Trading draft pick # 1

How about this deal: we don't swap picks, we screw Freo and get Warnock in the PSD and for once in our soft existence we don't accommodate other teams and the hell with all of them.

When was the last time another team did us a favour?

lol.. this one has appeal ...doesnt it !! :)

After the Ball ( that is the finals ) that lil of devil child Cinders is going to be one sought after person ..without doubt. And yet there is absolutely nothing , at least 'tis obvous, to gain from giving up the #1 pick. So lets see..We can have who ever we like in the draft...we can take whomever we agree to in the PSD. Im obviously a tad simple...yes..I concede it.. for Im totally blind as to any motive to dilute that position; especially without benefit to US !!

Only if Freo was in some manner able to help provide us better our pick17..would there be any reason to even entertain such silliness. I can see on the surface if things went a certain way then it really matters not to Melb whether we take Watss at 3 instead of 1..it just presumes "WE" are the chosen ones destined to have him.

Still as a wise little devil child I'd sit on the front porch with my pitcher of lemonade and politely await and listen to all suitors !!

then after...and only after would I consider any such silliness. Who knows what 11th hour mercenary plots might unhatch !!! ;)

Oh I love trade week !! lol

The problem is that the teams who are real bastards at trade time end up having trouble doing deals later on down the track. I hear that Collingwood and Essendon are two clubs many clubs won't deal with at all.

Other than that, I'm all for burning Freo on Warnock.

And I wouldn't give up the #1 pick for any deal that is likely to come up.

If this is true, West Coast must be leaning towards NikNat.

Currently, I see danger written all over NikNat and Watts. Both could be superstars. Both could not.

I don't think any of the top 3 are neccessarily better than the other; they are all totally different players.

I'd do the swap; would also take the pressure off Watts being the no1 pick if he falls to us @ 3

Hope Hutchy is right.

Also, I don't understand why people want to waste our PSD pick on Warnock when we can get him using other means, and leave it for another uncontracted star, who we probably can't trade for. Am I missing something? Help me out!

Who is another uncontracted player we would be after that fits into our age frame?

You are right Nasher. Bastardry at the trade table only screws you in the long run. While I also like the idea of scorching Freo for Warnock, I would prefer we approach this in good faith.

There is nothing wrong with NOT trading our first pick or swapping picks, to get Warnock. I'm sorry but either we give Freo a late pick, or we get him in the PSD. There isn't a team in the AFL who wouldn't do the same if they were in our position... except for maybe Freo... and that's why they are a joke of a football club.

We are hardly asking for Pavlich for pick 90 here.

I also think you'll find that Essendon and Collingwood don't do many trades because they ask for too much for their players. Essendon didn't accept a late 30 pick for Kepler Bradley FFS! :D

The problem with that is you eliminate the real use of the PSD pick 1 which is as a bargaining tool. In addition you set yourself up as a target for revenge raids in the future.

In my opinion we have a real chance here to get 2-3 players with this pick. The first two are deals done using the threat of the pick, thereby securing a favourable deal and the third is by actually using it to select at PSD time the best available player. Not to do this would be a total waste of having the pick. A bloody minded attitude of just getting Warnock for nothing would be self defeating.

How much better would our side be with three new players who are worthy of being in our best 22 than only one?

We should threaten WCE with this deal and then swap picks with them for a sweetener. They secure Rich and we get Watts at 2 with a little something on the side.

But deals like these never happen, clubs don't trust other clubs to do what they say they are going to do.

Now Red..im just trying to fathom this out..ok ..lol

I actually thoughthte REAL use of a PSD pick was...to pick someone up ..disenchanted or otherwise out of contract in the PSD ??

You say this..but how ?? How does this threat manifest and then materialise as another player ?..nice..but ??

and the third is by actually using it to select at PSD time the best available player. Not to do this would be a total waste of having the pick. A bloody minded attitude of just getting Warnock for nothing would be self defeating.

Ahh so we do use the PSD as...as a PSD selection...sneaky that

Copperfield and Angel ought be mighty impressed..we take two picks and get three !! I must be missing something ( thisis often said by the way !!lol )

Love to know how we have and eat this cake. I continually only manage 2 players from two picks.. Good job Im not in charge of this ;)

How does the third come about ??.. who's threatening whom..whlst still being pally pally..after all dont want to upset anyone..

No one is burning anyone by playing hard ball.. thats what this is all about folks.. bluff..counterplay and hardball.

Who honestly cares if we upset a few people by being crafty and getting players that help us win a premiership.. we care about OTHER clubs .,...that much???

This is all about US..........not THEM

Simple.

If you have pick 1 in the PSD then you approach an out of contract player, offer them a juicy deal and they decide to come across. You tell their previous club that you have the PSD but will offer them something in return as a show of goodwill etc and then pick up Warnock for pick 35, which is well under his value.

Then you approach uncontracted player number 2, offer him a juicy deal and he comes across to your side. You tell their previous club that you have the PSD but will offer them something in return as a show of goodwill etc and then pick up say David Mundy for and pick 51, which is well under his value.

Then you approach uncontracted player number 3, offer him a juicy deal and he comes across to your side. You tell their previous club that you have the PSD [pcik and intend to use it. So you pick up Joel Corey for free in the PSD.

Now you have, for example, Warnock, Mundy and Chapman for PSD pick 1, ND pick 35 and 51.

Now do you see how you use the PSD? Macho bravado gets you nowhere - you need to be smart and keep your head.

Simple.

now there's an explanation ;)

you ever watch 'Paper Moon' by any chance ??:rolleyes:

The art to any subtefuge.. or a con..cal lit what you may..is to get the willing fall.. I mean trading club to think its really helping itself..possibly even to the extent it thinks ITS getting the goods in the deal

So I trust A of B...you have about 3 or 4 players lined up for all our 'dud ' picks !!;)

Yeh, but is it that simple..

It is not that simple, but as Axis said, if you keep your head, you can achieve a few deals this way that are loaded our way.

Also, instead of giving our ND picks, we might be able to trade a player or two of ours to the other club.

How likely is it that anyone more valuable than Warnock will be available in the PSD? Generally it's older players who nominate for the PSD, which we don't want.

Therefore, why would we trade pick 35 for Warnock, when we could use that pick to grab yet another young kid?

If we really must give Freo something, we should offer them a pick in the 40's or better yet, a player (helping us clear the list at the same time).

How about this

Trade Bruce to Collingwood for their first pick.

Trade that pick to Geelong for Longegan and their second round pick

Trade that pick to Freo for Warnock.

These trades would never happen, but it shows how it is impossible to predict the trade week. Because player preferences, salary caps and team needs play a big part.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
