I noticed in a couple of recent media appearances that Matthew Pavlich has become very non committal about renewing his contract with Freo. I believe he is not entiely happy at freo. Should the situation arise where he was put on the trade table, do you think melbourne should make a play for him? What would you give up to get him?

My opinionis he's getting on in age and you'd maybe get 3 or 4 years out of him. maybe not worth giving up the next superstar of the competition for him. If i were freo i'd probs make the hard call and trade him, but what i'd want for him i don't think melbourne should give up.

Two things.

1/ Pretty sure he's contracted for at least this year and next. He's 28.

2/ Who would you trade for him? It would take a fair bit to land him.

My opinion? No, thank-you.

Having said that, I saw the way he answered the question, he's definitely leaving his options open. There is no flag for Fremantle in the next few years in my opinion, so I think he will leave and chase his dream. Maybe Adelaide?

yeah i'm pretty sure he's contracted aswell, but if he wanted out that bad i reckon he'd find a way out. freo would definately want something big for him. i would rather take a punt on Butcher.

Would love to have him but we won't get him. A forward line with him, Miller and Watts would give the opposition nightmares.

The trade offs would be too great and chances are he will be at or near the end by the our five year plan arrives at maturity.

I would suggest that if was intending to leave he will go to a club thats premiership ready.

Who wouldn't? He's one of the best players in the competition. Additionally, he's playing for a side that is an embarressment to the competition, on and off the field.

Don't know that I'd sell the farm to get him though, and landing him would require doing so if he wasn't walking. If we were pushing for a flag now I would, but as we're not, and not even close to it, I think it would only be a hinderance to our development.

A great player; I would take him.

The question is what would we have to give up? Surely Freo would be asking for plenty in compensation, and at this moment in time we would not be prepared to give up overly much.

So, yes, I would take him, but only in the PSD; and that is not likely.

Would love him.

But as said we are to far from a flag and it would be better to use the early picks on buildign a side, if we were around the top 6 sides then yeah you would move heaven and hell to get him, imagine him at the cats ..................

He is 28 and not that young.

My opinion is that he might be waiting out for the Big $$$ at Gold Coast and retire in the sun.

Why not? I know I would if I was him.

Hes almost 30.

Great player, but would cost us 700K a year. How long does he have left?

I would give it a miss, but its a tough choice.

Posted

dogs could be a force with him up forward.

otherwise he would be the perfect marquee signing for GC17, captain for 3 years, promote the game etc while they put 3 years into a developing young forward to take his spot.

If Adelaide or Port are in with a sniff of the major prize when he falls out of contract he could well be on his way out. I think the way he commented about his situation would be a concern for Freo fans.

I'm pretty certain, having seen him on Game Day on Sunday, that he isn't going to stay at Freo. And why would he? Anyone would understand him wanting to leave that basket-case to chase a flag.

But it would cost us pick 1/2/whatever our first pick is, which wouldn't be worth it considering his age and required salary. If we were a year further advanced, then maybe.

4-5 good years left in him. Worth a trade for a team like bulldogs . But definantly not dees.

True. With Aker finishing up it would free up some of the Cap.

I don't think so. What I mean is that Pavlich or no Pavlich, it will still take us a couple more years for our kids to Learn, go through the situations that we all must go through, to actually learn what To Do & what Not to do, in order to win big games.

It's would be like putting a suped up new motor in a 1992 car that hasn't had any maintenance &/or repairs, just pointless.

But if you were committed to a restoration that would be different, & very time consuming.

It's a lot quicker to buy all the parts New & fit or have them fitted within a short time frame, so they can wear together at the same rate.

Same could have been argued with carlton and ju$$. At this point you would have to say ViSy FC made the right choice?

They are slightly different to us in that they have had better draft selections 2 or 3 years ago (Murphy,Gibbs,Kreuzer) + add Judd to a powerfull midfield setup, coupled with a top line full forward - Fevola.

This on top of a reasonable, yet rudderless team just a few years back.

They're slightly more advanced in their team development than us, prob' by a couple of years.

Interesting with Carltank is there Backline which to me looks cod ordinary. They are still a way off being a force in september. I am glad that Bailey is sorting out our backline first.

But this weeks game between the Blues & Dogs i will watch closely.

Pavlich would be nice at Melbourne but i would not lose early draft pics for him considering the GC 17 project. With Miller & Watts up forward do we need another CHF? it's a gamble but i wouldn't risk it considering his age.

Feel sorry for him as he is the sole gun playing for a train wreck, but life is like that sometimes. Pav should go to the Crows or Gold Coast. Freo next year without Pav will be a magnificent Comedy!!

The big thing is that by the time we're ready to challenge for the premiership, he'll probably be retired. Not worth it IMO.

Yeah, IMO carlton are a 1Yr or 2 off a Grand Final appearance. No doubt they still have some kids on the simmer @ Coburg. Remember where Garland & Frawley came from.

I think we need to take Scully, hopefully we will still be in the position to get him, & we also need to recruit 2 or 3 Key Forward types. Out of that we hopefully will find a good one that can compliment the young Watts kid who is unproven.

Add to that 2 or 3 young ruck types to the rookie list.

I hope for Pavs & Freo's sake that they trade him by mutual agreement to the Doggies, thats best hopefull scenario. & good for footy.

He'll got to a club thats a quality top-up for a tilt at a flag. He's a Adelaide boy so that is where he is normally linked to.

If the dockers were smart and since they are rebuilding they should trade him this year for some quality picks. Its a win/win.

Not for us but for his own sanity he should ask to be traded away from the Freo.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
