Cale Morton on SEN

Cale Morton was on SEN at about 10:15am this morning. Very brief but a few interesting points. One he said when he came to the club he was 191cm and 78 kg now he is up to 82 but has grown to 193cm!! That really is huge for a midfielder! He said long term he plans to be a midfielder and is training hard to learn the inside game but needs to get more weight on his body. Hopes to get to around 86 kg as his ideal weight. Living with brother Jarryd in bentleigh.

At 19 years old there isn't much more he can do to put on weight, as he said he just needs to eat as much as he can and do plenty of weights at the gym. He's got a wonky kick on him but i'm still very confident that he'll become a star of the future Melbourne midfield.

I had to laugh at the end of the interview when Liam Pickering said, "he's got captain material written on him, very smart kid" and i'm not so much laughing him, it's more that right after evey interview i've heard with one of "Melbourne's young guns" the interviewers always state that they are captain material!

Heard the interview. Quite the well spoken young man, was good to hear his perspective on his game and size (or lack thereof). Did expect that he would have bulked up more over the preseason so was alittle disapointed there, but he is working on it, and he's only 19, so lots of time to grow into his body. He is one of the few midfielders we have with any height so lets hope he continues to progress.

Last week Cale actually called the company i worked for. I was amazed when he confirmed that he was in fact the Cale Morton from my beloved Demons... Had a good chat to him about his in Melbourne. He is living with his brother Jarayd and also his parents who relocated with them from WA as all 3 boys are in Melbourne.. I told him i didnt pick him up in my fantasy teams this years as his price sky rocketed from last year and he had a laugh and claimed he was a better pick up than his brothers....

When he puts on some weight i would like to see him play CHF and Watts FF!!!!

there's no way he can hold down a key position at 193cm, 86kg. He is only 82kg at the moment. Can't believe he has only put on 4kg in 2 pre-seasons..wtf

agree and the MFC must only have 1 dumb bell for the team to share cuz our players are the weakest in the league by far.

but at 193cm and 95 kg he could play CHF....

How is it that I can put on 4 kg in one night out, yet it takes Cale 2 years!!

Why is that such a surprise? Surely having a tall, skinny bloke fail to put on weight should be a surprise to nobody who supports this club. Remember Ryan Ferguson or Cam Hunter? Some blokes just struggle to put on much muscle. I agree that he's never going to be a KPP though. 86kg is a featherweight for a key position. That said, I doubt it's ever been expected that he'll be a KPP. I certainly have never expected that.

Keep in mind weight training isn't just a case of staking on as much as you can on the bars and grunting under the strain.

Technique and range of movement are of just as much importance to bodies that age. Most AFL players don't progress into the power zone until 22-23 years of age.

I think he can play CHF the way CHF is played these days.

I'd prefer to see him do what Richo does on a wing.

Basically play as a link from defence to the HF line, or read the play a kick ahead and get on the end of it. Richo is an artist at that.

This is counterintuitive but he will kick more goals on a wing than he would at CHF.

good call, has a similar tank to richo... i don't want to see him play as a genuine centre half forward, but he needs to be able to drift forward often and provide another target... with a little more weight on him and his height, he'll be very hard to match up on...

hes only 19, i reckon hes the next james hird, hes skillful, hes outstanding kick, and he seems to think when hes got the ball, i like the way he takes his time when hes got the ball, was hird a KPP ,no he wasnt . morton wont be a KPP .

A couple of times when Morton has shown some pretty fine close-in evasion skills, coupled with an uncanny ability to work free even when someone is supposed to be on him, his role as an attacking winger and reasonable flow of goals...

I never got to se Robbie Flower at the time, but everything I'm told and all the footage I've seen makes me think that is the style of play we should be hoping for from Morton. Except taller.

I can dream.

Rob Murphy anyone? I reckon he certainly could, it just depends how he plays the role. Besides, a true CHF role is actually a bit of an out-dated model. He can be a rangy tall forward, certainly. It's just a question of whether you want him to play the body-on-body role a la Fev and Brown, or the rangier role where he's more of a link-man.

I think he has the capability to be similar to Murphy, certainly.

one of the few kids on our list that genuinely excites me. the possibilities are endless. he wont make us a good team alone. but in a good team he could make us a very good team given his offensive prowess. would be interesting to see him at some stage down back. maybe in goddard style role. very similar sizes.

i'd like to see him spend 50% of his time in the midfield and the rest in the forward line. gives us a lot of flexibility.

ummm. u just shot urself in the foot. judd despite being several centimetres shorter is several kilograms heavier. Completely different body shapes

they need to sign him on a 3 year contract this year, future Captain although probably 6-7 years away

I spent my childhood going to the `G` and idolising Robbie Flower DD. There are many similarities between these 2 and it is not just their pencil thin arms. Flower was rarely tackled and always had time and poise as does Cale although he will get caught occasionally. The one area where I think Cale will lack compared to Robbie will be his left side. Robbie could kick , handball and even bounce the ball with his left hand just as well as his right.

The first time I saw Cale play I came home thinking we just might have our next Robbie Flower. He will be bigger than Robbie though and he is going to get far better than what we are watching now. He is still a kid and I think too many posters on here are expecting him to perform miracles way too soon.... He will though!!

Yes, Judd is several kilograms heavier now. If Morton gets up around 86 kilograms (or hightowers 89 kg) he will be fine. My point was an existing top flight midfielder isn't that much heavier (yes, lower center of gravity helps to stand up in tackles) but Morton is not far off being strong enough soon to be a class midfielder.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
