Unfortunately I just caught the end of the boys training today and wasn't going to bother posting, but from what I saw in two minutes...

Jack Watts - had to look hard to be sure it was him, and maybe because he's shaved his head, but he looked to have significantly bulked up. He is definately not like Morton, rather it looks like he will fill out really well. both his upper and lower body looked heavier, and I reckon by the end of this pre-season (barring injury) he will be close to his ideal playing weight. After that just a matter of definition and strengthening.

Jake Spencer - Watched Jake having a few shots on goal from fifty (think he's getting confident after his feats in China). It is clear that he has been working hard on his kicking technique. Where normally he looks like he's playing hacky sack when kicking the footy, he was guiding the ball quite nicely from hand to foot and was kicking a good distance. As mentioned last week, he is looking super strong and next year he and Jamar should be a physically intimidating duo in the centre square for the Dees. Positive signs.

Jordie McKenzie - Looks physically bigger as well, good muscle definition.

Other Notes - the boys who were training were again the younger cohort rather than the full team training. Spotted LJ and Sculls, also clearly identified Tom Macnamara running around and looking very fit. I guess the dees are planning to re-rookie or maybe now that Bruce has left, will consider re-drafting...either way he's still training with the club.

Sorry, hopefully someone else can help out with more info.

Cheers

photos are up on facebook.

im only going from those 14 so grains of salt needed.

trengove looks big.

jones looks fit

watts has muscle definition... hard to tell how big he is though.

newton, for a guy who must surely be on his last chance, looks like the german kid from the simpsons. "dont make me run, im full of chocolate"

hard to tell from photos though.

Newton does look a bit like that from the photos, but he also looks like he's bulked up with some muscle as well. So if he's going to be fit by the end of preseason its probably better he came back strong with some padding than thin.

The team certainly looks a bit of a weird bunch, we certainly can't be accused of being crowbots.

What I like about those photos is that Scully, Trengove and even Bail are leading the packs. Also Maric is always up near the front in the photos (I know, they are only photos) but it looks like he is working hard to earn his spot. Even having Sylvia there up and going is great to see.

I think you will find that with PJ amd Meese gone Newton is being looked at for the ruck, hence the bulk......only time will tell.....I spoke to him at the end of the season and said he would take a rookie contract in a flash if offered and he actually quite enjoyed the rucking.....

in regards to maric, i know that he has just recovered from the minor stages of op, so he is probably relishing the running, hopefully a full pre season can put him in contention for a spot in our forward line.

bail and trengove both look massive, and newton does look a bit bigger, but probably a changed diet by the demons staff to try and get him to put on a few extra kilos over summer

fitzpatrick still looks 3 years off an afl game, looks like he would be snapped in half by a defender, ruckman, or a mid fielder..

wonna and jones also look in top notch condition.

jurrah looks to be struggling, hopefully his cardio can improve so he can give a really good four quarter effort, i remember last year, in his pre season games before he did his shoulder he was cramping up so hopefully he can get his cardio up

Good to see Blease getting out on the park too.

Wona to me looks a little tubby still - I know that's his genetics, but at the beginning of 2009 he looked cut.

Trengove looks like he'll be Moloney-size before we know it.

Scully filling out nicely too.

Very happy to see Maric at the head of the group in the runs.

Building his engine will be very important for his game & I feel like he is just a late bloomer.

Those were exactly my thoughts. He looks huge, and not in a good way.

Good to see Wonaeamirri doesn't look like the side of a barn. In fact looks really defined.

Will be big for him to have half a season and a full pre season under his belt.

It's a pretty healthy list at the moment, looks like a majority of the boys might get a full pre season in. touch wood.

I was there for about 20 min. From what I noticed Watts looked like a skinny kid still (which he Is). Blease has put on some size and LJ needs to improve his engine. He struggles with the longer distance running. Was a good vibe tho, all the boys were up and about.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
