Sorry Old Dee, but when someone effectively states an accused is guilty before a trial they need to be criticized. This is one of our basic freedoms, fought for over centuries. If they think they can justify their medieval position by saying the legal system is screwed or comparing it to a government they don't like, then they need to go live somewhere where there is no rule of law. I doubt mjt would enjoy that unless his buddies were running the place. BTW Olisik, I don't think anyone has argued that the rules should depend on the colour of your skin. I thought people were referring to understanding an individual's circumstances. The law is the law, but if courts don't take into account an individual's circumstances, you end up transporting a starving mother for stealing a bit of bread or her kids. But you are right old dee - a spell is in order -there is little point in arguing with some people on these sorts of issues.6 points

You were there? You actually witnessed the events and can categorically state that it was Jurrah who attacked the victim? Fortunately we have a judicial system operating in this country that countenances the belief that a person is innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.5 points

I certainly have no issue with that.. what I do have an issue with however, are the likes of ThreeOneSix and mjt presuming guilt without having any of the facts available to them. If they are going to insist on one set of laws, then they must also insist on LJ's right to be judged innocent until PROVEN guilty.4 points

I'd like to invite some of the more unsavoury fools that I find either particularly unpleasant, stupid, or simply annoying to my dreamteam league. There will be no greater pleasure than tearing you a new one. Posters like Stu, Biffen (sic), Olisik, Deeluded, Franky, Bizkit, Jnrmac, Roost it, Why you, and that RP?? gherkin readily come to mind. But there are others who probably know who they are. I have many of you on ignore. Maybe you're a Greens voter. You'll do. Perhaps others inexplicably have the same view of yours truly. Probably a stretch too far. Anyway morons... Code: 2444783 points

Let me get this right. Cronulla employed some sport scientists. They then sacked their sport scientists and coaching staff because of allegations of supplement use. The same sports scientists went to Essendon and now they are under scrutiny for supplement use. Why do I get the feeling the media is taking the 'poor Essendon' approach. They are a 'victim of circumstances'. I am outraged by this approach. particularly when compared with the slime we have had to contend with for 8 months. Why aren't the media targeting Ess every day?? With new revelations? Demands for sackings? Guilty until proven innocent stories??? FMD I hate the media.3 points

Geeze, with Stuie going all mushie and on the prowl, and Rangey back with manners and reason, one might think that the heavy hand of management has straightened the joint out. Or is it just the hot weather frying a few brains?2 points

Both. The physical pressure in the AFL is enormous. It's the high intensity tackling, the speed of the game - you feel like you have a nano second to get rid of it, the defensive rolling zones that make hitting a target difficult from even 20 metres, i.e. an accurate kick can be made to look bad because often they're trying to hit a stationary target. The more games a player gets at AFL level the more he'll start to adapt to the environment. Some players perform better mentally when under pressure than others. They're cooler and can execute that kick the same they would in training, whereas others second guess themselves. The doubts creep in. Especially when they've previously had a propensity to cough it up. There's a reason why sports psychology is a profession - as you mention. I also reckon McKenzie is a little slow to react, which gets him into grief.2 points

Once again, no proof, no evidence, no basis at all for what you are saying. All I can guess is that you have a personal problem with someone at the club and you're trying to de-stabilize them/the club. I'm not unconvincable, no one is untouchable, but you have given me absolutely no reason to believe anything you're trying to say.2 points

I hope Liam gets a fair trial. He has a right to that. I have been critical of other parts of his "stardom" There is no doubt he has been used by others to a degree. But a fair trial is a right.2 points

He's in the leadership group and has won the coaches award 3 years in a row, what does that tell you? You're a dud.2 points

No doubt to tell us all that cricketers should just play and not have to worry about all that professionalism stuff. I wouldn't expect anything less. Am I the only one who couldn't GAF what the players think on issues like this one?2 points

Knowing our luck, Wines will be the greatest player of all time. Meanwhile, we'll be forever bemoaning Viney's disposal, Toumpas ends up being a poor mans Cale Morton, and Hogan becomes a 4 time All Australian centre half forward....... For Fremantle.2 points

