  2. "The Demons are a beautiful team - beautiful - I know because I am smart. They are going to win bigly. We are going to win so much and so often we are gonna get sick of winning. I told Goodwin that our defense is going to be so strong. so strong. We are going to build a wall across the half back line and keep all other teams out. And we are going to get the AFL to pay for it. I will place a travel ban on any other team coming into our defensive half. I think I can also say that we are sick.. so sick.. yes we are sick.. of the dishonest hawks and their fake premierships ( lock them up)." - Founder and owner of Trump Enterprises.

  4. I'm really looking forward to the day - and it's coming soon - when Jack's form does it's own talking for him. The last time he was anywhere close to full fitness he was one of our best in a NAB Cup/Challenge game a few years ago when we beat Richmond. I hope he can prove himself again although he is up against some strong opposition for a place in our best 22.

  5. I played with Aaron Vandenberg at Ainslie and he is not that quick. Neither he or Trengove has explosive speed to break through packs. What a lot of people don't realise is that leg speed can be negated by reading of the play. If someone breaks and spreads a kicker in the AFL rarely has a lot of time to make a decision, usually 1-2 seconds. In those 1 to two seconds leg speed is only going to get you so far. But if you have the ability to read a game and understand where the play is going (and Trengove excels at this) you can put yourself in a position where the break from the spread is ineffective. This is what coaches love and is not play that is rewarded but it can potentially stop a quick spread and forces the kicker to change their mind and that can result in a turnover. Tom Scully is the best example of this. His smarts and 2 way running is why he is so highly rated. I for one am not worried about Trengove's leg speed. His smarts, professionalism and inside grunt are his assets and I expect to see him feature regularly in our 22 and do well.

  9. I actually hope Dunn does well, his departing message last year showed nothing but class. What really annoys me is when commentators mention Howe's switch to defense last year as some sort of masterstroke on Buckley or Collingwood's behalf. Did these guys watch any footy at all in 2015? Huddo, one of the better ones, even mentioned it tonight.

  13. I'm one of Garlett's biggest critics but it took all of about 5 minutes in the intraclub the other day to see his speed is still a cut above and he gets to the right spots. I'd like to see some good form in the preseason games but I still think he's close to a lock to start the year - especially with Ben Ken and Kent in rehab - and then it's a matter of if he performs. Petracca playing as a deep forward and opening a half forward spot might be the most logical way if you had to replace him. JKH and a lot of the others are better up the ground players and young Dion Johnstone is unlikely to be ready even if his tackling looked great in the intraclub.

  16. Got to training at about 11am, so quite a bit late, but still watched about 50 mins of drills. My second training in a week (before this, the last session was 20 years ago)! Was keen to get a few points jotted down given the plenty of reading of others posts in recent years (much appreciated guys!!). Few key points: Ball movement was very quick and typically hit the target, which is impressive given the strong northerly. Boys looked relatively relaxed and were enjoying the session. Plenty of talent on display - will be a very competitive list this year. Lots of the top guys did well (i.e. Jones, Vince, etc), and the younger guys look fantastic (e.g. Hunt, Trac, Clarry, etc). Coaches were very aggressive a few times - e.g. demanded that the defending team win the next ball in a half ground exercise. The focus and intent was great to watch I really think JKH and Trenners will get games this year, as both look confident, are moving really well, and skills looked solid. Had a very close look at "Weido". At face value, I thought there was not alot of glitz or skills to get super excited about, but then the competitive 1 on 1 marking and leading commenced, and he was very effective. Football nous impressive. All the key backs, key forwards and rucks were in a group for 1 on 1 competitive marking. Frosty is a super impressive athlete, and looked very good. Oscar looks fit and has bulked up. Was stunned at how much weight Pedo had lost, but he looked trim and super fit - I think he would be hard to leave out of the team. Big Maxy and Pencil had a great tussle, with Max generally winning but Pencil doing well (although tended to drop a few marks). Young Flippa was given a caning - noticed he lost about 6 of these competitive drills in a row, with most of his competitors marking the ball outright. Not super surprising, but he's certainly got lots of work to do to catch the others. Jesse was looking sharp ... spitting and hissing his way around the field. Looks mean and pumped. His run up is, without doubt, a little smoother. However, he missed quite a few today (wind didn't help!) Young Johnstone is seriously built. Moves quick and tackles aggressively although dropped a couple of marks he should have taken Finally, noticed Brian Lake wonder over to the ground with his hat and glasses on .... maybe spying for the Bulldogs? Or perhaps missing his hawks days and wanting to hang with Lewis ... or perhaps he's on the bandwagon and needed to check out the Dees hype!

