  1. Hi All, Here is some info that may be news to some and common dog to others. But I'll share it anyway as I fly out to work tomorrow. Dont shoot the messenger. This is what I've heard first hand from people in command. The horses mouth. 1. Neelds first & foremost priority is to replace Tom Scully before anything else. The club see's Tom as a loss and are targetting a player with similar traits (on field). While Toms disposal efficiency wasnt the greatest he was quick, broke the lines & was professional. The club is actively seeking players for eg: David Mackay from Adelaide who has good skills, quick and works hard defensively. I have copped criticism for bringing up disposal efficiency in the past with posters saying it isnt relevant, well the club certainly is taking this stat seriously. What picks they will use or how they go about it I'm not sure but we did lose a #1 draft pick. 2. The club is very keen to get another power forward onboard. Whether this is through free agency, trade or draft I'm unsure but they are certainly active. A name that keeps popping up is Jesse Hogan in the U17 mini-draft. I'd say if we cant get an experienced KPF then this will be an option for the club. 3. After the above two I hear that we are keen to get 3 quality mids with the club hoping to bring 1-2 experienced heads & one being Jack Viney providing we pick him up as a second rounder. The problem being that the pickings for quality experienced mids in their mid 20's are slim pickings now. May need to rely on the draft. 4. Club is hoping for 2 free agents - but it looks like slim pickings now. This is the concerning thing for me & the club is its ok to delist the deadwood so long as you replace with better players. A lot of top draft picks and players OOC will hold no currency at trade time - thats scary. After TS replacement, KPF, 3 mids - I have no idea what the clubs intentions are, I'll leave that for you guys to discuss. Obviously I can't reel off names etc that havent been mentioned and have to be careful the way I present things but what I can say is the club is very active & have been for months & are leaving no stone unturned. Expect a few suprises if all goes well but also get worried about replacements if it doesnt pan out, the club may have no option but to rewind the clock and rebuild with kids again. The major concern is that the MFC is not attractive to players at the moment. I look forward to October but one part of me is very nervous at who we can attract/draft. We will NOT draft skinny kids, we will be after players who are ready to go Round 1, 2013 - The club knows its running out of time to keep members on side. Curve balls that I'd keep an eye on: (These are not the views of the club but my own, chinese whispers) Stef Martin to be traded. Jai Sheahan to be upgraded as a KPF prospect. Clint Bartram/Aaron Davey to retire. Jared Rivers to chase success. Royal out, Ratten in. Bruce & Junior offered a mentoring role off field. Players brought in from Adelaide, WA & Brisbane. Anyway all the best this week, I fly back to work tomorrow, dont stress out too much - its only a game remember!! PS: I dont intend to be the worlds best speller or have elite punctuation, all I do is get it in text well enough for you to read! I dont work in an office.

  2. Demonland confirms that following discussions, it has been agreed that Range Rover will explore Free Agency opportunities. The forum would like to thank and acknowledge RR for his contributions over many seasons. Rangie won the Barry Prendergast Memorial Trophy, as Best in Hindsight in 2011, 2012 and 2008. His memorable contributions include: "Why oh why doesn't my Darling love me enough to come to Melbourne", "Poll: who needs to go" (in which the options were Watts or Predergast and RR did quite well in a late surge) , "Poll: Watts or Naitanui; did we get it wrong or did we just [censored] up big time" and the all-time favourite "Demonland posters are to accepting of my polls –no more excuses." Melbourne coach Mark Neeld said, “We respect RR’s position, and the fact that he has been up front with us throughout the process, and his decision not to get on the reality bus or wear anything other than his rear view mirrored sunglasses. This is the new world of planning for the future - RR is a restricted past agent and the rules of the forum allow him to explore these opportunities and to poll everyone about them as well. We wish him well for the future past, which he loves to talk about so much.” RR said, “I have enjoyed my time at Demonland, but it’s now time to pursue other opportunities including flirting with Bomberblitz which hasn't exploited the opportunities to demolish the weapon. I am grateful for everything the Club has given me other than Pick 1 in 2008, that disastrous pick 12 for a forward and frankly just about every other pick made in between. I have built great relationships with Melbourne's recruiting staff and I wish all involved the best for their past indiscretions because they will haunt them for the rest of their lives just like I will. I am planning a short break in Perth and Fiji before I decide my next move. ”

