McLEAN OUT FOR SEASON

"TENACIOUS Melbourne midfielder Brock McLean is set to miss the rest of the 2008 season after sustaining a serious left ankle injury during Sunday's thrilling one-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG."

Nooooooo ...

He is one player who we really need!

Probably not a bad thing. Get the surgery now and fighting fit for next year. We all know what he can do now - can't argue with his form.

We just have to bring in more young blokes; it's probably good in a way as we're not going anywhere this year and the other blokes will need to stand up and show us what there made of!

I guess we already know how he goes on the field - gives more game and evaluation time to others??? Trying to fnd a silver lining here...

Sorry to hear this.

Moloney, Neitz, Rivers, McLean, -> leadership = kiss of death

Hope he gets better, very proud of his year.

And congratulations Brad Green on the Bluey Truscott!

I guess the injuries to Moloney and McLean give Valenti a decent shot at earning a spot on the senior list.

It also means other young guys will get a run through the middle when they may not have otherwise.

Terrible news for McLean, though.

Robertson too.

Disappointing from a player development perspective as he's yet to be able to play out a full season. He's been very unlucky with injuries so far.

From a list management perspective it makes sense though. There's no point risking a player when you're not having a shot at finals. Might as well get the surgery over and done with now, so hopefully he is able to put in a full pre-season.

It also gives some of our younger lads like Valenti a further shot to stake a claim on their position on the list, so the news isn't all bad.

Well its a bit of this..a bit of that really isnt it. Important thing..is he gets better. Doing so enable a good preseason and hopefully present fighting fit for 09. Others have already stated the obvious List management aspects.

This only reall bad news if he fails to come up..and of course hopefully thats not the case.

I for one hope this gives Bell a chance to get a run through the middle. He is obviosuly struggling as a defender but has the speed skill and size to be able to be a good midfielder. I just hope he gets the chance

But has Bell got the nous and the peripheral vision for the midfield? I don't think he has. But I hope he proves me wrong...

Sorry to hear about McLean. Good decision made by Melbournefc. Enjoy a big break from Footy Brock. Better to reload for next season the Dees. Valenti will get more of an opportunity. So too CJ. Might see Maric get a game soon?

Mclean is just about to have a press conference in the next 10mins. Newton is also going to be there. (Maybe going talk about coming back into the side) I have an inside man there as we speak. I will keep every one updated

terrible news...but important he is 100% for next season. Just shows how corageous he was to try and get back out there on Sunday. Will definitely give more game time to a few youngsters which isnt a bad thing.

The biggest impact of McLean's injury is the effect it will have on Nathan Jones. All of a sudden he becomes our main inside onballer, hence will attract the best opposition tagger, if he's playing well. Not sure if he's up to it at this stage.

bugger me....15 rounds. Nearly got there Chook.

Valenti will move up one spot in the pecking order.

Hopefully we can find a smokie who can add an offensive game to their tagging credientials in the next 2 months.

You've got to wonder whether him going out there after he got injured made this injury worse, if it did then it's a massive error by the medical staff. Well done to him on getting out there, if was a fantastic and couragous effort by him but it's cost him half a season. I just hope he doesn't stuff up his pre-season.

Me thinks if we were a shot at finals this year he wouldn't have gone off for surgery so early ;)

He has ruptured ligaments that have little to do with whether we were making the finals or not.

Its a a damn shame given McLean was really starting to hit his straps and the team as whole were starting to show some belief.

This is [censored].

Second year in a row Brocks season has been ruined by a foot injury.

Damn shame too, cos he was gonna win the Bluey this year at just age 22.

my thoughts exactly. brock will be a good player, we all know that. now valenti will get a spot in the team on a more consistant basis, hopefully give us a chance to develop another player.

the down side for me is that brock was well on his way to playing good enough footy consistantly enough to be considered in a list of the games top players. he was really hitting his straps and continually performing well. that has been interrupted, and it would have been great to see him perform over the course of a whole year.

Posted

another thing that may impact on mclean is his leadership credentials, i.e. the capataincy. He is a great leader, but if he misses the season he could be overlooked in favor of someone who has played the whole year, e.g. bruce or jones... or even the dreaded miller (see yesterdays herald sun convo between mark robinson and the other guy).

Posted

Sad news for McLean and the club. He was well on his way to winning his first Bluey (although Green's been making big headway on him lately, and is now almost a certainty for it), and it's a shame that he's not going to play any more footy this year given his level of consistency.

As has been said though, better to get the surgery now and get him 100% ready for a big pre-season and round 1 next year.

A spot now opens up for Valenti, CJ, Buckley, Davey, Bartram and possibly Bell, all to get more time thru the guts, and gives us a real chance to evaluate our 2nd-tier midfielders, without McLean and Moloney. Big chance for Jones to step up to the next level too, although i do worry for him receiving the #1 tagger every week.

Posted
Cam Bruce the danger now for Brad Green for the Bluey Truscott!

Would take a massive swing in the form of both players for that to be the case. Bruce has been decent but no more this year. There would be a number of players between him and Green, and daylight somewhere in there as well.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
