Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

What is Petterd worth?

Recommended Posts

I have it on good authority that Petterd is off to the Gold Coast next season. Now, the AFL has just released information that clubs will be compensated in the following manner:

Elite Player: 2 first round draft picks

2nd Category: 1st round draft pick

3rd Category: Selection at the end of round 1

4th Category: Round 2 Selection

5th Category: Round 3 Selection

The question is, what category does Petterd fall into? The thing is, Petterd hasn't been able to show his full worth due to injury. But I would love it if he managed to slip into the 2nd Category although I think that to be honest, he is probably more a category 3 player given he has been injured all year.

Thoughts?

Ill start off by saying that I really hope he stays, but who knows what will happen.

I have heard that things taken into consideration include what pick they were drafted, how they have fared in club and fairest etc. Given he was a relatively late pick and hasn't been able to string whole seasons together due to injury, things wouldn't look good on that front. I would say he might slip into the 3rd category, but after seeing what he is capable of early in the season, the club has every right to think he belongs in the 2nd category.

The question you need to ask is not what the player is worth, but what the AFL will give for them? Petterd is worth a top 10 pick. He has repeatedly shown his ability and beaten some of the best in the game. Any team in the league would take him if he were on the trade table. Sadly, the AFL have no intention of giving real value for poached players. Given the criteria they are using, things like B&F finishes and games played, we'll be lucky to get a 3rd round pick for him.

I'm glad you finished off that post with some reality. "Petterd is worth a top 10 pick"??? You have to be joking don't you?

As you said though, we'll be lucky to get a 3rd round pick for him. Regardless of what we think of the criteria, I think the AFL would have that pretty spot on in this case. Nothing against Ricky whatsoever, I too think he is a valuable member of our team, but reality is he would struggle to fit in the top 22 in at least 70% of the Clubs in the league.

I'd be satisified if they called him a Category 4 player, I wouldn't be satisified if we lost him. The AFL will not rate players based on potential and what the Club's supporters think of him.

Edit - the last parpagraph.

Petterd was a Rnd 2 selection and has pretty much played like one.

I reckon Category 3 would be best case.

I have no hesitation in saying give it another 12 mths without injury and Rick on the potential shown would easily slot into Cat 2. But being cynical about this whole thing I reckon the AFL will debate putting Rick between Cat 4 into 3 possibly. It's not right and not my opinion on him just the feel that I get.

If he does and I really really hope he doesn't...what does the club do?

I noted that there was talk about Roughead at Hawthorn being a little off pace this year and with the Buddy factor it would be interesting to see if a trade could be struck for him if we lost Rick?? Hawthorn crying out for defenders - could we throw them a Rivers and an early pick considering that we have ample early picks on our list? Just a silly thought I know......;)

Thanks to twitter:

@emmasq Based on age, and contract offer from GC/GWS as the better reflection of their potential & worth

So it depends how much they offer him. I really hope Petterd stays though.

I for one am very concerned about Ricky but another concern is he lives with Rohan Bail. Read into what you will.

That they live together. (full-stop)

Well, according to this article:

Cats to get two if Ablett goes north

it will depend what the GC are prepared to pay.

As far as MFC are concerned, invaluable.

With his worth in the competition in general though, I don't think we'll be anywhere near happy with the compensation given, if , in fact, he has chosen to move (which, at this stage, is simply scuttlebutt.)

Huh, 2 banana benders living under the one roof? LOL... I think we can trust them, well, at least I think so.

As much as GAblett Jnr can be trusted, anyway.

You know what,,, I trust the footy dept more than any other person around our club Now. I couldn't say that over the last 20 or so years. it's a good feeling, but kind of empty, like I have less to be concerned about. I haven't even been to any U-18 games this year, but I might change that this W/End, week.

If they get 2 picks for a GAblett Jnr, when, do they get to use those picks, which draft, this year or next?

Why does everyone continually believe that the only players possible of going to the Gold Coast are QLD natives? It's ridiculous. So Rohan Bail came from QLD - since when does that mean he will leave at the end of the year? Same goes for Petterd. You have it on good authority? Yep, I'm sure you do.

Nick Rooey came from the Gold Coast and he is rumoured to be... Oh hang on - that stuffs that theory.

Anyway I have it on good authority that the GC are only chasing 192cm players.

The odds of Petterd staying are the same as Ablett staying. Ablett is definitely going and Guy McKenna along with the Gold Coast CEO recently bought a multi-million $$$ property at auction. i wonder who that is for? I have the exact address

I'd actually just started thinking he might leave so thanks for reassuring me that he's staying.

If he did go we'd get Category 4

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