  3. Please direct me to anyone who has said Neeld is a wonderful coach ??? I think you have misread what Neeld supporters are on about - so I will try to make it clear and I think others may support the view. Most Neeld supporters would tell you that the jury is still out on whether he can actually coach or not however what is making us (me?) support him is his no nonsense approach to players. At various stages Green,Davey, Moloney,Petterd and others have not done as required and what do you know - back to Casey they go. Best and Fairest's, leading goalkickers, captaincy and loyal service mean nothing to him - play it his way or out you go. We are now witnessing the same actions at the end of the season - Neeld has looked at players for a year and some will be in his plans going forward and others will be shown the door. Daniher at the end of his reign played favourites - great stalwarts like Jeff White who were not contributing at the end of their careers still got games. Bailey IMO was too soft on everyone. Nurturing is one thing but his approach certainly did not nurture a hard edge. So we have had a lifetime of mediocrity and in comes a coach whose message I read as "no more". We were putrid this year and I am tipping 25% of the list will be turned over. Can Neeld coach ? Who knows. What I do like is he is not going to die wondering. He will have Neeld players next year and whilst I am not expecting a finals berth I am hopeful of seeing why he has taken the approach he has. Why he has chosen not to take an easy option and give players who he doesnt see in our future more time to see how they turn out. I am sure one or two will bite us in the arse but thats football. I like the direction he is taking and look forward to all Neeld supporters getting the answer as to whether he can actually coach or not. As an addendum I am a believer that a coach may be able to get more out of a player but 95% of a player improving comes from a player wanting to get the best out of himself. To blame a coach for Petterd and Moloney stinking it up is to remove blame from where the blame should be 100% directed.

  6. It's not development, it's dud drafting. If Prendergast had done this to a European soccer club he'd be beefing up his home security. We've finally got a coach that recognises duds. If it looks like a dud, smells like a dud, plays like a dud, it's in all likelihood a dud. I'm enjoying seeing these duds on the chopping block. It's the happiest I've been all season.

  7. i work as a manager with a team of seven. when i took on the job, there were a few that had bad attitudes and no matter what didnt want to adapt into a new regime. it was a cancer that spread and the morale of the whole team was at an all time low. over time i managed out the ones with a bad attitude and brought in people with the right spark and who beleived in what we were doing. The team is now florishing and the hard moves have paid off. i have seen too many years of us accepting mediocity and i firmly believe that these hard decisions will set us on the right path. go dees.

  10. Neeld has had a year to work out the lie of the land. We've already seen in the last draft what Neeld value highly when he drafted Taggert, Tynan and Sellar - hardness and athleticism. In other words, the ability to compete. Cook is a wonderfully skilled player who makes great decisions when you deliver him the ball. The problem is that he's slow and not a physically dominant player. Not a good combo because it means that you have a lot of trouble competing. Gysberts has some of the best inside hands I've seen at Melbourne for a while, but is not athletic at all. It just means that he struggles to spread and struggles to get to contests and compete - which is important for Neeld. Compare that with him wanting to keep Bate - strong and a really good runner. Neeld just found out, after coaching him, that he wasn't good enough. But there was a definite reason why he kept him.

  11. I find it funny that people are having a whinge that Neeld couldn't get the best out of Ricky. How about Ricky gets the best out of Ricky? Given that he couldn't cement a spot under at least 2 different coaches when plenty of others did, surely the player has to take responsibility for his own shortcomings eventually.

  12. There were two surprising points in that article: one, that it said we are to turn ver as many as 10 players this offseason (I wouldn't put a ceiling on it); and two, that nine clubs are interested in Cook, presumably mistaking him for a chef.

