  1. Ahh, I see what you did there. Very clever. A bit of the old 'tell us all your secrets and be judged, or I'll just assume you have secrets and judge you anyway' routine. A lot of police have done a lot of 'questionable' things and there are still aspects of warped culture and corruption that keep festering and refuse to die. Australia's generally, are among the best in the world these days but still have plenty of rot in them, whether it is corruption, bigotry, or such vain-glorious creepiness as this particular instance. And there's still an awful lot of people who have vivid, sometimes very recent memories driving their mistrust of police. It's not so simple that you can just say 'did you get stiched up or are you a P.O.S?' That's not a mature way to go about things at all.

  3. No. 42. 2015 Round 12 v Geelong at Kardinia Park The Dees hadn’t won at Kardinia Park for 10 years. The Cats were arrogant and had considered the Dees easybeats. But not on this day. The Dees were ready to go from the start and the Cats had a fight ahead this time. The Dees kicked 5 goals to lead by 11 points at qtr time and then held on to be 5 points ahead at 1/2 time. The third quarter was an arm wrestle as the cats tried to get ahead. A great goal to Jeremy Howe from a mark and kick from the boundary about 40 metres out was a beauty and setup a 2 goal 3/4 qtr time advantage. The Dees kicked 5 goals in the last to the Cats two goals to seal the upset victory. Nathan Jones was outstanding as a leader. Gawn controlled the ruck and was showing his potential. Brayshaw showed why he was a top draft pick. Recycled group of Vince, Lamumba, Cross and Garlett (4 goals) were fantastic. A young Neal-Bullen kicked 3 goals in his third game as a half forward. A rare win at the Cattery was celebrated with hope for the rest of 2015. Melbourne 18.5.117 defeated Geelong 13.11.89

  4. It actually IS that simple, as you just suggested in this line "there's still an awful lot of people who have vivid, sometimes very recent memories driving their mistrust of police". Straight-up people dont develop a hatred of Police unless they or someone close has had an unpleasant run-in. It just doesnt happen. And my statement is 100% true... i have never in my life met anyone who hates Police for no Reason, who isnt just a bogan piece of excrement. The public only develops a dislike of Coppers because of either of the 2 reason i have just stated (Bad experience/stitchup) or they are law-breaking dirtbags who dont like being caught doing the wrong thing. I get [censored] off at people who blanket-slag Police when the poor bastards have to put up with so much crap from the public. Nobody in my family is a Copper, nor have they ever been. In fact the only member i know personally is the husband of my Ex-wife, and stepfather to my daughter. He is a champion person but not the reason i have empathy for Police. I agree with you that there are still bad seeds in the force. No doubt about it. I have even had the misfortune to have met one who was a total d'bag for some reason. Didnt make me think the whole force is corrupt because i can think rationally. He was a VERY small minority of the force. You were happy to label VicPol as Australias most corrupt force. Without evidence, thats nothing but angry hyperbole.

  5. I have no idea what this Zurich Tiny Team is. Did they put something on the Club website explaining what it is? I never saw it. Am I the only one that doesn't know what this is? Could someone explain it please? Thanks.

  6. No winners here. A sad affair and a terrible outcome for Dean. Ricky Nixon proves himself to be an obnoxious, glory hunting, narcissistic [censored]. The police officer involved who thought breaching privacy was a good idea. The gutter press that posted pics gained through this obvious breach of privacy. Appropriate process should be followed. Public interest stopped at ‘he was arrested and not bailed’. Everything after that is salacious trash that serves no one.

  7. Based on just these leaked photos, or do you have some other evidence to back up this ridiculous claim? Vic Police generally do a fantastic job despite working for a Government that doesnt seem to have any great affection for them, and a judiciary stacked with Libertarians.

  11. Absolutely. Peter Matera was ready to sign and come across. Dees would have grabbed him with PSD#1. WA media went nuts and camped out the front of his house. The Eagles players and coaches put pressure on him to stay and I recall the club offered him leadership credentials. Matera played for 5 more years across 1998 to 2002. He would have been a star in the MCG and might have helped us in the 1998, 2000 & 2002 finals runs. Certainly would have been the Biggest get since Templeton and Moore moves across.

  12. NOT if they do not work and live by their own law standards they don't, 'W4tA'. If they see a crime amongst their own, they should report it, but they do not. Why have those coppers, who received the photo's, reported it to their authorities, 'W4tA'. Why didn't they act responsibly.?This has only happened because it got into the media, and the Police leadership became aware of it through lawyers and ordinary people.

