  1. I have actually restrained myself from posting in any of the topics from the last couple of days, some of which I find very hard to believe, and I don't want to be banned Saturday, in Mountain View pub, surrounded by supporters of both Essendon and Richmond, myself and my partner left at half time, our choice, but will be back at the G this Sunday to support our team, we always will If you have had enough of supporting Melbourne, THEN DON'T, it is that simple, it is a game of footy, nobody dies, some of the posters really do need to take a look at themselves and at what they have posted, some of the personal attacks have been rude, obnoxious, libelous, defammatory etc etc But of course you can hide behind a 'nickname', safe in the knowledge that you will not be confronted by a highly embaressed, [censored] off, angry player who is looking for somebody to hit to take out the frustration they feel, if I was one Jack Watts this is what I would be looking to do I have no idea what is wrong with the team at the moment, but we have a Board, Administration and Footy Dept who will give it their best shot to get it right, everything changes. It may be the players, coaching staff etc, only those involved have any real idea, I have an opinion but I will not thrust it down everybody's throats as the truth which is what happens on this board I love this 'impeccable source', if you are a player/administrator etc of MFC, come out from behind your nickname and say so, if you don't it is rumour, innuendo or hearsay......the only impeccable source we have on this board is Cam Schwab when he comes on here to kill off some other ridiculour rumour, check the posts you will find them I actually support Everton in the EPL, every year we have an horrendous start, but eventually get it together, we have not actually won anything major for a while, but you can see that is changing....and we will .and the Club has had the balls to stand by Manager David Moyes through everything coz they can see the future, but they have done it with integrity and not sold out Stick with MFC, we will get there

  2. 11) After a round 10 defeat to Essendon drops the Demons to 0-10, the club holds a colouring competition open to the members whereby the winner gains a spot on the playing list. Plucked from obscurity, a random poster from Demonland named pantaloons wins the competition and surprisingly gains selection for the Queen's Birthday clash, where he kicks 10 goals on debut and leads the club to victory. More heroics ensue, and the Demons rattle off an improbable 12 straight wins and an unlikely finals berth on the back of young pantaloons' 103 goals and Coleman Medal from the forward pocket. More zany action ensues in the finals, where the club reaches the Grand Final after three straight wins by less than a kick, including a goal after the siren against Hawthorn in the prelim. The club then defeats West Coast in the Grand Final by 120 points and followed that up by using pick 22 on Jack Viney. The end.

  3. I cannot comprehend how anyone thinks Neeld should be sacked this year let alone believes it might happen. I know we have all been kicked in the guts but get a grip on reality.

