bob with the best post.

Cali with the most handwringing.

And C&B with the most crazy.

It's been a wild ride...

I am more interested now in all the members of this forum (and BigFooty) that apparently know someone who has told them/indicated to them that Scully is a) signing with MFC soon, b ) has signed with GWS, c) has in fact not signed but is waiting until end of year or d) insert other situation here. So many people have this inside information despite it all contradicting each other. What is the motivation for pretending that you have inside knowledge when, in fact, you know nothing?

People believe you to the point where they come on a forum and question why so many posters would supply bogus information that they believed was true.

oh yeah show me all the crazy calls why don't you

my stance has always been that extra cash will trump family, prestige, success, whatever the likes of KS and other wishful thinkers want to throw up.. and that GWS will most definitely be putting extra cash on the table

if that's crazy talk then I guess I'm guilty as charged

Not that.

Everything you say around that has been the 'crazy'.

It's a harsh term.

Maybe...odd then.

This scully situation is crazy I am to worried that he has agreed to their deal because why wouldn’t he come out and say im staying with Melbourne im just not signing until the end of the year ? anyway if you guys have forgotten that there is a kid called Jack Viney who seems itching to play for the red and blue and looks to be a huge talent but will all have to wait and see what happens god I hope Scully stays though

Because his manager would say it would mean around $100k in his next contract.

If you say you aren't leaving - why would anyone pay you more to stay?

Keep them coming fellas, I am bored and I am willing.

OK.

Why hasn't Scully held a press conference to douse the rumours?

Surely the fact that every rumour on the radio/TV/newspapers says that Scully has signed means he has signed?

Who wouldn't take that much money?

Doesn't this, along with the Judd and Burgoyne situations, show that we are still a club that no one wants to play for?

I'll pose the question again, why would you sign without hearing your current clubs best offer ?

I am up to the task!

Why hasn't Scully held a press conference to douse the rumours?

You're assuming one is tied to the other - that a press conference will douse the rumours. He can only give platitudes when certainty is what they want. The only press conference I want to see with Tom this year is his re-signing presser.

Surely the fact that every rumour on the radio/TV/newspapers says that Scully has signed means he has signed?

Every branch comes from the same trunk. Rumours usually have multiple heads but the same body. The number of people saying 'rumour as fact' is irrelevant. Dick Cheney was a master of this - he once cited an interview as evidence of 'people saying' a particular POV, the interview was one he had done a few days earlier.

Who wouldn't take that much money?

Someone who values other things more. Take it from someone who has moved away from all those things that don't have a dollar figure - it's tough.

And, besides, anyone will tell him he will earn about $10m (gross) purely from salary payments from the Dees over his career anyway.

Doesn't this, along with the Judd and Burgoyne situations, show that we are still a club that no one wants to play for?

This is at the heart of why I continually talk about the MFCSS and why I want us to have more confidence as a club and a supporter group. It's a nonsensical fear if you believe in the future that Stynes-Schwab-Connolly-Bailey are bringing to the club.

And that is all.

Note: TU is forwarding those questions, he is not supporting them.

I'll have a crack.

OK.

Why hasn't Scully held a press conference to douse the rumours?

He's a second year player who has already has his management release a statement.

2nd year players with limited media experience do not front the media and should not be expected to.

Especially when a sufficient statement has been released that says the issue will be decided at the end of the season, and paid no more credence to until then.

Surely the fact that every rumour on the radio/TV/newspapers says that Scully has signed means he has signed?

Of course not. Rumours are just that.

If GWS has not signed him as stated, it is in their best interests to spread such rumours.

They should be paid no heed.

Who wouldn't take that much money?

Many AFL players who are already being paid handsomely, who do not place a bit of extra money as their highest priority, when they already have more than they know what to do with.

Doesn't this, along with the Judd and Burgoyne situations, show that we are still a club that no one wants to play for?

That wasnt the case with Joel MacDonald, nor was it the case with Watts, Grimes, Frawley & Trengove when they re-signed.

Ta.

Just in case there are any others out there who, like Loges, didn't realise that.

T U if this is how you really feel, i am suprised, you must know a thing or 2 about Marketing coupled with supply and demand. Contract negotiations would be being sorted ON BOTH SIDES as we now speak.

The best thing for Tom Scully to do now is to train his Butt off and remain silent.

The statement was released last week, and my mum always taught me "No news is Good News"

Patience to you all grasshoppers please.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
