31st of March comparison:

2009 - we had 27,128 members

2010 - we had 27,595 members

2011 - we will have ????????

Now as @ 16th March - 28,634. Already:

1,506 better off than at 31st March 2009.

1,039 better off than at 31st March 2010.

clearly losing momentum JCB (tongue firmly in cheek)

I wonder how many we would have now if we had won on friday night!

Let me think. 28,635 ?

You would be pretty hard pressed to find anyone that wouldn't sign up because of a practise match two weeks before the season.

Fwiw, nearly 600 have signed up since Friday. Must have been impressive on Friday !

Wouldn't have made a difference.

The people on here are apart of the 28k or they will never buy a membership.

One in particular comes to mind, but that horse is well and truly beaten...

"It's easy to sum it up if you're just talking about practice. We're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we're talking about practice.

I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that? ... Now I know that I'm supposed to lead by example and all that but I'm not shoving that aside like it don't mean anything.

I know it's important, I honestly do but we're talking about practice. We're talking about practice man. We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We're not talking about the game. We're talking about practice. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you've seen me play right, you've seen me give everything I've got, but we're talking about practice right now. ...

Hey I hear you, it's funny to me too, hey it's strange to me too but we're talking about practice man, we're not even talking about the game, when it actually matters, we're talking about practice ... How the hell can I make my teammates better by practicing?"

A little AI perspective...

When all the players do that telethon membership night soon,

the membership will rise up more. Especially with the 10,000 not signed from last year.

40,000 members is definately achievable

GO DEES!!

Luv weet bix- tske 3 every morn with Lite milk. 2 peices of whole meal bread with either vege or peanut butter- just to get ready for 2hours of gym every day. Will need to add to this to get ready to take you on in first round of Ultimate footy. Furthermore apologies- I didn't see your earlier post re amount of members you expect. YOU will be around the mark like you normally are but not quite there like always.Have a great day.Leave again for overseas tomorrow - so BEST OF LUCK re your 1st round you will ruddy need it.I'll finalise my team before start of the 1st match re th 24th..

I think you seriously under estimate how many half committed supporters there are out there!

I know three who will become a member if they think we are in for a good year, that is their normal practise.

They have not purchased yet and one told me last saturday night that after poor pre season form he is waiting for the first game result.

A poor showing and his money will stay in his pocket.

I still believe that a win last Friday night would mean more members today.

I seriously under estimate half committed supporters ? I wasn't aware of that. One thing I'm sure of is a practise match two weeks before the season, the real thing, means squat. The NAB Cup loss against Fremantle in week One last year highlighted this on these very boards. I doubt very much a win last Friday would have signed significantly more than the 600 that have already signed up since the loss.

I'm backing our own supporters/members in to reach a tally of 36,878. We are 3,000 ahead on the same time last year and I'd expect my figure estimate to be around the final tally mark. What's yours ?

Then your friends have never been members at all.

Its people like that who will always find an excuse not to buy a membership. Its such a crud metric that defies logic and reason the more you think about.

I am still contemplating getting one but live in an annoying area that is quite a hike to Melbourne but not far enough to be eligible for country membership. I plan to go to first game so might visit a booth then :)

I have no idea!

I am simply making the point that a win against Hawthorn is in my view likely to increase the take up of membership at a higher rate than a loss.

I maintain that view.

I know the friend that I mentioned very well, I know he buys a membership based early season results.

Other wise he buys at the gate for a lower number of games he attends.

Sorry RR you are wrong I know this person very well. He buys based on early season results.

I do not like it but that is him and I do not think he is on his own.

The number of people who would decide to get a membership on the basis of a sparsely reported win over someone in Tassie could be measured on one hand...

The Dees supporters who give a frack about practice games are, or were going to be, members anyway.

Many are like this- they like to see promise before they put up the hard cash.

Very pompous and high horse of some . Castigating any who's life might not revolve around an unerring commitment of funds annually.

This is the real world and in it people have choices. They also have various livelihood commitments and then there's discretionary spending. Being a member is a choice. It's how many wish to follow the game and support the club. Some aren't that fussed. That's not a crime. We ought not dispense such folk to the fires of heresy but embrace them and encourage such supporters to attend more and more.

It bemuses me when people act all lah de dah , they're members and surely any fair dinkum supporter would/ought to be !! Many of us are whether it's value or not. We do because we can . Some can't and some don't. It might not sit well with some that there are those that actually feel return on spending is a reasonable prerequisite but that's their prerogative .

There are many reasons why footy followers support a team. We could use as many as we can attract irregardless of the how or why.

Very nicely put. I was going to write something similar but you did it perfectly for me.

Edit: Add my prediction of 37,242

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