  14. If the yarn is true and Petterd is on the way out, then best of luck to him and hopefully he can land at another club and find the success that eluded him at MFC. My question to you is why would so many players re-sign this year if was Neeld is so thoroughly on the nose? Howe, Jones, McKenzie, Jamar, Blease, McDonald, Tapscott etc all chose to stay this year when all of them would have some measure of currency on the trade market. Neeld rides Blease harder than just about anybody else from all reports, yet he re-signed. The issue here is Petterd, and for that matter any player that is determined to be incapable of taking the club towards consistent finals footy. Neeld isn't the issue. Clearly, time will tell if Neeld is a good coach at AFL level. We can't say that for sure at the moment. For the time being, Neeld and the rest of the MFC footy department (it's not just him) are doing what I expect a competent footy department to be doing. He and the rest of the staff have had a long look at the list they inherited and they are currently deciding which players are going to take the club forward. The footy department have also set high standards for performance on gameday and on the training track, and it seems that some players are unable to meet those standards. Just who those players are will come out in the wash after the trade period is done and the list lodgements have been made. The MFC footy department should make no apologies for doing these things. It's harsh on the players that don't make the cut because their lives are turned upside down, but it's life in a professional sporting organisation. All players know the risk when they get involved.

  15. Toumpas, or O'Rourke would replace Scully. I can wait a year for Hogan. He'll be 19 for the start of 2014 with a body ready to go. He already makes Watts look like a toothpick. They don't call him the man-child for nothing. And if he's as good as many believe he'll hold down CHF for a decade. You can build a side around that sort of player. At pick 13 you may decide on a player like Stringer who'll be ready to play in the AFL from day one. Viney second round would cap off a great draft irrespective of later picks. Jesse Hogan: Jake Stringer: Do you think these two beasts can fit into Neeld's plans ? Not to mention the body of Jack Viney, who'll play as a 19 year old next year and be even bigger after a preseason: We have a chance to massively change our club in one draft if we get it right. And these are top-line "J's" that may replace ordinary "J's". Jimmy Toumpas, Jonathan O'Rourke, Jesse Hogan, Jake Stringer and Jack Viney. One of Toumpas or O'Rourke, plus Stringer and Viney would run out in round one next year. And if it's not Stringer they'll be other quality picks ready to go at pick 13.

  16. Thanks for that, all sounds very reasonable. Would love to get Ratten back. I was always a fan, and was personally told by players that he was an awesome midfield coach when he was at Melbourne. And lets hope that our Scully replacement comes with not just better disposal, but also better moral judgement and without a fat father.

  17. Richmond retired and delisted 12 players (plus one rookie) at the end of 2009, from the crapola-Wallace era. Just about all were NQR list-cloggers. One was their 2005 #5 pick (Oakley-Nicholls). Then in 2010 they traded out their 2004 #4 pick in Tambling. It doesn't seem to have affected their long-term prospects, in fact quite the reverse.

  19. I gotta say that this is disappointing. Not only did we stuff up the draft selection, we clearly failed to develop Cook, and now it seems Neeld doesn't want to invest another year or two in this kid. I suppose if you don't have it you don't have it, but we've persisted with so many poor players who we knew were never going to make it, like Bate (who Neeld insisted on keeping), and yet we won't give Cook an extra pre-season under Mission. I have no issue with the clean out, but to get rid of kids like Cook and possibly Gysberts for such a low return, is not going to leave us much better off. The chances of picking a good player with the third or fourth round pick we'll get for Cook, is close to zero.

