Can Sylvia play as a forward ?

It's not as if playing him out of the square is the only option either. A rangy HF flanker would be good too, floating in drifting in from the flanks... He can have variety if he's coached properly.

He's played that role for the majority of his time. He seems to get lost a fair bit though.

Once you're on the list you take up as much space as anyone else, and I imagine the coaching staff pick players on merit.

You make a valid point regarding fans though - Sylvia's got far more praise than he's deserved through deeds on the field.

Now I just wish he would actually live up to some of those lofty expectations so that we can continue to heap praise on him.

Speaking of Morton, why the hell was he left out of the side V St Kilda with the flu - 3 days before the match. Surely that was the MFC way of saying the kid needs a rest.

3 days rest is enough if its a "man-cold", but in the modern game you'd barely last 10 minutes if you had a flu virus.

Great point Jerry, he's in the team because fans and the coaching staff are striving to see him deliver on the potential we all want him to have, rather than because he's delivering and deserves a spot. His high selection in the draft means people like Yze Magic believe he's going to be a star without him actually showing anything to suggest that.

I basically agree, but I think sometimes this can work the other way as well; as in, people had such high expectations when we picked him up that when he doesn't turn out to be the star we all hoped he would be, people start saying he's done nothing and shouldnt even get a game, which isnt really true. He seems to be a pretty divisive player on here; some people think he'll be a superstar and some think he's a dud. They're both probably wrong.

He had a reasonable year last year, and has been mostly solid in the backline this year- not fantastic but definitely a best 22-type. Forgetting where we picked him up in the draft and looking at him objectively just as a player, he looks like he'll be a handy footballer but no superstar. Its a shame we didn't do better with pick 3, but theres been plenty of much, much worse top ten picks.

I don't get it - he marks well, he kicks well, he's tough, a good tackler, makes good decisions, etc. but there is just something lacking. He simply is not involved in the action for long periods of games.

The thing he lacks is football smarts. He has excellent skills and makes good decisions it is his ability to know where to go to get the ball that is the issue.

Sylvia may kick 5 goals total between now and the end of round 22. Hack of the highest order. But then that is what turns you on huh Yze-Magic??

I agree with you Yze Magic, put him in the square and say kick us some goals. He's got a huge vertical leap, strong hands and a thumping accurate kick. Why we haven't experimented with Col at FF during a NAB cup series at least is beyond me.

You are Y_M's twin. Not the same surely?

Well the jury is in.

Colin CAN play as a forward (which I knew all along)

6 scoring shots, for a return of 3.2 is a good days work.

Should have booted 5.0 as he missed two easy set shots.

Only a matter of time before 'The Kid' kicks a bag of 8.

Mate, don't get too excited yet. He played ok today, His defensive pressure was terrible. when he had the ball he was exciting.I don't think Colin will dominate in the near future, give him 12 months

Yeah, the jury is in on two points:

- Sylvia IS a viable option up forward... I agree with you on that point

- You failed maths... how does 3 goals, 2 behinds add up to 6 scoring shots? LoL

Keep up the good work mate

Yeah, it didn't score though... so just a 'shot' not a 'scoring shot'. Meh, who cares!!!

Ok, poor use of words by me.

Sylvia had SIX SHOTS ON GOAL. One failed to make the distance.

wonder if anyone saw the ch 10 coverage of the game. in the last 6-10 minutes when the opposition was chipping it around but there was still a faint hope for us blight was v. critical of sylvia for being the only one who didn't man up. they put the camera on him running around, doing his own thing.

  • 3 weeks later...

His played in a range of positions this year.

Back, Forward, Midfield, Wing.

What do we do with him now. Hes been given enough time to develop, is he going to be the classy midfielder we all hoped?

Look 2 trade him...:(

Look, I was so excited when we drafted him, it just hasnt happened, for alot of reasons..

But, I think he's best as an attacking Midfielder, and he was drafted as one, so keep him there and see what happens, I really would love him to stick it up my ass, because id wanna see him reach his potential, which is MASSIVE!..and he might, is getting 5 % better each week..

He can save himself, but time is NOW!!

Agree. Sylvia's challenge is the same as Bartram and Millers. They need to justify their selection.

After 5 years on the list Sylvia has shown he could be a steady capable player for MFC. However, I have seen little to suggest that he would be the "star" we crave for.

Agree totally, and with Neitz and Robbo out of the side, Bailey should throw him the challenge. Still don't think he has matured yet. His body is ready, just not sure if his footy brain is at the level required. It needs to come from within him. He has been nurtured enough. Come on Hi Ho Sylvia lets see those competitive juices "really flow"! he's played 60-odd games now....hopefully it is time to blossom.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
