Juice Newton- Criticisms, Comments and Kudos

Please Note:

As with the Sylvia thread, I have merged the other various Newton threads into this one.

Yes it makes this a massive topic to browse through, but it beats having to rename Demonland "The Michael Newton Circus".

Cheers

jaded, it makes it impossible to follow. there are 100 different conversations going on and nothing of substance (and if there is there is not a hope of finding it).

i have no idea what the solution is, but 9 threads into 1 doesn't work. i know that if i see a thread with even 100+ posts i dont read it because by the end it is drivel.

At least Michael Newton tries, He is simply not blessed with ability.

Who are you watching?!!! Juice has ability to burn. You know he took mark of the year in, like, his first few games. He can kick freaky ones like he did late last year... I won't go on. You can be sure it's his application that's the issue, not his ability.

I feel sorry for Bailey who has no option but to play this guy. I implore all Melbourne supporters to watch Matthew Bate closely for just one game and take note how much of a pretend footballer he is, This guy does not chase, Consistently finds that spot on the ground called NO MANS LAND and on numerous occasions takes short steps to avoid contact. NOT GOOD ENOUGH !!!!

WHAT?!! Bate is one of the biggest triers in the side. Up there with Bell for gut-busting running in the wrong direction.

Another Newton thread?

Dear lord.

To keep your last howler company.

And that is perhaps the most realistic post on Newton thus far.

Yup. Probably goes for about half our 22, maybe 3/4s of it on a good day.

I wish you had not done that. I was making a comparison between the efforts of Clint Bartram & Michael Newton last sunday. Now the thread is lost.

Yhankyou so much-you have obviously never been an editor.

As I said, yes it makes it hard to follow but we cannot have so many threads going on about the same subject.

It gets confusing and frankly very annoying. Posters should know better than to start new threads without so much as scrolling down the page to check if a topic is already being discussed.

Anyone who was having a conversation with someone, will be able to find it again and carry on. Otherwise, I assure you that no real substance has been lost in the merging of threads (only 2 were merged btw)

Edit: Watch and learn http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting :D

How many threads could we possibly need acknowledging that we have a player on our list who puts in zero effort and shows utter contempt for his teammates and Melbourne supporters upon taking the field? Once he's banished to the Casey seconds to play out the rest of his charitable contract we can move on and stop wasting valuable cyber space with musings on the man.

It wasn't the same Topic at all, and i don't care how many Topics are on the list-if they are there people wish to discuss them. Once a thread is over 150-200 nobody goes near it.

By Joining threads you dilute the content. As an editor i am glad to show you more examples at any time.

Well I'm not an editor, I'm a moderator, so I apologise if I ruined this Shakespearean masterpiece

Obviously we don't need to keep adding to this thread forever, but there are like 5 Michael Newton threads on the first page alone, which is so very unnecessary. I did not combine the little psychological analysis thread into this one, because it really doesn't suit, but a recent thread talking about Newton pulling his finger out did not deserve its own thread.

By the way, the content in this thread is about as dilute as it is ever going to get ;)

I left Sunday night disappointed with Newton but I now think he deserves 3-4 games more to prove himself. The reasoning behind this is ball movement into our forward line is second rate. No forward in the competion would of kick 3-4 goals for MFC on Sunday, our forward line had 6-8 crow defenders in there every time the ball went in and we had 2-3 forwards. On top of the extra defenders our midfield couldn't hit a target and we had slow ball movement into out 50m area.

OK he missed 2 goals that he should of kicked agreed but don't hang him on that. He only has only come into the side when we need a key forward tp step up and most of the time he has got the 2nd best tall defender. Let him play 3-4 games where Robbo and Miller are with him he is the third tall option, the only issue I have is the next 3-4 games are against 3 of the best teams in the comp and West Coast away, our midfield needs to get the supply to our forward line with quick decent kicks, If this happens and Newton still can't get goals then make the call.

Ball movement is the key our transfer from defense into the attacking 50 is slow and we are over using the footy. This allows teams to get numbers back and our midfielders to get easy touches in the back half. We get stuck then last resort we bomb it long to a position where we are out numbered.

We continue to attack our forwards but our midfielders are slow and besides Davey we have no one that can break the lines. We need to inject speed and skill into our midfield this area determines how well guys like Newton, Bate, Miller, Robbo and even Watts when he comes in play. If we cant get "good footy" to our forward line our forwards will be average.

He would struggle to bruise a bunch of grapes with a bump.

RR you need to watch the replay, twice in two weeks he has gone out of his way knock players on there arse to give team mates time when we had the ball, he might not be a ducks bung hole as a footballer but he is throwing himself into more contests than he used to, not saying it is enough but he is better than he was.

I am not doubting your word but that just means he must have been truly wretched before this latest renaisance!!

I don't wish the bloke any personal harm, but if I ever see him run out in the Melbourne guernsey again I will projectile vomit. The sooner he's off the list, the sooner we can all stop being frustrated by his complete lack of effort.

Please advise where you will be sitting at games that he is playing in so I can sit a couple of rows away. Ta.

Fwiw, I agree.

Some new threads should be locked or merged with an existing topic, but not all conversations - and that's what threads are - that relate to a particular topic are taking the same 'angle', so to speak.

I'd still take 4 TJ kicks a game over 95% of our rubbish at the moment.

It might take him 3 quarters to get them and they will all be easy uncontested ones. His opponent will have got 20 possessions in the meantime.

I am sure he is impressed Voss as much as he impresses you.

I have watched Newton play AFL/VFL footy for a number of years. I am not sure why you would be excited about Newton doing twice in 2 weeks whatever other unheralded hard working footballers do a dozen times a game.

Nothing to get excited about.

Miller's kicked 3 from 8 attempts, is he to be considered a capable AFL forward? Bear in mind he's had nearly 100 extra AFL games to practice his "craft".

Miller imposes himself on the contest. He runs fifty times harder than Newton. He puts his body on the line.

Newton is weak, does not impose himself on contests, gives up some chases, and doesn't run out 4 quarters.

Lets stop concentrating on how bad he is when the ball is in his hands, and talk about how terrible he is when the ball is not in his hands.

Agreed.

9 shots at goal in 2 matches is enough to be considered a capable AFL forward.

Like I said, that's half the battle.

Obviously the execution is letting him down - no one is disputing that.

It might be in your book, but it's not in mine. Especially considering how little else he does. For someone like Newton to be in the team, if he isn't to do anything of note when he doesn't have the ball, I'd be expecting many more shots on goal, and many more goals. As it stands, he needs to either up the goal/shots on goal tally considerably, or start to play proper defensive football when we don't have posession.

You get your chance after sitting out a few games, and you grab it and play your guts out......you don't stand around looking disinterested........he does not deserve a few more games he hasn't earned the right

That's exactly right. He's had plenty of time to stew over his problems at VFL level. And he's had plenty of chances, upon returning to Melbourne, to take command of a game and show that he's got what it takes. It still hasn't happened.

I'll stick my neck out and say that Newton will have kicked at least 3 goals from 12 shots by the time the 500th post is made in this thread!

Indeed. Holy Guacomole! It's not like you Rhino, to stick your neck out like that!... ;)

We'll take it on board anyway.

As I said to someone else on here you need to actually watch him when we do no have the ball in our fwd line. That is one thing he has improved on, his chasing whilst we don't have the ball.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