I made the point elsewhere that although the focus this week is on Southport where the Demons take on the Gold Coast Suns, if you've developed a fondness for Casey Fields after last Saturday's NAB Cup game against the Saints, why not come back again this week for the Scorpions' first practice match v Frankston? The neighbouring Dolphins have recruited well, it promises to be a big day at Cranbourne East and the parking won't be anywhere near as bad as last week. I can't promise which of the Demons will be on show this week as the MFC will probably take up a decent squad and rest a few as well. SATURDAY MARCH 16 Casey Scorpions vs Frankston at Casey Fields DL 11am VFL 2pm However, it looks likely that some big guns will be on hand at the same venue following week (March 23) when the Scorps take on VFL heavyweights Port Melbourne and they could have a couple of handy inclusions in Mitch Clark and Jack Trengove. Demons look to VFL. Casey will round off its practice match series at home against Box Hill Hawks on 30 March.2 points

It was Pick 3/13/Barry for 20, Hogan and "for heaven's sake don't nominate Viney with #1". It wouldn't have been a verbalised or written deal, just the MFC saying "pick 3 might be up for trade", and GWS being smart enough to draw the inference that they couldn't receive it if they forced us to use it on Viney. The obvious wouldn't have needed to be said (although with the tanking deal I guess you couldn't trust the MFC not to say it anyway), so there should be nothing to spring. I maintain that Toumpas being available wasn't part of the deal, it was just an enormous stroke of luck. You wouldn't be able to make that deal without saying it -- that would be inviting trouble. Nonetheless, getting all three of Viney, Toumpas and Wines was not possible. Bottom line is that had we not traded pick 3, GWS would have forced us to take Viney with it. And I can't believe you'd wish Hogan away anyway.2 points

Arguably the best small forward in the game. He is a FA end of this year and is only 26, with Davey most likely calling it a day at the end of this season I think that we should make a play for him. He would fill a gaping hole and would give us one of the most dangerous forward lines in the game with Hogan, Dawes, Clark, Betts with some of our quick mids resting. Even if we don't get him we can force Carlton to pay overs, make them regret paying Mclean what they do.1 point

Since this is unknowable, let's just pick from the current players, and therefore we will pick the ones who will develop fastest 2013 1 Clark 2 Jones 3. Frawley 4. Trengove 5 Grimes 6. Howe 2015 1. Watts 2. Clark 3. Toumpas 4. Gawn 5. Hogan 6. Jones 2017 1. Watts 2. Hogan 3 Gawn 4 Toumpas 5 Viney 6. Clark Are the 2017 top six capable all of being in the afl top 20, and therefore form the basis of a premiership side?1 point

We did well last year so I am sure we ll do well again. We don't have much to lose and alot to gain this year really. We should also try to leverage a trade using Sylvia.1 point

First Clark, now Rioli. I see where your head's at RR. Recruit players who have their names tattooed on their backs so we can remember who they are. Cunning, very cunning.1 point

With Davey perhaps in his last year, Rioli would be a great mentor to Barry. Can't see Hawks releasing him, though.1 point

i love the idea and as Docket said we have shown we're capable of landing a couple of big ones so anything is possible. I don't think Cyril will be the one pushed out however as he is just far too valuable to the hawks, but whoever is pushed out, they will stiil very likely be a handy player.1 point

I don't think Neeld should give up on players as easily as that though, especially talented ones. Eventually he needs to be able to manage these guys into a new culture, that's his job.1 point

It seems like there's been something like this brewing for a while. Obviously there is a feeling that the culture in the team just isn't good enough and they needed to do something to show that. I don't have a problem with it. It's like Ross Lyon dropping Dal Santo and Milne in his first season for not following defensive instructions. Arthur is telling them that playing for Australia is a step up in commitment from Shield. It's also not a bad time to do it, given that the series is pretty much lost already. I agree that the team is in trouble if this action is required to correct the problem. Coaches don't pull out that card unless it's really needed.1 point