  4. Fan, I understand your point here about why the players may be performing like this now, but that doesn't excuse the last 10-15 years. In all that time we have always had players who seem to be front runners, who only run one direction, who lay on the ground looking for free kicks instead of getting up and chasing. Essendon in 2000 didn't do this. Brisbane the next three years didn't do this. We have had a player culture at our club for far too long which was never going to make us successful. Talent doesn't get you there, hardwork and committment does. This is why ALL the senior players (bar Junior) were moved on. All thought they were better than they were, and while they may have been great servants of the club, that doesn't mean they were going to be the players to lead us forward. The fact that none of our players had further careers at other clubs speaks volumes for the fact that we made the right call. Junior was a mistake, and I believe that decision was based on the clubs opinion of his body coping with another season, not to do with other factors. Stirling Mortlock's presence at the Melbourne Rebels this year has been an example of why Junior should have been retained. When Hawthorn hit rock bottom, who did they turn to to lead them? Richie Vandenberg, a no frills, but uncompromising player. He wasn't their best player, or their flashiest, but he set an example, he worked hard, and he did the right things. I completely agree with your point about the players being human, and feel sorry for them. I love watching them, and I've shared in their highs and lows all my life, but can anyone really point out a player who was moved on too early, other than Junior? There has been a lot of hate for the coaches and love for the players lately, and that really surprises me. I've made the following observations, and these are what tells me that the problem is with the players. I may have missed some obvious things, so happy to discuss if anyone has any observations other than "we've gone backwards" because that is clearly for other reasons. - Whenever we get smashed (pretty much every loss) the players with the worst stats are normally a bunch of senior players. Check out Davey, Green, Jamar, Sylvia this week. Even Moloney was down on his usual output. These players are rarely seen to work hard in games we aren't winning. Ablett, Hodge, Hayes, Ball, etc still play well when their sides lose. Our 'senior' players lie down. - We have a virtually whole new footy deptartment this year. The new coaches had 3 months to watch the players and work out who they thought were the leaders. They chose to disregard almost all of the existing 'leaders'. Clark, a newbie to the club, was judged a leader. Jones was the only player retained in that group. No one could dispute the onfield leadership shown by these two this year, but I would argue that Green, Davey, Moloney and Jamar haven't shown any. And they didn't show much most of last year either did they? - The new conditioning staff (Misson and Craig) have repeatedly stated how poor our fitness levels were. We were doing half of the other clubs conditioning. Even this season we couldn't do a full load pre-season. This shows on the field. Time may prove Neeld to be a poor choice for head coach, but you cannot convince me that between Neeld (Collingwood), Misson (St Kilda and Sydney) and Craig (Adelaide) time at successful clubs, the three of them could be the problem? All were highly rated at successful clubs. If one wasn't good enough, I could believe it, but to suggest that the coaching panel is all wrong and that the players are write is preposterous. - How hard is the game plan? OK, I know it is different. I undersatand there will be mistakes. I also understand it is the job of the coaches to teach. But our players seem unable to run with their man and cut off the option. We are loose and lazy. We don't work hard enough. You can only carry so many players, and at the moment we are carrying ALL of the senior players. The current coaching panel has been put in place to turn around the culture of the club. For those young enough and willing enough, they can all be part of the next tilt, but if you aren't up to it you'll find yourself out of there. Remember, Cameron Bruce was one of our fittest, and one of our best trainers, and he looked average at Hawthorn. Every player that has left for another club has talked about how professional they are etc.compared to Melbourne. If we don't have the senior players to lead the change, like they did at Hawthorn and Geelong, then we need the coaches to lead the way. McLardy's statement didn't seem like much, and Presidents often backflip, but I feel his move was to quell the rumours of coach sacking. He backed the FD and hung the responsibility on the players. If the players don't want to perform, they will be out of there at seasons end. The group that wants it (see the leadership group) will stay and make it happen. Edit: spelling

  5. Very easy to dismiss Ox's comments by those who don't listen to him or respect his opinion. Yet many blame administrations and coaching when time and again the very players Ox is referring to are the very reason we end up getting belted time and again. Yet when they turn up against the like of StKilda they're seen as competitive. He was sick of seeing players decide to turn it on when they want to. I am with him on this.

  6. The 'boys' should give their 'heart and soul' because they have been bestowed with the honour of representing the Melbourne Football Club. Then there's the small matter of the $400k/year they're getting to lace up their frickin boots. If they want to protest ... fine go and and have a whinge and protest. But first hand your jumper back and your match payments.

  8. I agree with the notion that our young players need the physical support, but are they actually getting the physical support? I don't see a reason why you couldn't play Bate, Magner and Couch in the middle of the ground and have those bodies absorb the punishment that Moloney and Sylvia would otherwise cop. It's not exactly a Class A midfield, but I can't see it performing any worse than the one we've got going now. I also can't see how Sylvia's position is even remotely tenable in the current side and Moloney isn't far behind. The only thing that might change my mind is that we've got another run of top teams so perhaps we might spare a few younger players the psychological impost of being mauled by good teams. Man, I yearn for the days when Moloney was a flat track bully.

  9. RR - I suspect I'll come in for some criticism here, but I think Davey is trying. I just think the game's moved beyond him a bit. I'd play him wholly in our forward 50 and instruct him just to effect tackles, nothing more.

