Gys will probably play before the year is out,but if he doesn't then that is ok also as he is still young and undernourished. What has happened to Fitzpatrick? Is he injured? Also,is Blease going around at the moment?

I'm looking forward to seeing Tapscott in action when he is fit as I believe he has the body development to make an immediate impact and he has one of those wonderful NRL shaped "Granite Heads".A tough looking customer for an 18 year old!

First of all I am not claiming to know a lot about Gysberts, this is just as a general question.

From the little I have seen of Tapscott (at training and YouTube) he looks the goods with his long and penetrating kicking, good hands and solid build. They are qualities that are clearly the reason why he was drafted and they are are qualities that will be valuable to Melbourne (or any team for that matter).

Again, I have seen very little of Gysberts and I'm not trying to judge him before he's played a game, but what are the qualities that he has that other players don't have that are the reason that he was drafted ahead of a player such as Lewis Jetta?

Encouraging report on Gys from the weekend:

Jordan Gysberts - Kicks 14, Handballs 7, Marks 4, Tackles 3

Jordan started on the wing, but was moved into the midfield and he became a very important player. His first hand possessions were really good, especially in the third quarter, when we put a gap in there, he was the instigator from the engine room. He had three clearances in that third quarter, and then started to use the ball well. He’ll be better for the outing - he bounced back and ended up having a good game.

While we're at it, I can't get over how lazy our 2010 recruits have been.

Haven't seen them at one club function.

I do, however, see how the onus is on the club to give them an opportunity. Pooh-pooh to the recruitment team.

I would think his height, versatility and general upside had something to do with it. And the word is he's a very smart footballer, those are the ones that usually improve all their skills. He'll be the type built for the modern game.

I would have loved Lewis Jetta, but he's already what you see is what you get, he'll improve of course, but he's icing.

Good call. Been really unimpressed with the Gawn kid too. Get a game you hack.

Sorry - ridiculous negative nonsense. Gysbert's only been with the club five minutes. Give him a go

............. and Gawn is recovering from a knee reconstruction .He's 206 cm and he's still growing.Would you be more impressed if he started shrinking?

To quote comic book guy from the simpsons, "Clearly you are unfamiliar with the word sarcasm". I think the original poster was having a laugh..

I have said this before, but now seems a good time to recount a quick story:

At the Dees Draft night event, I spoke to one of the coaching staff, and asked why they'd picked Gysberts. The response was: "He has beautiful clean hands in close contests, and will wind up being a premium midfielder".

It's notable also, that the Sydney Swans had him firmly in their sights.

Give him time gents, physical size can be attained, natural skills cannot.

I'm looking forward to watching him over the next couple of years.

At the end of the day, the top 10 draft picks were virtually predictable, therefore, BP had the opportunity to pick the best of the rest. In my opinion, he did. How can we say he didn't? He had seen a majority of the draftees, and when it came time for pick 11, they called out the Gys' name. I have faith in BP's ability, and answering the original question, YES, we did do the right thing picking him. I still say that we did the right thing picking Watts instead of Nic Nat and Rich. Only at the end of their careers will we be able to answer differently.

Also, one thing we all have to remember is that out of the last year's draft, their is only 2 potential SUPERSTARS/CHAMPIONS of the game, we got them both at 1 & 2. To expect any of the other boys we picked up to be in the same category is ludicrous. If they become very good players (those that I rate in maybe the top 40 or so of the league in the next 3-5 years), I think our recruiting has been spot on. Potential stars like Scully and Trengove aren't plentiful. I don't even call Rich a potential star - feel there isn't a huge amount of improvement in him.

Hmm...might make a seperate thread on who Melbourne's potential superstars will be, could be a very interesting topic!

Watts, Gysberts & co

Watts the rush getting them into the 22? Who will we drop to have them 2 in? THEN who will we drop to have Jurrah, Morton, Jetta & co are fit and ready to push for a 22 spot???

We all need to take a step back and just have a little patience.

Last night people were wishing Jack Watt's all the worst (again), now its Gysbert's turn. Why don't we just leave our recruits alone while they learn and develop and save judgement for a couple of more years. I have watch Gysbert's play and he has very good quick hands and appears to have great potential as a midfielder. He needs to work on his engine, but that will come with a few more pre-seasons under his belt.

lets face the facts if Watts does not kick anything less that 6 goals in his first game this season he will be torn apart from all media and forums. Gysberts will be the same, I assume no less that 30 disposals his first game will be good enough.

People are not going to hear what you are saying, people only hear what they want to hear and if it is not what they want to hear they will keep on yamming on.

That's a good report. If he keeps having games like that then I'm happy we've got a guy who can play a bit! Jordy McKenzie probably had similar reports all last year until he got a game, and he's coming along nicely after a preseason.

I think its a real boost that we have these guys who win their own ball. They all just have to keep harnessing the experience of Junior and Scotty West.

Good lord, is that 3 people who've not only failed to read my post with any sense of irony but also not process the other posters point out the others making this ludicrous error??

Just...try a little harder kids...

I like the looks of Gys. The kid i'm unsure of is tapscott. Will give him time cause of that cannon of a foot.

umm Tapscott? He is out for the season, he is yet to play AFL or VFL. How can u be unsure of a draftee that has yet to play?

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
