Took a little while to get used to the new structures after coming from the Lions. Showed composure and hardness in the backline and was a solid contributor for much of the season - Luke Holmesby melbournefc

A good ordinary footballer who shocked me with some red hot form in the second half of the season.

He showed some real fight.

I had him gone by the end of 2011, but I now think I may have got that one wrong.

Posted

I was impressed by him in the Round 2 game against the pies and have had him in my best 22 ever since, so I would like to say that I was on the Macdonald bandwagon very early. I like the cut of his jib, and can see him in our back-line for a few years yet.

I think that as we improve he's ideally not in our best team, but he's got some good attributes - he takes the game on and judges the ball in the air pretty well.

That said, I quite like his effort and he's handy depth at worst.

A useful contributor, scored for free in the PSD; can't be too unhappy about that.

Don't know that he'll be able to hold his spot forever as the side develops, but I'm more than happy to have him in it right now.

An amazing ability to win one out battles. Every time he is running back for the ball or chasing it up against one other opposition - I will back Joel all the way

Round 2 aside, where he did brilliantly on Cloke, his best footy was in the second half of the year. Loved his run and carry, and his hardness at the contest.

As has been said, he's no certainty to be in our premiership winning side but he's definitely best 22 material at the moment.

I was unsure at the start of the year, but he was a handy player.

Considering we have Garland, River and Frawley are all 192cm+, MacDonald provided a really great strong bodied mid-sized option and ended up taking Warnock's spot in the side bc we would be slightly too top-heavy if we had 4 192cm+ players.

I also agree that I love the fact he almost almost wins one-on-one contests.

I used to hate how regularly we used to concede goals from strong contested marks from opposition forwards when the ball was bombed in. Now, with Frawley, Garland, Rivers and MacDonald, we almost always get a spoil in and make the ball hit the ground.

He had me won when that fevola was walking down to full forward and looked at Joel, and said "looks like another plasma screen coming up for me" Joel quick as a flash said back "at least I have a house to put one in".

Apart from that his decision making impressed me, but at times i think he got caught out with his speed,

all in all not a bad debut season!

Just a good ordinary player for mine. Plays well when we win & poorly when we get hammered. Disposal is suspect under pressure. We wouldn't have lost much by putting games into Cheney. Should have used the pick to secure Jack Grimes' brother who went to Richmond.

Proved to be an excellent pick-up as the season went by. At the start of the year, I thought we had recruited him for a his experience and a bit depth, but by season's end I think he offered more than that. Like other posters, I really valued his courage under fire and his one-on-one contested work.

Agree fully. Had my doubts early in the season but now that he's settled he will be a regular in our best 22.

Not surprised to see himdo well . Thought his ethics and application top notch . His maturity brings poise and robustness to our back 50 . Some of the others coming through may eventually displace him but he'll keep everyone honest in those endeavours. The price was right and he delivers to boot (npi) Well done Joel .. a top Dee :)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