  10. It's time to stop the rot. Sylvia, Moloney, Davey et al must be told their services are no longer required at the Melbourne Football Club. Starting this Thursday night send them packing to Casey for good. Precious, self-absorbed, overpaid sooks who have clearly already got one foot out the door. Enough is enough Neeldy. Drop these chumps!

  11. I have just finished watching the press conference with Jack Grimes. Very impressed. He stood there and took all questions - easy, tough and stupid (and yes, some of the questions by the journos were sooo dumb). He might be young but his character strength is the steadiest, most upfront leadership I have seen since Junior was pushed aside. Maybe we got the right man for the job?!?

  12. Finally a thread on the issue that seems to make sense! I fully support most of the views expressed here. We need to support the Neeld regime 100% until we drag ourselves up from the floor, climb the ladder and banish the lack of belief that has engulfed the players (whether the brutal honesty of Neeld contributed or not). The whole club, including the supporters, need to stick fat and go the distance... I will accept a change of direction if we show no growth by the beginning of 2013.

  13. TPM ... don't get sucked in by this nonsense. The tabloids want a coach sacking and they will angle for one any which way they can when they smell a bit of blood in the water. The bigger story for them of course would be the demise of a Victorian AFL club as it's something they could document and run with for months and even years until it happens. North were in the gun there for a while and now you sense the crosshairs are being switched over to us. We must back our man Neeld. As players. As administrators. As supporters. We must back him.

  15. "to be honest, I wouldn't care less if Cale Morton or Jack Watts confronted me. Both have the intimidation equal to Nikki Webster" Puffing out your keyboard again. I personally don't look at stats, I just want to see them have a crack, if they don't I walk away disappointed but front up the next week anyway, last time I looked the game was played by young guys who beneath the guernsey are human beings This is not aimed at you Freak in particular But if you are somebody who feels the need to continually whinge, berate, criticise, belittle etc, then you do really need to look inwards first I am all for venting one's frustrations, but criticism is much better received if it is constructive, and as I have said in other topics, unless behind your nickname you are a player of 1 to 200 games of AFL football or you have coached at that level....what would you know? I am prepared and waiting to be enlightened

  16. Ox said the best thing I have heard about Melbourne in recent days: ''At the moment, there are Melbourne players going out there being very happy to be playing for the club on their terms. At the moment, if Melbourne players want to go out there, be selfish and do it their way, well, they can go, they can leave the club,'' he said. ''The way it sits right now is that we have a new coach who has come into the system, is trying to reorganize and dismantle what was before him, put together a new game plan and, for that, the players have to fit into the way he wants to play. ''Whether you like the coach or not, or think the coach can coach or not, is irrelevant. It doesn't stop a player from having a dip.

  17. FCS Jaded, we didn't fire them or publicly humiliate them - we moved them from leadership positions they failed miserably in. And of course, no-one wants to play for a loser but you have to have faith that most Demons can see the money we have pumped into the FD and the responsibility that we have given to the next generation and realise that the future is rosier than the past. In terms of 'dignity' with decision making - is there ever a good way to tell senior players their time is up when they don't think it is? Is there an easy way to remove a failing coach the players adore? Is there a dignified way to remove the captain and the LG? We have made some hard decisions in the last 10 months and our predicament is far from proof they have been poor decisions. Immediate term they look disastrous, but I want to see whether this time will be the making of the club. We all judged Hawthorn as thugs when Brereton pointed out a line he saw in the MCG sandpit, but along with a hardworking captain and a clean out of underperforming senior players, it instilled in a young team a tougher mind and resolve that helped them turn their fortunes around. This club requires a cultural reconstruction and if this time gives us a hard and uncompromising edge then so be it.