  20. Redleg is so disillusioned as to contemplate giving football away. Here's a suggestion: give Demonland away. Fair dinkum, it is more depressing than the football. Firstly Olisik bags out the impassioned and upset Grand New Flag, rubbishing him for his spelling errors. Olisik goes on to then omit both his own apostrophes. We just sit through this, reading it all. Olisik implies if not actually says that Grand New Flag's posts are trash. And we all read it, giving space in our frustrated and disappointed MFC memory to one poster describing another's post as trash while he commits the same errors that he bags the other out for. This crap is worse than sitting through the footy. Secondly, Olisik claims that Grand New Flag's examples do not help his case, and asks "how did Jurrah go backwards under Neeld?" Well, it surely cannot be disputed that Jurrah went backwards this year, or that quite a few others did too. There is widely expressed concern that Neeld has not been at all inclined to show either sensitivity or flexibility in his handling of Jurrah or a number of others; does Grand New Flag have to spell out the supposed connection between Neeld's narrow approach to coaching and the underperformance of Jurrah (among others), to avoid being trashed by the likes of Olisik? How can Olisik pretend to be unaware of the supposed connection between Neeld's coaching style and the lacklustre, unenthusiastic and un-instinctive play of so many at Melbourne this year? Why do we sit through such pretend arguing? Olisik could have chosen to argue that Jurrah's going backwards is not attributable to Neeld, and obviously could have made a case for this, or he may have chosen to argue that not cutting any slack to the Jurrah's of the club is a good thing regardless of the consequences - but he didn't. That would have been interesting - obviously, Neeld is stirring up all sorts of people, and there will be a cost associated with bringing in the changes that he has in mind. Different people will have different views about whether the balance is right or not. I would be interested to hear the different points of view properly set out. I know what I feel about it, but I come onto Demonland in the hope of seeing a range of opinions. Many of us were upset when Travis Johnstone was let go - we needed to hear other points of view before we got what we ended up believing was a balanced understanding of the whole thing. Supporters like that kind of discussion, we like to find out... But Olisik did not engage in debate - he just bagged out Grand New Flag, with schoolteacherly nitpicking and "tis not" argument. (Olisik, if you can't debate, don't make a fool of yourself strutting yourself like this! And me - get smart: if you are too frustrated by the people posting here, don't read it!) What can we make of Olisik's "thirdly"? He does what he bagged Grand New Flag for doing, calls him a troll for raising his concerns in what looked to me like a sincere and reasoned expression of real opinions, accuses him of repeating himself (!!!), and hints that perhaps Olisik (unlike Grand New Flag) knows what goes on inside the club. I want to know who is the "well-known players (sic) manager" that Grand New Flag cites - that's a question worth asking, and Demonland appears to have a "put up or shut up" attitude to posters citing unnamed authorities. Perhaps someone might apply this rule to Olisik's last statement - tell us, Olisik, or shuttup trying to look like you have inside information and contacts that you don't have. But, having read Grand New Flag's post, I think the question should at least be asked of him - what manager? what players? If there is substance in this allegation, it would surely strengthen Demon supporters' concerns about the coach. If the coach is making catastrophic mistakes, a supporters' site like this one could well be the forum on which a groundswell of members' angst would build until it put pressure on the club - and if that is needed, then presumably it would be a good thing. But instead of rational analysis and discussion, we get this posturing abusive ignorance... There are a number of regular loudmouths on Demonland who leap to the attack, taking over threads, with all the conviction of the proven authority on whatever subject is being discussed. They tolerate no opinions other than their own. They do not appear to value their fellow Melbourne supporters unless those fellow Melbourne supporters agree with them. And ... I hesitate to say this, but it does appear to be true ... these opinionated and adamant-on-every-subject merchants all love Neeld.. See you later, gang. Without Demonland, I just might saddle up again next year.

  21. Poor old Rick was asked to play in a position that suited his skill set and that he was recruited to play in? He played what I reckon had to be the worst 4 senior games imaginable this year. Playing on the half forward line didn't seem to be a tale of woe last year or the year before and our mids were rubbish then too. If he can't play in the role we need him for, I don't see the point in wasting time and effort stuffing about trying him in other spots. On which "numerous" occasions did he show he could play? I reckon of his 54 games not more than one in 5 of them would have been "par". It's embarassing for Petterd that he's been shown the door while we're still debating whether or not to keep Dunn. That speaks volumes about where he's at. As far as I'm concerned, he's just another ordinary NQR that has been sent packing. Definitely no lost sleep here.

  23. Neeld is, it seems, a man of his word. What this means is that we won't be signing any more duds looking for an easy ride. Players that choose to come to Melbourne will be those who understand what it takes and who are prepared to give their all. There will be a clear understanding out there that to pull on the red and blue means you will be held to account. I'm sure there are plenty of players out there who will relish the opportunity to be part of a club that is clear about its intention to be successful.

