Stynes jumper has already been iced for two years. Since then Jolly, Simmonds and PJ have worn it.

FWIW, when Bucks retired from Collingwood his jumper number was passed immediately on.

The same happened with James Hird's number.

Both outstanding greats of their Club and game and both thought the idea of icing their number was unnecessary.

Lets hope the Club focusses on the important stuff and not the trivialities that appear in media releases that some poster feel is "important" for a football Club

Well done you have completely missed the point.

For someone who bangs on about the importance of tradition at football clubs, I would have thought the situation of Hird and Buckley was pertinent to show it isn't at two traditional Melbourne based club. Sorry for the logic.

And if you actually took the time to follow the thread of the argument I actually agreed with the poster that Jake Spencer should get jumper 11. So go re read before you pump yout tyres

Surely it means far too much to just hand it on to someone hopeful or unproven.

Put it on ice for a year or two, or however long it takes for someone, probably a ruckman, to EARN it.

Numbers mean nothing. You are given a number when you come to the club, and you make your own history in it. I hate it when we give a new kid a number for the specific reason of either honouring a past player who wore it or drawing a comparison between a new player and an old one.

Someone will be drafted, be it this year, or in a future year, and they will get the number 11. They don't have to be a ruckman. They just have to be on our list.

On topic of who should get number 11, I believe it should stay with the ruckman but should stay on ice until one of Spencer, Gawn or Fitzy stand up and prove who deserves to wear one of clubs great if not the greatest people to pull on the red & blue jumper. Number 11 needs to be earned!

Dratees need to be given high numbers unless your a first rounder!

Eg. Scully 31, Trengove 9, Watts 4, Grimes 14.

Jumpers 31 Barassi, 4 Norm Smith, 2 Flower, 9 Neitz and Jimmy's 11 hold great significance to the MFC. I am sure there are others. But these stand out too me. I could add 3 & 12 to an extent.

A Jack Viney would look great in the No. 11! Could we ice it till then?

Since Stynes played the No 11 has been worn by Simmonds before he left to go to Freo, two years by a raw and inepxerienced Jolly who had threatened to walk out of the Club after throwing a sook. For the last 5 years its been worn by ruckman that has chronically underperformed and has been cut by the FD. Hardly a tradition or history of respecting the number.

I am not sure why Spencer, Gaen, Fitzy need to stand up and prove anything. The other three players did not do the number justice. So can we spare the pretence of icing it on the basis of a player deserving it?

Lets just award the number and let a player make his own mark in it.

And before the creationists came along and re wrote the history of the Number 11 guernsey, Laurie Mithen and Greg Wells did the number proud and they weren't rucks.

I am sure Jim Stynes would not stand on the pomp and ceremony others are playing on. I am sure he would realise the silliness of icing his number given the time that has passed and that MFC look forward to a great future.

After just reading whos been delisted from the club it got me thinking that now PJ is gone Jimmys famous number 11 is now up for grabs, who does every reckon deserves to where Jimmy jumper??? would of personally love to see LJ change from 48 to 11 but robbo got in first i guess...