  19. David King endorses this thread. Don't know if anyone caught his performance on AFL Insider. What an absolute dope of an individual. Reminded me why I don't watch the show. - Said Neeld was the wrong appointment because he wasn't the right fit for the club and the list, but couldn't specify who would be the right fit or why. Continued to use the 8 and a half wins last season as evidence the wrong decision was made. - Said the club needed to act swiftly to fix "the problem", but couldn't specify what that act should be. - Said the club should do a review of its operations to identify "the problem", completely oblivious to any review having already taken place. - Claimed that the club was not acknowledging there was a problem. President and captain have done exactly that. - Implied that the club could go under in a couple of years time due to sponsors and members jumping off. Just hysterical nonsense from start to finish, and Fox try to tout this bloke as a brilliant footy brain. He's a complete imbecile.

  20. Possible contributor to our predicament, but not the explanation. The explanation has been evident for 5 bloody years, yet still people act as if it's some sort of revelation! I've maintained for a long time now -- we will not be competitive until the substantard older players are gone, and Jones, Frawley, Grimes, etc have become our older experienced senior players. Bailey was not the reason we were bad. But as time went by, it became clear that he was not the man to bring us out of this. Neeld has walked into this. And he already has shown to be the right man for the job in many ways, more than most others could.

  21. I think that the all the major problems started with the sacking of Junior at the end of 2010. After very loyal service he was pushed out when as it turns out he had still plenty to offer. A number of the senior players thought if they can do that to Junior what can happen to me? almost imediately after we saw the fracture with Cam Bruce. Both these guys were long term loyal players who had given everything to the MFC. IMO it all stems from there, who was behind all that I do not know But for me the club has not been the same since that day at the end of the 2010 season.

  22. I'm not talking about replacing Moloney and Sylvia with kids, I'm talking about replacing them with Couch (who is no kid - make no mistake, he was recruited because he has a man's body) and Bate. I know it sounds a bit crazy - me from 2011 is currently wetting himself with laughter at the notion of replacing Sylvia with Bate, but I just want players who compete. I agree that it's not going to affect the result as ultimately you're replacing them with inferior players, but at least you get players who will put in the effort required and do the work required. It's just about setting the standard more than anything.

  23. I hope the ones who Mark have lost is Moloney and Davey; that way it'll be easier to delist them come years end. I happen to know unequivocally that Mark has exceptional support of the players and his coaching compared to Baileys is far far more educational and hands on. From my source who is a current player is that the past few weeks they have been training the house down, he told me in the Bulldogs game that we'll win if we play like we trained but it's just not happening on the field at the moment. Sometimes it just takes some time for the training track drills to make sense in the real game and it appears to be that way currently. We have a few patches of good play re 1st quarter v Hawks but we lose our way. It'll come together, but people calling out Mark Neeld are really just ignorant buffoons.

  24. I think its mainly moloney who is bullying his co workers in the midfield, someone should show this guy some workplace bullying videos. of course no1 will perform with someone spraying you every second. Sylvia should also be dropped coz his a lazy pretty boy. He reminds me of zoolander working in the coal mines this guy.

  25. I am also happy to see them all go, but I am not happy for Trengove to keep getting smashed and lose whatever little confidence he has left, because he is 20 and surrounded by 27 year olds with no leadership skills. I am not happy for McDonald, Grimes and Frawley to see 197 forward entries because our midfield is not even physically mature enough to contest a ball up. I am not happy for Howe , Watts and Blease to keep playing in losing teams. I am not happy for Clark to get injured in the ruck. And I am definitely not happy to lose by 20 goals to Carlscum. There is two sides to every story. We can punish the senior players, and we should, but then we also need to understand that by doing so, we are also punishing the younger players who desperately need the physical support and the experience. We may not see the value in these players, but they do.