  19. You'll be pleased to know that Islamic leaders consider leftists useful idiots. They'd like you. Islam is not just a religion but a political system as well. The state is intended to be inseparable from religious rule. Islamic law, or Sharia, is complete and not designed to coexist with or be subordinate to other legal systems. Muslims are not meant to be ruled by non-Muslims. The Qur'an is very clear that they are to resist unbelievers by any means until Islam establishes political supremacy. This doesn't mean that everyone must be forced to become Muslim, but rather that everyone must submit to Muslim rule. Many Muslims are loyal to the non-Muslim countries in which they live, of course, but it is in spite of Islamic teaching. Islam does not believe in freedom or democracy. These are man-made laws. They only accept God's law. Here's some light reading for you from archives I've found over the years (note - I'm not going to spend much time debating a leftist, but happy to try and make you a bit smarter on the topic): The Qur'an: Qur'an (5:3) - "This day have I perfected your religion for you." This verse is often interpreted to mean that any government outside of Sharia is unnecessary at best, and corruptive at worst. Qur'an (18:26) - "[Allah] maketh none to share in his government." This was probably intended as a slam against polytheists and the Christian belief in the Trinity, but it has also been used as the basis for criticizing earthly governments. Qur'an (19:64) - "And we do not descend but by the command of your Lord; to Him belongs whatever is before us and whatever is behind us and whatever is between these, and your Lord is not forgetful." Qur'an (4:141) - "...And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers." Qur'an (63:8) - "...might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not." The "hypocrites" are defined as Muslims in name only, those who do not submit to the theocracy of Allah. Qur'an (5:49) - "So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires, but beware of them lest they seduce thee from some part of that which Allah hath revealed unto thee" Allah's Qur'an takes priority over the desires of the people. A democratic nation is by nature one that is not governed by Islamic law, meaning that a Muslim citizen would have divided loyalty. It's clear from this verse which side he must choose. Qur'an (3:28) - "Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah." The word 'friend' is Awliyaa which is inclusive of friends, protectors and helpers - the components of civil society. See also verse 5:51 Qur'an (4:123) - "Not your desires, nor those of the People of the Book (can prevail): whoever works evil, will be requited accordingly. Nor will he find, besides Allah, any protector or helper." Qur'an (28:17) - "O my Lord! For that Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace on me, never shall I be a help to those who sin!" It is difficult to reconcile this verse with the civic duty of a public office holder in a pluralistic society. Qur'an (4:59) - "O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority from among you..." Oddly enough, this verse is sometimes used in an attempt to make the case that Muslims should respect a non-Muslim civil government. But a careful reading makes it clear that the rulers Muslims are to obey are from among their own body of believers. This verse commands strict obedience to the leader (even if he steals and flogs them, according to a hadith reported by Sahih Muslim). How can this refer to a non-Muslim leader when other parts of the Qur'an call for violent Jihad against persecution from non-believers? See also 9:29, which establishes the ideal relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims. From the Hadith: Muslim (19:4294) - "When you meet your enemies who are polytheists [Christians], invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them ... If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them" Bukhari (53:392) - While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, "Let us go to the Jews." We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle." Additional Notes: In Islam, loyalty is to Allah and his religion. It cannot be to a kafir country. As the former mufti of the Grand Mosque in Mecca put it in a recent fatwa, "His homeland may be not Islamic, so how can he be loyal to his homeland?" Scholar Jamal Badawi insists that, "Muslims should not melt in any pot except the Muslim brotherhood pot." A CAIR executive director (in the United States) recently said, "if we are practicing Muslims, we are above the law of the land." The Calcutta Qur'an Petition says of Muslim communities that "even fresh converts tend to become highly orthodox people and follow the sayings of [the Qur'an] with a fanatical zeal with the result that whichever country as their sizable number amongst its population can never have peace on its soil." Where Muslim minorities exist, there is unusual