Interesting that only a few days ago there were calls for him to be not only dropped but delisted :S People need to open their eyes. He had elite disposal today and provides much need height and bulk around the contests. He kicks long and is very aggressive. 2 year contract minimum.

A few days ago? Maybe a few weeks ago, he's been good to very good the past few games. Still not 100% convinced he'll be in our best 22 for a premiership tilt, however on recent form he will definitely be resigned.

No bad words from me. I'm on record wondering why he was dropped in the first place.

Was the pass to Bennell "elite" disposal?

:D Just stirring. He was good today. Interestingly, people are saying he beat Watson. Watson had it 32 times?

there was actually nothing wrong with it. Not Dunn's fault that Bennell needed 2 buckets to pick up the ball. Dunn had 19 kicks, watson had many ineffective handballs in those 32 touches. plus, Dunn kicked a goal.

Most of Watson's possessions were cheap handball chains. He had almost no influence.

Full credit to Dunn. Needed to improve this year and he has. Has shown he can tag or play as a defensive forward very effectively. Watson is Essendon's best player. That Dunn broke even with him on the day was a huge win for us.

Watson would be in the first 3 picked and Dunn in the last 5 IMO. Watson might have had it 33 times but Dunn had it 20 odd. I reckon that is a break even considering how each damaged the other team which means a win for the MFC. He didn't beat him but he made sure he wasn't a play maker.

As usual, no one had him for delisting. Just another Freak fantasy.

His disposal and decision making are too often questionable and at 192 cm he is neither tall nor small. He is not a strong marking and not overtly phyisical at the contest.

He wont be delisted at year end. He is likely to be offered a 2 yr contract at a middling contractual amount.

It was another Dunn brain fade. Dunn should have kicked the goal. Its telling that Bennell need 2 buckets to pick the ball up such was the sloppy pass.

BTW, Watson also kicked a goal too. At best Dunn nullified Watsons influence. However Dunn just does not hurt oppositions when he has the ball.

And in his sixth year still has not nailed a spot in the team as his own. With the number of talented young players coming through in MFC's side in the coming years, Dunn will continue to plug gaps.

I was not convinced about Dunn at the beginning of the year and thought he needed to improve to avoid a delisting, but he's found a niche (defensively-minded forward) and is filling it with aplomb. Continue to get better, Lynden, and I'll admit that I was wrong ... but you're not quite there yet.

Posted

He showed something early in the year, and was very stiff to have been dropped in the first place.

His versatility is going to be super important, and he shouldn't be going anywhere!

With his attitude and attack on the ball, I'd reather him stay in the team at the expense of Morton at the minute!

 Now, what was that about Petterd definitely going to GC ?

He had elite disposal today and provides much need height and bulk around the contests.

Thank god he is at 192cm then.

Phew !

This post just shows how Statistics are crap in solely valuing performance.

How good was his pass to Bate at the end of the 3rd? Beckoned Bate to run into space and then delivered a perfect 55m kick to advantage. This set up Green's 4th and most important goal on the 3qtr time siren.

arent Stats funny things ?? lol.. alot of junk in amongst there. Watson had little impact really in the overall scheme of things. Might have with more help ..but hey !! Dunn did a good job... Not brilliant, not average..but good.

When he does that day in day out.. lets revisit the negotiating table...and that goes for a few of his mates too !!

Loved it. Coast to coast.

This would have been a fair thread at half time. However I think Dunn forgot he was meant to be tagging Watson after half time. And dont get me started on that lairising rubbish to bennell in the last.

Posted

Agree he needs to keep showing improvement but he is playing his role well at the moment and nullifying the influences of some of the oppositions bets playmakers (Shaw, Gilbert, Watson).

Posted

Dunn's first half was outstanding for what he did himself and for what he denied Watson the opportunity to do.

He fell away a fair bit during the second half but when the heat was on he was good.

He should have handballed it or kicked the goal himself instead of trying to look fancy by doing a little snap pass when they thought they had the game won.

The responses here typify the sort of stuff Dunn has to contend with. Dunn was more than good yesterday. Some of his 19 kicks were 50m+ goal assists. He had 0 clangers (one of only 2 demon players that didn't notch up a clanger). He also had 19 kicks compared to watson's 10.

On that game alone, he will be safe to playout the rest of the year. Give opportunities to the right people and they will reward you.

Posted

He was good and needs to continue to be good. I thought we were past using him in midfield tagging roles but he played well on Watson. He actually had much the better in the first half. I think we had 10 contested marks to half time which is nearly our yearly total! Dunn took 4-5 of these. Watson started to get more in the 2nd half but wasn't too effective.

A good week for Dunn. He needs to continue this as our midfield options will outweigh what Dunn can deliver. He has shown he can play a defensive role fairly well in the forward line and again, will have to continue to play well as next year guys like Petterd will play this role and would play it better IMO. This is not to mention others such as Bail, Morton, Wonna, Jetta who are still on the edge right now this year and will keep the pressure on him.

Like Dunn and his work rate but he will need to deliver week in week out to stay in the 22....this is a reality I think most would see.

Am recalling a couple of things I noticed about Dunn's game. One was the time he directed traffic pretty much up the entire ground. Then went right up the side of the centre square, 2 kicks, coast to coast goal instigated and led by him. Impressive in anyone's book. The second thing I noticed... When was the last time you saw Dunn "hear footsteps?" Granted, he's only played some of this season, but I can't remember the last time he looked like he might have squibbed. What's more I reckon he might have had something like 3 contested marks in that first quarter, all of which were solid, one-grabbers... oozing class. Now if we can just get him doing that forward.

there was actually nothing wrong with it. Not Dunn's fault that Bennell needed 2 buckets to pick up the ball. Dunn had 19 kicks, watson had many ineffective handballs in those 32 touches. plus, Dunn kicked a goal.

There was something wrong with it. He should have handballed. But I'll give you that one since you're right, Bennell should have played the percentages and just kept the ball in front of himself by hook or by crook. I reckon that's just a bit of rush of blood to the head though. Were it Green he would have just paddled it and waited for it to bob up, but Green has had the benefit of 200+ games.

This post just shows how Statistics are crap in solely valuing performance.

Nope. Wrong again. Statistics CAN be misleading. But they're not "crap." Ask bombers fans and they'll say Watson was pretty good. Ask demons fans and they'll say Dunn got more kicks and therefore was better...

My point (which was, as usual, completely overlooked) was, if Dunn was running with Watson (a big if), and Watson got on the end of it 32 times, then it can hardly be called a win, can it? Besides, I wouldn't call Watson's game ineffective. What I would say, is that when the game was there to be won in the first half, Dunn was bating him comfortably.

The responses here typify the sort of stuff Dunn has to contend with. Dunn was more than good yesterday.

Hmm. Probably fair. I might have sounded like I was giving him a hard time, which I'll take responsibility for, but I liked his game yesterday. He played on their only good midfielder. If you could cal Watson that... and had a very clean, confident game.

Am I alone though, in wanting more out of a 192cm player than just a tagger? Don't get me wrong, players like Ling/Clint Jones are almost a desperately needed ingredient these days... It just seems to me it's a bit of a waste of height.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
