The John Meesen Appreciation Thread

Call me tragin, but I have always wanted to preempt something. Today, I predict that in John Meesens first dee game at his old home ground will be a success.

I was one of those guys that completely rode off Garland, that begged us to delist Warnock and thought that Austin was no good (predicted after his first game).

I would love this bloke to absolutely tear it up this weekend and also gather 15-20 possies around the ground, whilt containing his opponent. Big call I know, but there is nothing that can't happen in this game.

Yeah, I'll put in a tentative word of support here.

If he comes good then a major hole in our list is at least partially filled.

Certainly there's no point hoping he'll fail just because he gave us all the #$%s with what looked like a lack of intent last year.

As we saw last year with Garland and Warnock, sometimes those tall guys just all of a sudden make sense of their own bodies and it all starts working that much better.

Were going into the game with PJ and Meesen who are klnown as blokes that are handy around the ground but struggle with the hits outs. Against one of the best tap ruckamn (Lade) and the very physical and fired up Brogan! I predict that unless PJ can run forward and kick 4 we will be smashed and the ruck is the first place we will be beaten!!!!

Going by your last predictions and views, Meesen is going to have a shocker

I'm also one who hopes this bloke plays like he has been on our list for 2 years and hasn't been given an opportunity til now. No better game and better opponent to show he has a little ticker to get involved early and keep contesting even when things may not be going his or the team's way.

Logic says Brogan and co. will spook him early...interested to see how JM responds. Career defining game, but I guess that is stating the obvious.

First McInstosh, then Fraser. Opposition ruckman have had field days against us.

I am OK with Spencer being rested and I hope Meesen defies all those who have bagged him on this site.

I for one have not heard anything positive about him before last week's game but he had to be given a try. Here's hoping he gives us some presence around the ground.

I am very, very interested to see how he goes tomorrow.... I will be watching very closely from the fence.... Taken at No. 8 in 2004 by Adelaide and then never really got going.... Apparently was never happy with being picked up by an interstate side and was always homesick.....

Give 'em hell Johnno!!

Good Luck and give 100% to prove a thing or two to your legion of doubters (myself included)

It's the around the ground stuff where we have been thrashed in the last 2 weeks. The taps aren't quite as important, except this week we have Lade and Shaun Burgoyne's combination to deal with, especially close to goal. Hopefully Meese can stick with Lade and Brogan around the ground.

After seeing Big John play the last 2 weeks, I would say he is in career best form. If he can't make it now he probably never will.

That means diddly squat when your career consists of playing 2 games at one club, then getting traded to the worst club in the league, whereupon you can't get a game for an entire year.

Just a question.....have you seen Meesen play??

Meesen I am afraid, if played in the ruck, is going to receive the type of toweling, that will be spoken about for generations to come...

what to sydney, fancy keeping jamar and trading jolly, jolly would sit back and watch a demons game and laugh his ass off.

stupid statement

1) jolly wanted to go. he wanted to be number 1. he was streets behind white at that stage.

2) jamar was raw and young and overtook him in the last part of jolly's last season when white was out (cant remember what year it was). at the time he had more upside. jolly looked soft. that was vindicated in the 2006 GF.

3) sydney wouldn't have given a 1st round draft pick for jamar.

that is what really irritates me about "oh we should have kept 'person x' " posts or "imagine what we'd be like with X,Y,Z". if they wanted to leave then what the hell can the club do. apart form making sure that they cash in at the trade table.

as for the topic at hand, i'm glad he's getting a run. i want to know what he is made of and if at the end of the year we should be wasting printer ink for a new contract or not.

the challenge is yours Meesen. show us what you've got and whether we should renew your contract at seasons end.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