social strain manifested by dissention, demand and disloyalty, as well as a cohesive group identity that resists self-reflection and thrives on the perception of victimization by the majority. Islam teaches that nations are in one of two major categories - Dar-al Harb (house of war) and Dar-al-Islam (Muslim rule). Any nation that is not Muslim is therefore, by definition, at war with Islam (or, at best, in contradiction to the preferred order). Muslims cannot be expected to maintain loyalty to a nation that is at war with their religion. To be fair, some Muslim scholars contend that there is a middle ground, Dar al-Ahd (land of covenant) or Dar al-Sulh (land of truce), in which non-Muslim countries agree to allow Muslims to practice their faith and evangelize freely in exchange for peace (rights that are formally denied to infidels in Islamic lands). Scholars consider this a transitional period leading to the eventual triumph of Islam via conversion. The practical definitions of Dar al-Ahd and Dar al-Sulh are somewhat nebulous. Some feel, for example, that denying Muslims their own system of law and Sharia courts constitutes an interference with Islam. Others believe that these states of condition only applied in Muhammad's day. Still others feel that a truce has a ten year-limit, and can be broken anytime by the Muslim party. Another difficulty with these "middle ground" options is that there is no central authority to declare which non-Muslim nations fall outside the category of Dar al-Harb. Ultimately, true Muslims are citizens of the ummah (Islamic community) and not of any country - and the ummah has no recognized leader. Even a government of Muslims is not necessarily a Muslim government. Islam requires Islamic law, therefore theocracy is the only pure form of government. In fact, this is what propels the vast majority of violence in the Muslim world, which victimizes Muslims themselves more than any other group. Although Muslim apologists sometimes claim that Islamic terrorists aren't Muslim by virtue of the fact that they kill other Muslims, the Qur'an advocates striving against both unbelievers and hypocrites, the latter of which are Muslims who profess Islam, but do not support Islamic rule over the way of the infidel as required (see Muslim 20:4696). Hypocrites include any government which does not uphold strict Sharia, as well as those that make alliances with a non-Muslim country (thereby making covenants and truces quite difficult to legitimize). This is the real reason terrorists kill fellow Muslims, particularly local police, troops and officials who are in the service of such governments. One of the most influential Islamic scholars of the modern age, Egyptian Sayyid Qutb, says that Muslims have a duty to overthrow any non-Islamic governments by violent means. He explains: "Islam is not merely a belief, so that it is enough merely to preach it. Islam, which is a way of life, takes practical steps to organize a movement for freeing man. Other societies do not give it [Islam] any opportunity to organize its followers according to its own method, and hence it is the duty of Islam to annihilate all such systems, as they are obstacles in the way of universal freedom. Only in this manner can the way of life be wholly dedicated to Allah, so that neither any human authority nor the question of servitude remains, as is the case in all other systems which are based on man's servitude to man." [Quoted from Andrew Bostom's The Legacy of Jihad] Elsewhere, Qutb puts it even more bluntly: The foremost duty of Islam in this world is to depose Jahiliyyah (unbelievers) from the leadership of man, and to take the leadership into its own hands and enforce the particular way of life which is its permanent feature." [Quoted from Robert Spencer's Religion of Peace?] In a book promoted by the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Islamic scholar Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi writes that "Islam wishes to destroy all States and Governments anywhere on the face of the earth which are opposed to the ideology and programme of Islam regardless of the country or the Nation that rules it. Islam requires the earth – not just a portion – but the whole planet.” (source) Whether or not a Muslim believes in active rebellion against secular or non-Muslim rule (and most may not), it is does not change the fact that Islam is defined by allegiance to Allah and his self-proclaimed messenger, Muhammad. Therefore any extraneous loyalty that is in contradiction to what Allah has already established would be strictly forbidden. [It should be noted that Muslims as individuals vary widely in their understanding of and allegiance to Islam. While ideological scrutiny may be appropriate for certain sensitive positions in the intelligence, military or law enforcement communities, simply being a Muslim is not sufficient grounds for denying employment to or making assumptions about any such individual.]

