This is by far the worst thread ever, no point to it, offcourse we want the boys to make the finals it would be a great reward for them and as we all know 'anything can happen in the finals' its a complete different game. They are footballers not racehorses. Racehorses only have X amount of starts per career and maybe 10-15 races where they are primed, Footballers have several years where they can be in their prime, finals experience is huge and a smashing in the first week of the finals in my eyes is much better then winning round 22 and missing the 8.

I'd rather not use flaky clubs like Carlton and Essendon as the reason to do anything. Also failing to see what storming home for 9th did for Richmond a few years ago.

The tank mentality runs deep at this club..

A lot of supporters seem overly excited to make the finals. Being an 'also ran' finalist gives me no jollies.

In time, when we're a genuine contender, playing finals will be extremely fulfilling. Conversely, limping in - even taking into account the experience gained for the young players - doesn't do a lot for me.

That said, it would be one more step in that long journey that hopefully culminates in the only thing that matters, a flag.

H, do you not think being an also-ran in this years finals would quicken our development into a true contender, moreso than just missing finals?

I don't think it would make any difference.

If anything, for the players there might not be that same level of excitement for the next time. A feeling of "been there before"...whether or not that would steel themselves more next time or play "calmer" (if there is such a thing for a final)...who knows. I figure those who have had this experience would know.

There's actually a few things to consider re: sleeping with Hawko - wife, kids, girlfriend. Nothing to consider with finals

Now I'm confused and losing sight of what is most important over the next month, the Dees making finals or bedding Jen Hawkins!

Ah bugger it, she is great but, GO DEMONS!

It is an interesting consideration.

You're right that any of us, having not experienced it, have no idea and are only theorizing.

Personally, I think the experience would further our development.

I recall against Brisbane, Wayne Brittain commentating didn't specifically talk about making finals, but he did say that it would be important for us to win a handful of games at the end of the season so we could carry that momentum through to the start of next year.

He seemed to think ending the season on a string of losses would slow us down.

I understand there is a train of thought that our players may get ahead of themselves if we make the finals.

I think that may be true of supporters, but I don't think it's likely of our group considering the hard work it has taken to get where we are now.

I think if there's one thing our team is NOT, it is a bunch of downhill skiers.

Bring on the finals.

Where confidence is concerned it makes a big difference and I think playing finals would help with our confidence as a group.

The examples of Carlton and Essendon don't worry me, because I don't think they were good enough to deserve to be there in the first place.

They haven't gone backwards, they've just performed roughly the same and luck may determine their fate.

We're not necessarily deserving of a finals place either, but I can see where the improvement will come from in our group & I'm not worried of any adverse effect.

If MFC do not want to play finals, the players and coaches should look for new jobs on Monday.

Well said, imagine if i said to my Dad "I don't want Melbourne to make the finals this year, so we ensure we do it better next year" My Dad is 75 and i am sure he wants to see as many finals as he can before he goes upstairs, as do i.

Those who prefer a ladder finish of 9th deep down are scared of success & the spotlight.

Not at all and thats a big assumption.

Baileys goal for this year was to win at least half as many more games than last. it was to introduce the players that will make the great asulat It was to get these players to play together as many games as possible. To get games into legs and blood a few more. His goal this year was not to play finals bit evenhe acknowledges that if you finish 8th you will..as do I . But is that the goal ? No.

So some would rather stack the team irregardless for the last so-many games in order to fall over the line ( stil highly unlikely btw ) inpreference to conditioning and preparing a wider selection of players...some of which WILL go on to play finals successfully.

Some of you are just so starved of any success that you'll take any crumb that falls your way rather than the patience to take the cake.

Forrest...trees etc

Incorrect. He actually had not made playing finals one of his goals this year rather stating he did not want to play finals.

What do you mean stack the team given we are playing so many young inexperienced players and in recent weeks have had leaders in Junior and Beamer? Any chance we might be teaching those selected in games to win football matches? Think about it.

Forrest...trees etc

We won't make it so the argument is mute.

We have a mountain of work to do to even be in the frame for finals. As Jimmy aluded to the other night.

The last 4 games should be the final stepping stones before an all out assault next year on the pre-season and then finals (ie winning half as many games again on top of this year, meaning 12 or more meaning we make the finals).

Your decision is admirable DJ. Still don't think i could pass on Jen.

And yes the 17 seconds would include clothes removal!

You must be getting concerned now BB, we are still in the Finals race. Oh Dear whatever shall we do??

You talk of DB getting games into the kids this year...If we play Finals-guess what...It's an extra game!!

Sponsors get another week of exposure, and the Footy Department learn more in one week than half a season of H & A games.

9th is the Twilight zone-You get nothing..Your theory is more Flawed than the Bible seriously.

Will you go to the Finals if we play one in melbourne?? Or sulk all over summer because we got "To Much Exposure".

September rocks mate-maybe you have forgotten.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
