Yes both teams were playing at 100% intensity. The Geelong win goes to prove my point rather than the opposite.

If you watched the game and you know your footy you would know this.

They played a tough game and would have beaten most if not all other sides today.

I watched the game and like to think I know my footy. But I think St Kilda in top gear would have had us out of the game at half time given some of our disposals. Montagna and Goddard were superb, it's true.

Every haphazard handball that puts one of our stationary players under pressure is a howler at the moment.

That raises another question - if the play is nearby, then why are there players stationary in the vicinity? I think if you're not working to get the ball then you should be working to protect the ball carrier. Can't see how you could be doing either if you're standing on the spot scratching your arse.

The reactions on this thread are a disgrace and frankly embarrassing.

For god's sake we played a team likely to play off in a GF (and hopefully lose ), and were a man down for the entire second half. Why is everyone shocked that lost?

I think given the circumstances, a 6 goal defeat is about right. We are definitely a 6 goal worse side than St Kilda right now.

Yep. It wasn't the worse game we have played this year by a long way. I only really saw three negatives:

1/ We didn't run out the game. Good effort for 3Q's against a superior team but we stopped in the last. Not good enough.

2/ Spencer. I'm happy to give him time to develop at Casey but I don't want to see him in the firsts unless his skills improve waaaaaaay out of sight.

3/ Nobody put Milne on a stretcher. Waste of a good opportunity for our club to brand ourselves as good citizens.

I'd argue that after halftime we were 2 players short; usually we have a player capable of joining our mid rotations, in place of Spencer.

We were a man down... and what a man too, so no wonder we ran out of legs and stopped in the last.

Grimes out of the midfield, plus two ruckman plus Bennell and Cheney who didn't play at all last week (and it showed with Cheney, as he was cramping in the last), so we were never going to win the last quarter.

On your second point, I thought Spencer did some good things. His ruck work is good, but obviously his skills are lacking. It's amazing how he'll take a good mark and throw off a good handball one minute, then trip over his own feet the next. There is merit in giving Jamar support in the ruck, and Spencer is clearly the best option we have right now until Martin is fit. For mine though, Spencer shows more than Jamar did at this stage of his career, so I'm happy to keep watching him stuff up for now.

As for point number three, Milne is a dog, and St Kilda are a loser club who have nothing to show for their 100 years in the game. May their win-less history continue for a long long time. Chippa did a great job on him, and showed him up for the selfish [censored] that he is.

Sanity prevails.

I know its cliche but.... it`s school holidays isn`t it??

Yep cause AFL players never try.....

Couldn't just be because we were against a top 2 side could it? Not possible that the Saints just proved to be a better team?

This is pathetic next I'll hear that old line "so and so don't bleed red and blue".

Spot on 32. The comments of some around here truely demonstrate their ignorance about the game, and where the Melbourne Footy team is currently at in this competition. We are all disappionted that we didn't give a yelp in the last, but geez .....

Happy with the young guys. Trengove was good. Watts was good aside from a couple of really bad kicks. McKenzie was good. Scully was apparently tagged/beaten up out of the game. There are some issues to work on with a few of our guys, but overall we saw some real positives today.

As an aside, one of the commentators on Fox said that Skull lost 3kg when he had his wisdom teeth out during the break.

Some people live on taking the negatives out of our side...come on, our three best players today IMO are in their first/second year at the club (Trengove, Watts, McKenzie) and we won the clearances against an elite midfield that sits second on the ladder at their home ground.

And we weren't out of the game at quarter time. In fact, had Dunn not failed as a forward and kicked the easiest shot on goal ever, we would have WON A FIRST QUARTER!

Why are we beating up on the team this week I'm not sure. Last week we were pathetic and an utter disgrace to the jumper, this week we tried our best and just simply were outplayed by a better side who had a full bench for the entire game.

Mind you, we have got to learn to play against team who play that rubbish defensive zone.

We weren't out of the game at three quarter time either. We competed with a premiership contender (besides Collingwood) for three quarters. That's good enough for me.

We weren't going to win today. Some people just aren't taking that in.

We still do not work anywhere near hard enough off the ball to make position.

I don't think we know how to play against teams that play a rolling defensive zone.

We are told to always look inwards and play through the corridor, but when we come up against teams that block the corridor, we lose ourselves.

The kick-outs today were terrible because of that as well, but then St Kilda spent a lot of time going backwards as well, especially as the game wore on and we figured out how to men them up. Although in the last we obviously rolled the diced to try and pull off a victory, and it didn't work. Had we had a full midfield rotation, we may have been able to run them off their feet a bit, because they aren't particularly quick through the middle.

Fair dinkum some of you little girls need to take a deep breath.

We weren't that bad. Forgettable game, sure, but nothing out there was Bailey's fault.

There were a few guys who played shockers, which you'll always get, and a few who played really well.

St. Kilda are just better at football than we are. They're also better at football than 14 other teams.

Get over it you sad, little children.

Knowing his professionalism - most teens eat ice cream and drink milkshakes their whole recovery from wisdom teeth. Scully however, probably only sucked on ice blocks!

If you punch the ball out on the full from a ruck contest, it is a free kick to the opposition.

He punched it through the goals in a ruck contest with ten players around. What rule says that is a free kick?

Link to comment

But it wasn't out on the full. It was through the goals. Also, this is exactly what Trengove did against PA in Darwin. How was it a point then and a free today?

There is a difference, that punch scored for us. I agree though it was a terrible decision. Imagine that in a close grand final, someone would be up for assaulting the umpire.

But why don't we know?? These Guys train Daily now-Have team Meetings, everything is viewed on laptop over & over, so why do they not know?

Is it our teaching Staff?

I was always taught that ignorance is no excuse. So i wonder how long we can use those types of answers?

Maybe its time to actually learn rather than hide-Head down in the study & Learn....Just an idea.

Because 80% of our team hasn't cracked 50 games yet, and are trying to get their head around playing AFL, and the other 20% are senior players who are unreliable and/or untalented.

Now you've got your answer, you can move on from blaming the coaching staff for everything.

2 coaches have now failed to extract consistency out of the same senior players, so I know who I'm blaming.

I am not blaming anyone, i merely asked a question.

If you have a group of kids with less than 50 games in them this is the perfect time to Get the Fundamentals of the Game into them.

And i consider a rolling defensive zone a modern Fundamental-so if the team doesn't know how to play that style, which has been around for over 3 years

something is lacking....

And you clearly also expect them to have perfected the art of playing against a rolling zone, in spite of their inexperience.

A side can carry maybe 1 or 2 young players, but he majority of our team is made up of kids-- why is that so hard for you to see??

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
