Pretty simple, who do you think will be the next captain of the MFC?

I don't think any of our young brigade are ready (scully, trennerz, grimes, watts, frawley etc)...Which means the obvious choice would be someone out of the more experienced players. The obvious options are Bruce, Green and Moloney. I would go with Beemer...he absolutely loves the club, and I just love the way he goes about it. Also he is a bit younger than the other two. I would think Green would be ahead of Bruce.

do you not think Davey would be a strong candiate?

Between Beamer, Bruce and Green... but watch out for grimes, McCardy loves him and think there is no reason a young bloke can't be captain. I know the board doesn't appoint the person but he is really rated.

Green undoubtedly.

Beemer and Davey have plenty of years left. Green is approaching veteran status and he deserves it for his courage, on field leadership and dedication to the Dees.

I reckon Green should be captain. He leads by example on the field. Otherwise, Moloney will get it.

I'm a fan of Beamer & would be happy If he got the Nod. However I'm now considering Greeny as well, because he's married & settled with kids & possibly a slightly more mature media player. Good onfield as well.

Beamer is outstanding I think onfield as long as he doesn't get sucked in. He has passion onfield which is great as long as he can keep it controlled, is a great role model.

Greeny as an onfield role model I find is too staid, conservastive, not the way I want the kids to follow, the subtleties are as important as winning the momentum back or going defensive.

I think its a 50/50

I don't want Bruce to skip, time to move forward. How far forward we'll see.

My vote's with Moloney. Absolutely bleeds Red & Blue, and is a true leader, both on and off the field.

Green would be my second pick but, while he's a class act on the field, I'm not so sure he's quite the leader of men that Moloney has developed into.

But, at the end of the day, I'm sure whoever eventually gets the nod will do a fine job.

If they go with Green it opens the door for Grimes to be a deputy and possibly pinch the job in 2 or 3 years. If Beamer of Davey get the nod he would likely have to wait a long time for a chance. Moloney seems the obvious choice but I reckon Grimes would be an inspired left field selection.

Considering our position on the premiership clock a long term leader is probably a good idea, but I tend to think with the heart so I'd like Green to get the gig.

Regarding the process I think the players have a major say in the captain and the leadership group for that matter. If it is a popularity contest between the players Davey or Moloney would likley be standouts.

Personally:

Captain - B Green

Vice Captains - B Moloney, A Davey, J Grimes

I would choose Green, but I'm certain it will be Bruce (provided he is still at the club...)

I'm surprised Davey isn't getting more support here. He's been our best player for years now and is unnerringly brave and committed. In terms of dealing with the extra attention, well, he's the first tagged every week and he's used to the responsibility of being the best player. Plus, it wouldn't nice to have a member of the world's oldest people as the captain of the world's oldest football club.

I think Moloney will be chosen, but in my opinion it has to be Brad Green.

1. He is arguably our best player.

2. He has courage.

3. He kicks game winning captains goals.

4. He will have 200+ games of experience as a captain.

5. He already does alot with the media.

6. He is probably our most respected player in AFL circles.

7. When we were at our very worst, he was offered more money to go to other clubs with the chance of winning a premiership. Which in all honesty we all would have understood a 28 year old leaving the worst side in the comp for a top 4 team with more money and a chance to win a premiership. Yet he turned that down because he wanted to be a Demon for life. So my seventh reason is that he is loyal to the end.

All of course is just my opinion.

Before this season I would not have said Green as he's never been as popular with the players. Wasn't it only last year (maybe the year before) he wasn't in the leadership group? (voted on by the players). However, this year you just get a sense that his standing amongst the group has grown with his output on the field so I would not be surprised if he was named captain next year.

In saying that, my preference would be for Beamer. When you hear the young blokes talk about who has influenced them around the place you always hear his name (along with Jones and McDonald), he took the initiative too start the boxing camp which has now become a regular fixture, he's a Demon through and through which goes well with where the club is at with reconnecting and re-establishing it's identity, and on top of all that he's a very strong leader through both verbal direction and physical example.

I just think that along with our youth focus and long term outlook we would be better off with a captain who'll be around for 4-5 years rather than another 2 years max like Bruce or Green, feels more settled that way.

I would think next year it would be something like:

Captain: Moloney

Vice Captains: Davey, Green, Bruce

Leadership group: Grimes, Frawley, Rivers, Jones

HA!

Brad Green. End of discussion. :)

As an outsider I view Green as the best current option for the next couple of years at least. Moloney sounds like he has a lot of currency around the club though so I wouldn't be surprised if he got it.

Points 1 and 3 are debatable.

There are definitely better players at MFC and in 106 games Beamer has kicked 25.35. Hardly dangerous around the goals.

Think you got confused RR.

I was talking about Brad Green.

As in, I think Moloney will be chosen but I want it to be Green and here is why....

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