  13. Sacked!... removed from the force is the only way for this breach of trust... to show other coppers that they need to show respect at all times. To everyone. Otherwise the police become the same as the churches... one rule for them, and other rules for the rest of us all. Not to mention, deaths in custody. There is another can of worms for coppers the world over.

  16. Very sad for Laidley and his family. A good footballer and coach. Many ex footballers fall short on the moral rectitude stakes. Pretty much a reflection on the vicissitudes of humankind. He should receive some sympathy and compassion. Again highlights the importance of good mental health and the struggle that we all experience in maintaining the appropriate balance in our life. We all need to be able to repress some of our thoughts and behaviours. It is just another example of the dangers of social media and the communication of material of a personal nature.

  18. So no evidence then? C'mon dude, you know that was just hyperbole. What did you get done for that made you so salty? If it was a stitch-up i could understand your anger. Was it? I have never met anyone who hated police for no reason unless they were a total P.O.S. Anyone else needs a reason.

  23. Best in my lifetime: Tulip, Garry, Ox, Jakovich and Jurrah Obviously I'm not going on longevity, but skill, excitement, natural talent and ability to change a game. Hence the last two. Neita could easily be there as well.

  25. I started following Melbourne in 1965 (I know...) so Barassi was before my time. The best five that I've seen would probably be Hassa Mann, Robbie Flower, Gary Hardeman, Garry Lyon and David Schwarz. Very honourable mentions to Stan Alves, Greg Wells, Jim Stynes, Allen Jakovich, Jeff Farmer and David Neitz.

  28. Viney was a gun and an inspiration throughout 1998 in particular. But I can't go past three All Australian selections for Gawn - he'll be remembered as a great of the club.

  29. Love Gawn however he really has only come into his own last few years whereas Todd was a consistent great payer for us over the whole journey. Going with Viney but if this was on in a couple of years and Max continues his current form then Max would get the nod.

  31. Just wow, all these screenshots of text messages going around with alleged offences and the photos are just horrible. Really feel for the Laidley family and hope they stay away from social media as much as they can. It’s a shame something like this will take the focus off the virus for the next week or so.

  36. I have and always will regard Ron Barassi Jr. as the # 1 Melbourne player of my lifetime. He personified strength, courage, determination and leadership. He won games for us and with him in the side, we won premierships - lots of them. Forget Essendon (2000), Brisbane (2001-3) and Geelong (2007-), we were the best side in the history of the game, our reign lasted for a decade and RDB was the best of the best. Robbie Flower was the most skillful player to wear the red and blue (I might be ancient but Ivor Warne-Smith was before my time). Slight of build, Robbie was graceful and time stopped when he was near the ball. He was a magnificent mark, would run, bounce and mesmerise the opposition and one of his runs from coast to coast via pockets, flanks and wings to score a goal at Windy Hill one day was the most sublime pieces of action this game has ever produced. It wasn't his fault that we only made the finals once in his entire career but it would have been unbearable going to the footy between 1972 and 1987 but for him. My memories of Laurie Mithen are fading but I can't recall the dynamic centreman ever being beaten. He taught some of my friends who were students at Melbourne High School in the 60s and they used to call him a "bastard". That's how he played his football - like a real bastard and that's why Melbourne was so successful when he played in the middle. Stan Alves played on the opposite wing to Robbie Flower and arrived at Melbourne at the wrong time - 1965, when the Melbourne show was closing down. He was a champion, a beautiful mover and a clever thinking footballer. Sadly, he left to achieve premiership success elsewhere. It always amazed me that Melbourne couldn't do better with Alves and Flower on the wings and Greg Wells in the middle. Shows how bad we were everywhere else on the field in those days. Brian Dixon used to count his kicks in the days before statisticians took over the game. He was quite brilliant and although his kicking style wasn't the greatest, he was remarkably effective and contributed enormously to his team's successful era. Strangely, I have picked three wingmen in my top five. They were always important on the wide, open spaces of the MCG. I couldn't fit in anybody from the modern era but the others would be Jimmy, Garry Lyon, Alan Johnson, Shane Woewodin (I'm assuming I can mention him now), Neita and Brian Wilson for a short period of time. Gerard Healy might have made it had he stuck around long enough instead of making a run for the money and The Ox would probably have rivalled Laurie Mithen for my third spot if not for the tragedy of his knees. Of the current crop of players (and I don't want to put any pressure on prematurely but ...) I reckon our first three picks in the 2007 draft, Morton, Grimes and Maric all have the capacity to go places in this game. It's just a question of whether they have the will and the application to put in the enormous amount of work necessary.