  24. HG, interesting stuff as usual. You noted early in the season, and again more recently that Neeld had gone very hard early on and may well have 'lost' some players. I shared those concerns early on, was prepared to wait and see but certainly he took a pretty full on approach that carries a great deal of risk. But i have changed my mind on this recently. I suspect that Neeld knew right from the get go he would be ruthless with cutting players etc at the end of this season and i think had a pretty good idea how few players were up to his requirements. Cutting Cook (which i just found out about and was pretty bloody surprised about - but it is an incredibly gutsy call) is an example of how ruthless he will be. Given this, a full on approach perhaps was necessary - no point building strong relationships with players who you are going to axe, in no small part due the risk they might want to stay (eg Moloney). If that means losing someone like Rivers then so be it. Perhaps he was prepared to be hated by his players (and perhaps even feared) if that is what it takes to turn this club around. Taking that approach takes some courage, particulalry as a first time coach who if he fails at Melbourne may well never coach senior footy again. One presumes he has the backing of the board with this approach. This is a root and branch rebuild and it is absolutely necessary. He can start building a strong interpersonal relationship with his acolytes, a point made well by a poster somewhere in this thread. He needs a team who play for him and do whatever is asked of him. A team of Neeldbots. As you point out a there are massive risks with this approach, not least of which being not getting good enough players but also that enough players won't buy in. But in my view it would be a greater risk to keep any players on the list who are not 100% committed to Neeld's vision. This is such a crucial trading period. I share your concerns but perhaps am a little more confident about our capacity to attract senior players as i suspect some players will be sold by Neeld's fanaticism, despite the rumblings of discontent from exiting and even some players who are staying. I'm sure also that the thoroughness you talk about will net us a WAFL, VFL or SANFL player who will come straight into the side and buy into the Neeld regime.

  26. Thrilled that Barry Prendergast knew more than every Demonlander, who predicted we would take Talia with the pick 11 we got from Carlton for Brock. WJ and I nearly fainted when we went to a function on draft night and Chris Connolly told us we would not take Talia, but instead would take Gysberts. Talia has won the rising star and looks an AA and star for 10 years. Gysberts is being spoken of as being traded. How much was he paid for being our head recruiter? I know it is easy to have hindsight but most of us had foresight on this occasion. Now we hear about Gysberts deficiencies as the reason he may go. I won't mention Cook/Darling as other have. Why were other clubs shocked at some of our selections? It just makes you sick, thinking about it.

  28. After hearing Mark Neeld talk mid season I was expecting to see Lucas Cook debut by the end of the year, I got the impression that Cook was being given the chance to step up. Let's face it, we've been desperate for a forward - any forward - since we lost Clarky, so the opportunity was there for him to take. So I'm not really surprised to see him handed his cards. Interesting times we live in, Mark Neeld is starting to resemble Homer Simpson coaching little league...cut cut cut!!

  29. The reason these guys struggled is they don't possess the burning desire to be the best. That is what Neeld is looking for in his players. Don't blame the coach for the players lack of accountability blame the individuals. Moloney was never more than a plodder, Petterd's played 3 good games for the club, Morton was a terrible pick and Jurrah's had the year from hell. He's the only one I'm sad to see go. He could've been anything. As for Cook and Gysberts, well who cares? We have been average for so long it's ridiculous. This is the first time I remember a coach having the balls to [censored] off the deadwood and I f or one will back him for the next 24 months.

  30. Reality bus coming through guys... Have you seen the free agency list? Not as impressive as you may think, and we've already lost at least 5 players who we have to replace with someone. I'd take Goddard in a heartbeat. We're going to need to fill at least 10 spots, and we don't have that many draft picks. I'd love to get a superstar to our club, but the reality of where we are and the availability of said superstars will keep our hands tied somewhat. We all love Mitch, but even he wasn't a superstar when we went for him. It's pretty obvious from Neelds statements that we will be going after some senior bodies. I for one am sick of this "won't be part of our next premiership" stuff. We need senior bodies to bring through the guys that WILL be a part of this supposed "next premiership", otherwise we'll never get there.

He had a poor patch in the middle of the season and he needs to work on his delivery when under pressure but I think he has some good attributes and there's a lot more development in him. I'd keep.