  20. Check under this link around the 2min mark on the Hungry for sport page 11:19 Ben Darwin; Gainline.biz on Hungry for Sport I thought Demonlanders might be interested in discussing the ideas brought forward by Ben Darwin (starts around the 2min mark). He's researched pretty much all the major team sports around the world, not just AFL to come to his conclusions. I guess it grabbed me as I must admit to agreeing with his conclusions and have thought along these lines from observation rather than research. Of course I also liked that his research showed us to be in a good place as club going forward, also that Collingwood were in screwed. My take on his research is that if you build a stable club, recruit (in AFL language the draft), develop your own players (you can augment the list but not too many outsiders) and don't look to recruit big fish as saviours, then success will come...

  22. The rationale is that it's the pre-season and they like to give others a chance to prove themselves. Hibberd has had a few injury concerns and they may want to use Watts and Frost in games 2 and 3. Are you going to argue the rationale of giving others a rest when we play next week and others miss out? Not hard to work out after years of watching pre-season games. They always rest a few.

  28. I'm a VDB fan. Watching some of last years replays it's interesting how many important passages of play he's involved in. He's strong and imposing, he's good overhead, he knows how to find the ball and he can play a variety of positions well.Unlike many who "rest forward" he is actually a danger and a difficult match up. Whilst he doesn't have a stand out strength he doesn't have any weaknesses. And I agree on his pace. The playing group recognize his pace. He was picked pretty much when fit last year, didn't train much during the week due to his ankle and missed some preseason as well. Indications are the FD rate him. Having said all that he is in a serious fight for his spot in the team along with a number of others. Melksham, Hibberd and Lewis have added some real anxiety to the bottom six in the 22.

  29. Forget implemented. It stands no chance of meeting its goals even if implemented. To ban entry of people from countries to stop the terrorists from entering is nonsensical. Most of the organised terror plots have terrorists using fake passports and visas or moving to countries where there is some ease in obtaining passport/visas. If terrorists are not home grown they will just obtain a passport from a country where there is no ban. This is the biggest fraud since "we need to stop the boats as we there may be terrorists". Terrorists are not trained and construct sophisticated plans and then get on a rickety boat with some chance of surviving the high seas. This is not an argument on whether or not Governments want individuals from certain coming to their countries. This is just highlighting that the "terrorist" reason given is bogus.

They seemed to bury their heads in the sand and go all Sgt Schultz, I'm not excusing what happened thereafter and think EFC got off lightly, all considered but the AFL, AFLPA & player manager negligence has never been fully explored and if EFC got of lightly I would suggest these guys all but got away "scot free".