  27. Looks like Roos and Sheahan liked my question Daisy and McLardy's response was damning. Not his fault, he just didn't want to tell the truth. IMO the club has handled the older players so poorly it's no surprise they haven't "bought in". The organization has ostracised the older players and particularly last years leadership group. We all know they had limitations but under Bailey they did as well as their ability allowed and the playing group were united and commited. When McLardy and Stynes interviewed the leadership group leading into the Geelong match the leaders spilled their guts on Schwab, Connolly and one or two others. They supported Bailey. McLardy listened, thanked them and acted. Schwab would not be extendedand Bailey was likely to be. This all changed post 186 and Bailey and a few others who were in the Bailey camp were dumped and in Bailey's case in the worst of ways. The playing group and leadership group in particular felt responsible. The players are not "politically savvy". They thought they were doing the right thing. But they have, almost to a man, been dumped and humiliated by the current football department. Their loyalty to the club has counted for nothing. No wonder Moloney, Green, Davey and to a lesser extent Rivers are shadows today and their older mates like Jamar and Sylvia impacted as well. You reap what you sow. The FD lost the respect of those players and I can understand why. MFC have a history of treating its older players very poorly. And please don't come back with "but they're professionals". They are humans with all the feelings and reactions that go with it. They've been told they're not wanted. What did you expect?

  28. Cannot fathom the scattergum crap that Jack has copped from thread to thread in the last couple of days. He was asked to play a role and did it incredibly well. 8 D50 rebounds, 12 contested possessions, 22 uncontested, 11 marks with two of those contested. He regularly filled holes and tried very hard in a position he wouldn't have played in at all. I understand that we didn't draft him to be a loose man in defence, but a 21 lead up forward is not going to get near it when we have 30 terrible I50s a game. Those criticising him after that game simply look like people who have made their mind up on Jack for the time being and will not let facts sway their belief. But in all the gloom - Watts did well, Blease did well, and thank Christ for Mitch Clark and Nathan Jones.

  29. This line of argument is nonsense. So only those who have played AFL are qualified/allowed to provide comment? Seriously...

  30. This has to be the most incredibly short sighted, delusional idea I have seen on this board. If I hadn't moved to Tasmania just before Round 1, I would be at every game in Melbourne, every week, sitting in my seat in N49. Regardless of the beatings and the disappointment. "Every heart beats true for the red and the blue...." If those words don't make an impact, stop pretending to "support" the Melbourne Football Club and walk away. But don't try and take other people with you or poison them with your negativity.

  31. I don't think any player doesn't try......I also think it is very hard to change your whole playing style in one preseason I think that our senior players have been playing the way they play for ten years or more and then asked to change to a complely different style and believe that they are a little lost out there at the moment.......I also don't believe that they are sulking or not buying in. I know I will get shouted down in this belief but the whole team looks lost and are trying to do the right thing by the coaching staff and when you are unsure about change it looks like you are not trying.....ie....Do I go?....do I stand by my man and defend?....What am I supposed to do with it when I get it?....Indecision....Opps to late....... Just a thought????

  32. Just saw this on the Age: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/deecision-on-the-run-20120521-1z1di.html So the assertion is that he picked us because we moved first. The other assertion - without it being explicit - is that the other clubs were probably not going to select him (and that Melbourne were the only ones that did not do some testing). It annoys me no end that the club would even say that we were in a hurry to appoint someone. It undermines the appointment, no matter if it is true. We should just say we were rapt to get him, think he is the best thing for the club and thats it. Why do we open ourselves up to interpretive journalism that when crafted the way Carro puts it (accurate or not) makes us look like we are amatuers playing against professionals. I reckon we remain steadfast in our support for Neeldy and make sure we rid this club of pea hearted wimps. Football is a tough industry, losing is hard, life is hard. Lets learn from everything and get bloody better.

  33. We don't know that is the case Cudi_420, but as GT mentions, again, there may be some signs of players not buying into new playing instructions, and players looking after their own self interest. Deciding for themselves what is best for them and not their teammates and when to contest. It's up to the coach to get everyone pulling in the same direction. If there are one or two strays cut 'em loose to Casey. Until such time they buy in and meet the demands put in front of them. It will be a long frustrating season, we may not have wanted that prior to the season but we've got what we've got still seeing a young side bereft of strong leadership finding its way with new direction. Neeld IMO needs to make a few big calls this week and stay the course. Moloney, Sylvia and Davey would be very lucky to get a game v Carlton in my opinion.