  33. Jaded this is not a go at you but I am really tired of the "did not develop" argument. It is trotted out for every draft failure. The New FD has had 12 months with Cook. They have made their decision based on the facts they see close up. It confirms my opinion and numerous others. The kid is struggling to be Casey standard. There are plenty of failures in high draft picks. EG Thorpe at Hawthorn, high draft pick. The hawks could not "develop" him and were is he now? It is not always " failure to develop a player" Some do not make it from Juniors to AFL level. Poor Choice lets get on with it.

  36. As some here have highlights, timD the best, the issue of process is a club wide thing, not just to do with selecting a senior coach, and is a representation of the attitude and approach of the entire club to all manner of issues. In terms of process, I am not sure how a CEO can be sacked one week and then be saved by another person losing their job, and then be reappointed for three years 12 months later. If this CEO was deemed by the Board to not be good enough one week, how can the same Board deem him worthy of being in charge of our football club through what will be possibly the leanest period in it's history? Again in terms of process, I have reservations about our selection of a senior coach. I don't have any issue with the Ross Lyon one because it was done by Fremantle and Ross in an underhanded manner and not only would I not want our club to act in that manner, I'm not sure about the motivations of someone who says one thing to his management then deals with someone else behind their back. My issue is more with why there were three other coaching jobs available and ultimately of the three people to get those jobs, not a single one was interviewed by us. It suggests a major flaw in our identification of potential applicants for the job if all three who would go through processes and be successful at other clubs would not even be considered by us. Someone said it before - it's not about whether Neeld is a good coach or not, it's about whether he was the right man for the job, and did we look thoroughly enough before his appointment. To me, not interviewing any of McCartney, Sanderson or Watters is a giant red flag that there is a problem. Now if there are questions about the handling of the appointment of the CEO and the Senior Coach, logically the next step is to wonder about the appointment or review processes to do with other important areas - admin staff, football department staff, assistant coaches, list management etc

  42. Why join Melbourne.... Join Melbourne because we are serious about becoming an elite club. The standards being set at Melbourne mirror the standards required to succeed. Come to Melbourne and get the best out of your god given talents because no longer does mediocrity live here. We have Neeld, Craig, Mission etc they know what an elite program looks like. At the moment everyone is crying because Melbourne is going through a hard prune. Our old flowers (and some young buds) have or will be cut. But guess what, after a hard prune the whole plant grows back bigger and stronger. The action starts now...and in my eyes it would be alot easier to convince players to come and buy into the new pro-active Melbourne than the old wait and see Melbourne. The Melbourne FC will no longer be the club where near enough is good enough...only players with the desire to give there all will be retained and recruited....i like the sound of the new Melbourne. Thats why i believe that players will want to come to Melbourne.

I don't expect we'll pick up much experienced talent this draft To axe him next year would just be too much turmoil and given that the board has given him the ok to wield the axe not enough time to measure progress I expect many will be calling for blood next year but he will see out at least his contracted 3 years End of 2014 will be a MFC watershed and not just for the coach

  44. I agree. Gysberts has shown he can play. Had a shocking run with injuries, but has a huge upside if developed properly - coaches have that responsibility

  46. yep, we could've and should've taken Darling. I remember the exact moment when we read out Cook's name on the radio, which lead me to say in shock "woooaaahhhhh", i knew right then and there that we had stuffed that pick up. Thanks again Barry, also wanted to get Talia with pick 11 in the '09 draft. I know we all think we are expert recruiter's, but i honestly think i would have chosen better prospects than BP did, which goes to show how [censored] of a recruiting manager he was.

  47. This is pretty impressive so far, good to see drastic action. I'm liking Neeld more and more, he's going to make a real football club out of the MFC.

  48. Many are tempted to cringe at the downside, the recent batterings, the bad press and all of that. Yet , how many teams have the potential upside we have. Weve got the people, we've got the resources ( now ) weve got a no nonsense coach whos going to demand the best of you ( potential incomer) Heres a team where you WILL get the chance to spread your wings should you have the ability and ambition. We're a very proud club thats been hurting, but we're coming back. Those who jumnp on are in for one hell of a ride. Fortune faviours the brave. No wimps need apply !!