  33. The Hawking Field - The ball is assigned a theoretical gravity well value of 100, while each square meter of the field without a Demon already in it is given a 'well' value of 1, each square meter containing an opposition player is assigned a value of 10, and each square meter already containing a Demon is given a value of -10. At all times each player moves in the direction with the highest 'well value' as perceived from their current position, after adjustment for proximity by dividing each square meter's value by the distance in meters to it. For example, other things being equal, if ball 'A' (value 100) is 10 meters away and opponent 'b' is also 10 meters away but slightly to one side, then Demon 'c' will run in a direction mostly towards the ball but slightly towards the opponent player, putting their body between the opponent and the ball prior to directly reaching the ball. Of course, this is all ridiculous. Thankfully the original theory was abandoned in favour of the much improved: The Probablistic Hawking Field - It is only based on current position. Whereas to truly make a decision you need to know both the current position AND the momentum of all the objects. Since this can't be simultaneously done through classical measurement due to the uncertainly principle, it is necessary to apply probabilistic methods to obtain a set of possible next positions based on previous observed movement of objects such as the ball 'a' and opponent 'b' mentioned above and then apply our original formula based on the distribution of those possibilities. And if anyone has a problem with this game plan, just remember that until it has been observed it should be considered both better and worse than any other game plan you might suggest.

  36. Word from the club is that Trenners isn't going to be spending valuable time trying to rediscover his acceleration. He has instead spent a considerable amount of hours working on his contested ball craft so he can become harder inside where his lack of speed wouldn't be as critical. Trenners presented to the club mid contract negotiations on what he would be doing differently if recontracted.

  37. Stayed at training for a bit over an hour. White and Mitch King in the rehab group with Kent and Kennedy. And Hulett and Tim Smith were helping them out but rejoined the main group afterwards. Kent doesn't look too far off rejoining. I didn't tick off the full list but I believe everyone else was there and training. Certainly Joel Smith was back in the group, Tyson was moving well. Notably JKH was pared with Hunt in the run through session and was holding his own. Rucks practised their craft after the running with Gawn, Spencer and Flipper under Stafford's tutelage. I didn't watch it too closely. For the contested activity that Ken referred to a square box was set up at either end with the squad being split in half and then in to two teams. Essentially a game of keepings off with the focus on intercept marking and quick ball movement. The northerly had kicked in by this juncture so there was a stiff breeze but the overall execution in terms of kicking skills was good. Once again, JKH was prominent as was Trengove. Oliver sublime in traffic. One shank from Melksham in an otherwise polished display. Lots of enthusiasm as you'd expect on the eve of the first hit out. Pleasingly Hibberd joined in everything and looked unrestricted. There's still some issues in terms of Petracca's kicking skills - it's a s much about keeping his decision making in check with his execution capability. It will be interesting in terms of who makes the squad on Saturday - there's plenty to choose from.

  43. Copuchas and Jock Strap have covered it better than I can, so just a few extras from me. - Mitch White hurt an ankle at one stage while with the rehab group. I didn't see the incident but he hobbled around on his own for a while. No assistance from any medical staff though. - The rehabbers did a lot of 'quick hands' drills. One drill had the receiver on his knees with his partner only a few metres away kicking it at him. Just after the trainer said 'let the kicker know if you want it harder' BenKen said "yep, harder" and the very next was a low bullet that got him right in the nuts much to the amusement of Kent, Smith, Hullett, White etc. - One other drill that I don't think has been mentioned was a simple kicking drill with the aim to move it on past a man (dummy) on the mark quickly. Three players in the line, 20-25m apart with a silhouette/mannequin marking the man in the middle. He'd receive a kick from one end, wheel around, and kick it past the mannequin on the mark to the player at the other end. It looked pretty good but it really looked like a man on the mark who actually moved would smother/impact a lot of the kicks. - I only saw the blues vs whites that Copuchas described well for a few minutes but for me it really highlighted the gap between the best and the newbies. Viney in particular was everywhere and just drew the ball, while a few others really pushed low percentage kicks which didn't come off. Dec Keilty did a great smother on Frost right at the start and his team were told in no uncertain terms to give him some praise. - while Kent wasn't required to push himself in the rehab group when they wound up they all had a ping at goal (you can see the 50m arc in the photo) and he nailed his from right on the boundary on the 50. I agree with the comments that he looked close. Certainly no obvious restriction.