This is probably the best coverage of today's news about the trial - Liam Jurrah target in 'bid for revenge', court hears during his assault trial Remember, this part of the trial is where the prosecution and defence say what the evidence will prove. We haven't yet been presented with any evidence and for those who have already prejudged the outcome, Liam has put in a plea of "not guilty" and unless and until its proved otherwise, he is precisely that.1 point

Can we please take this political nonsense elsewhere? Self-interest is the essence of life? You can have a childlike emulation of Ayn Rand if you want to, but let's keep it off the footy board.1 point

The list is compiled by a bloke who described us last year as a " pathetic and disgusting club" . I wouldn't expect Jones to make the list even if he wins the Brownlow. Then again, who cares about his list anyway? Then again, who cares about Sheahan anyway?1 point

The definition of a "Team" has got to be The Melbourne Storm. The have it on & off the field. God i long for the day some of it rubs off on the Demons. Stripped of points for a season & still won enough games to make the finals. The Coach stays because the Storm is his team, regardless of other contract offers. Look no further for a team than the Melbourne Storm.1 point

A team is a team when members of the team self sacrifice in order to achieve the team's goals. A successful team is one where this self sacrifice is valued highly. eg. shepherding. Shepherding is the act of taking a bump or bumping in order to allow a team mate more time with the ball. It's a simple thing but allows the player with the ball more time to deliver and therefore deliver more accurately and efficiently than he would otherwise have under pressure. We bemoan lack of skills but we never do stuff like this!1 point
-
It is a great question and I am sure we can all recognise it as such not only at MFC but at our local level and even in other sports. It is interesting to me as our local squash comp does a bit of manipulation of teams each season (an equalisation process) to ensure the contests are even at each level and overall. The best ranked no 1 is given the worst no2 and the best no5 etc. We quite obviously get it wrong some times as unexpected form or injury interferes BUT I have always stated that I like to be in the best average team as we can always spring the surprise and beat a better credentialed (ranked ) team as the competition gets more even. Particularly if you can improve your worst performer by a few points it can swing the momentum for the team. SO WHATS the bloody point????? I was especially interested that in the recent champion data we had 1 elite and only 3 below average. I dont think any other team matched us. It looked to me like we may have the best average team and therefore we can make a massive change with just a small improvement. Another thing is that team work can improve disposal if a team mate makes space or shepherds off so that the player with the ball is under less pressure or the player receiving the ball has a little more time to provide a target. An individual can do it - Jack Watts seems to be able to dispose but it may be his heightened awareness and quick reflexes not merely the fact that he may avoid those pressure situations.1 point

Because of her unbridled greed, the more she has the more she wants and how she gets it doesn't matter. If she could mine Collins street and the War Memorial she would and if she could do it with cheap imported labour all the better. [censored] I have no problem with free enterprise and capitalism but there is a point where it just becomes obscene.1 point

I reckon (in theory) any team could win a flag within 5 years. Before free agency, this probably wasn't possible. In theory, you could bring two 'very good' to 'A' grade free agents into a club every year for 4 or 5 years (assuming their salary's weren't too exorbitant) and be ready for a real tilt at the flag in 4 or 5 years time. Or you can draft, trade and continue to 'develop'. Or do both well and you end up with a great list. Free agency allows you to 'fast track' your list. We didn't land any 'big fish' free agents last year (Dawes was traded for) and there might be a few reasons for that but that doesn't mean we can't land a couple of good, experienced players at years end. In my opinion, we need to bring in some decent 'ready to go' talent. We might get to 10 wins this year but to compete with the best sides we will need some real talent. Free agents cost you nothing more than their actual salary. Not sure why it's not high on the agenda for most Demon fans. Seems like a no-brainer to me. We need talent - let's go out and get 'em. We should be in ears of the agents of these players - now. Always gotta be looking ahead. You've got to spend the 9.14 million anyway - may as well pay good players. With no offence to anyone in particular on our list, I reckon most of us would let a couple of players go for 2 very good experienced midfielders. ... Stars galore in free agency list1 point
