Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Port supporters on bigfooty reckon Watts and 36 for picks 30 and 33.

So a lower end second round draft pick and also a 3 pick upgrade in the late second round as steak knives.

Is this fair?

I'd actually say that the above proposed trade is a reasonable equivalence to the Bernie Vince for pick 27 trade we did with them a few years back.  Though I do worry/wonder with all these free agent compo picks getting thrown in if 30 and 33 ends up more like 32/33 and 35/36.

I also wonder if there could be a last minute twist to the Jack Watts trade scenario, with him ending up at the Gold Coast or Brisbane?  Not sure what cap space Port would have left after Rocky and Motlop, but I can't see Watts agreeing to move for less money and as I understand it Brisbane/GC are the teams with both a need for more mature players and the draft picks to trade with.

I doubt he'd agree to that, Geelong/Port he's a reasonable chance of playing in finals.  Brisbane and Gold Coast not so much.

If we got pick 15 everyone would be happy,  but if it is 30 not so happy. Does that not tell us that we are reasonably happy to let Jack go, it is just the price.

I think most people would think it a reasonably acceptable propersition, without nessasrily being happy about it.

I'll only really be happy about this or otherwise in retrospect, which is a prvillage I know our coaching staff and list management don't really have.  Assuming we complete the trade amd Jack were to move on to for fill his talent potential and play a pivital role in a flag for Port I'd be pretty [censored].  A range of other scenarios are possible which would determine how I ultimately feel about this trade.

Ture.  He's a reasonable chance of playing finals at Melbourne though too, so it really depends somewhat on the finacial attractiveness or otherwise of the deal as well as how repairable Watts feels his professional relationship with Jones and Goodwin is.

Do the MFC and some of it's supporters want Watts gone so badly we would be prepared to pay out the difference in his current contact terms and what he might get at another club, just to see him gone?

All pure speculation, I'm just reading into the scenario.

It still rather bemuses me that so many have yet to twig what this has been about.

The MFC don't care about any value for this trade. They've always been prepared to take chump change dressed up as some 'dowery'.

Smell the flowers folks.... It's just been about pushing Jack out the door.

Classy.

Houli? Martin? Cotchin? Rance? With Watts gone, Salem is the only Demon who comes anywhere near this quartet in quality and consistency of ball use.

Can't agree here...

Houli is a pretty decent kick (poor set shot), Martin has always been a long kick but only recently tidied up his use of the ball. Cotchin ok, Rance was Tommy Mac but has improved but still not his strength, Lever would have him covered here.

I would think Hibberd and Lewis for a start would come near them, probably better.

Trac is a good field kick who like Martin will get much better, goal kicking a bit hit and miss.

Oliver when he kicks is a very good kick of the ball.

It's not all doom & gloom 'Akum'

The Age reporting that Jack has gone overseas. Probably not aware of Bernie's wedding in Adelaide. He is probably off after that.

It would now seem likely that Jack has made his mind up about which club he prefers and would have instructed his Manager accordingly.

Reports suggest it is Port.

If true, why hasn't it been confirmed so that the clubs can start negotiating?

Maybe they are negotiating anyway in the belief it will happen.

Bit strange really.

And they moved the ball into space brilliantly and lowered their eyes into attack, resisted the temptation most of the time to bomb it on to Riewoldt's head (the way that we do predictably with Hogan and, yes, Watts, under Goodwin) which would have allowed Adelaide's tall defenders to pick it off with ease. They either hit forward targets, or delivered it low and hard and into spaces when no targets were available. They were brilliantly coached, and they were encouraged by their coach to take the game on and take risks.

In all the bluster about Richmond's pressure, some have totally missed their skill and their quality of ball use. If they hadn't been able to hurt Adelaide so much when they had the ball, a lot of their pressure would have been wasted, and it would have been much harder to sustain.

I need to watch that game again.

I would not have said that silky skills were the mainstay of that gameplan.

Also Hibberd is an elite kick and Garlett and Petracca are close

A pick around mid second round and freeing up $1m is deemed reasonable. Suggestions of 30 and 3 pick upgrade on 36.

Hardly anyone else is chasing him apparently. No offers from Swans or Cats.

What do you see as his price?

The chase in all likelihood was thwarted . Ill let you figure that out ;)

His price ? Whatever Port offers. Bit of a buyers market effect here.

JM etc might ask for X. ( Bit if showmanship pretence really in this instance ) .. Port will give Y....and why not...we don't want him. Port get a bargain.

Might be as simple as #30

What do you think is a fair price?

Remember we are also seeking to clear $1m of cap space. That might be the space that allows us to get someone else.

For a guy who finished 21st in the B&F, was dropped to the two's after being held back from pre-season matches for a half-baked attitude to pre-season.

If we get pick 30 we'll be doing well. It's all he's worth.

Reality.

Do you copy and paste your constant bleating, bing?

In answer to your question about "how else you can do it":  how about something neutral that aims at the ball (i.e. the issue) and not the man (Watts)? Such as: "Our game next year is going to be much more focussed on contested ball. Watts has great talents, but not in the areas that our team will be moving into. We've therefore encouraged him to seek other options where his talents will be a better fit for their style of play."

Pick 15, please.

Thanks for the laugh.

You and others still would have carried on like pork chops with this approach.

There aren't many secrets in the football industry.  All other 17 clubs are well aware of Jack's shortcomings.

"More focussed on contested ball" ?  Lol

Like they didn't know this was a key ingredient to our game-plan this year.  We were second in CP.

Keep clutching.

Exactly.

Richmond turned the ball over like there was no tomorrow.

Akum's arguments are vacuous and self-serving.

30 + 49 for Watts + 66 values him at about pick 22 and is about best case scenario.

Then 49 for Balic.

Leaves us with 28, 30,  36 and 47 but only 3 list spots.  We'd need to upgrade 2 of those picks to one earlier one.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
