I thought this was a thread about Cale Morton and the rising star nomination but you guys are turning it into a personal slanging match thread.

Enough is enough.

Thanks.

The point is that he's missed a few targets that he was nailing at the start of the year. You don't just go backwards over night. It would seem then that his kicking is fine, but his confidence has taken a hit. Yes it's cliche to blame poor form on confidence, but the evidence speaks for itself in Morton's case.

He's getting a tonne of the ball now and is looking really dangerous. My mouth's watering.

Spot on Nasher. He's an exciting prospect. Knows the right spots to run to, seems to have great vision & every now and then does something that just oozes class. Of the top 4 picks I wouldn't swap him for Kruezer or Masten (although that Cotchin kid looks a ripper as well).

I remember the Doggies recruiting guy saying Cotchin and Morton were the equal best 2 of the draft

Yeah there were a few recruiters who claimed that there were 3 potential number 1 picks which is why I was originally disappointed to wind up at pick 4.

Sure he has missed the odd target but he is only 18 and finally we have some development coaches that can iron these creases out. I eagerly await the next couple of seasons. I think he will turn out a great player.

According to Hutchy, Urquart is "going to get the nomination tomorrow."

Didn't get a vote from the coaches, Morton got 4 votes.

And confirmed this morning.

which is a joke, Morton deserves it heaps more than Urquhart, typical media build up

Posted

Without bias, i really disagree with that decision.

Urquhart is a 20 year old who averages 17.3 possessions in a good team after playing 8 games

Cale is 18, has played all but 3 games this year, has had to find his own footy and found it just as often as Urquhart, and Morton has been a goal scorer; 11 versus Urquhart's 0.

The fact Cale has done all that at two years younger should have almost got it for him in itself.

Strange.

Cale got votes from the coaches and kicked 3 goals with 26 possessions, while the Roo got 22 possessions and no votes. If the coaches thought Cale was third best on the ground and the Roo was not in the best coaches five, it is strange.

I understand the Coaches don't award the weekly Rising Star but most in the AFL would feel that Cale has been pretty good this year.

don't know why everyone's huffing and puffing.

Who cares. Cale Morton will be a player and i'm happy with that.

If he has one game where he kicks accurately, he will get the nod, i do find it amazing that he missed out this week though.

Exactly. Still, I'd like to see him get the recognition he deserves. Might help him with his confidence.

Although I'd normally agree with you, at the moment we need all the positive news we can get, just might make a few hands dig deeper into pockets this month.

If he can have another great game this year he'll be there.

I care because it's an award given out by the AFL, the sport i follow more closely than any other, and i expect the awards to be given out properly and to deserving candidates.

I honestly feel it should have been Cale, and can't see much to the contrary

Needs to be in the best against Geelong on Friday night.........then he might have a chance in the NAB.

Are you suggesting that he's a chance of winning the NAB Rising Star?

IMO, Morton will probably get a nomination before the season ends, but won't poll a vote in the award. Palmer, Cotchin and Rioli will get votes from all the judges, which leaves 2 players for the remaining votes. Ibbotson will get a vote from a majority of judges, and I'd say that both Garland and Aussie will get a vote from someone.

I said he might have a chance. Personally, I don't think he will win it. I think its Palmer.

Outside chance at best. But if he strings a couple of great games, kicks 4 in each, he could poll well. Basically he has to really impress the judges like Walls, Healy, Geischen, Demetriou and Co.

Just on that! Demetriou and Anderson will miss this weekends games! They should be excluded from voting on the NAB.

That's a great list, especially considering that Morton, Valenti and Buckley are still yet to be nominated. However, it makes you wonder how meaningful it all is. All that figure suggests is that our young players have promising starts to their career, something which is irrelevant when we are sitting at the bottom of the ladder. I usually have big wraps for the Rising Star (ever since Rivers won it, really) but I'm starting to have second thoughts when I look at the randomness of that list (in terms of team order).

We should not only be focusing on the starts of careers of our young players, but of their development when they're 21-24. Hopefully, DB is working on that.

Dunn, Newton, Frawley and Martin have also not got one and they are all young and might be good

also a chap by the name of Jumpin' Jack grimes

You're right, we have had far too many players that start well and never step up to the top level... McLean, Davey, Jones and Bate spring to mind immediately. We have had 5 all-australians in a decade and they all had it just once each. Riccuito got 8 by himself and we badly need a player like this. Go Morts.

Cant believe he hasnt been nominated! he will soon though!

Im so rapt with his efforts, finds the ball so well..

Yes his field kicking can improve, but thats easy fix, he has the smarts, the athleticism, and geniune footy instinct.. plus he is 6'4 and could develop into anything!

Well ahead of schedule, looking great!