  35. Unfortunately I think this entire saga is more indicative of the club than of certain players. A lot of people stop short of the leaders and tell them to [censored] off if they don't like the situation, without really knowing what's happening, or even asking why it is they are the way they are. The way I see it, a football club is no different than any other organisation. You have young people coming in with undergraduate education -- in the case of footballers: underage, amateur-level football -- and you need to educate these people about the level of professionalism dictated by an organisation run by adults. If someone comes into the club and concludes that the current leadership group is not sufficient, that they get away with too much, don't train to the level required, and don't quite instill the level of professionalism required, do we blame the players that don't know any differently and have been taught to act this way from the moment they were drafted, or do we blame the players simply because they're footballers on high salaries? I almost exclusively foot the blame onto the football club. I acknowledge that it is clearly trying to turn the tide, but it shouldn't have been the way it was for as long as it was. The club had dire facilities for decades and it wasn't addressed. The clubs finances haven't been secured until just recently, and even still we are dead last when it comes to things like social media. Our President said that, despite on-field problems, our membership has only dropped off a bit, as if to suggest that on-field performance dictates membership numbers. Someone started a thread earlier this year about membership numbers and why they had fallen, and everyone got on his/her back. I think we need to go beyond the playing group and start asking series questions about the club. I don't trust a word that comes out of anyone's mouth, and I am not longer instilling blind faith in anyone anymore, including players, young and old. It's simply results. I'll still be at the games, but beyond that, they'll only truly get my support once they start acting like a professional outlet. In that regard, boy do they have a long way to go. Again, I'll ask: why, if it is the case, are senior players revolting against the current regime? It's incomprehensible.

  36. Yes and no. We should continue with those we have chosen but we need to get them help. Sewell, Black, and Hayes in FA.

  37. Even if this was the case, the players are still being paid to do a job. They need to either stand up and be counted = resign and walk away, or do the job they're being paid to do. These are professional footballers earning the sort of money most of us can only dream about. If the players don't care enough about the supporrters to give their all I don't want them at the club. I'm tired of this stuff. Get on and do the job or leave.

  38. .Indeed. Stay away from the damn players, Don. If you want to know the mood of the players, do it through the appropriate proxy like Craig or Schwab. If the players don't trust Schwab either then show him the door. I fear we're going to end up with "we listened to the wrong people" all over again.

  39. Well if Neeld gets the sack before the end of next season I will seriously question whether it is worth continiuing in my support of the MFC. I cannot comprehend how this might happen even if we go 0-22 this year. I would sooner see Schwab, Connolly & Royal shown the door and perhaps even as spill of the board before Neeld got the chop. You don't turn around a 40 year old rotten culture overnight. You either back Neeld to do it (and wear the crap that goes with it along the way) or you second-guess yourself and continue to wallow in the medicority of near-enough is good enough.
    2 points
  40. Yup. But then it's gone so far past him it's now not worth persisting. Watching his little brother run around proved that for me. He's such a small guy, under Neeld's system of just go in hard and forget the rest he was always going to suffer. He's an outside player playing in a team with no outside game. Stick a fork in him, Green, Moloney, Sylvia... They're finished at MFC.

  41. True, but where does the collateral damage stop? What if Frawley and Jones want out too? What if Trengove, Howe, Watts and Blease are sick of playing for a bottom feeding team? What if Clark thinks "well I got my millions and nobody else seems to give a sh*t, so why bother"? You can't throw the baby out with the bath water. There are ways of going about it, and for years now, we've gone about it in the least dignified way.

  42. Unfortunately history shows that inflammatory innuendo and rumours are much more compelling to the masses than any sophisticated analysis of established facts/evidence. A zero from eight start makes it pretty easy for the commentators to generate such innuendo and rumour. And that makes for interesting news and drama. It's more interesting than saying we have a new coach who's trying to introduce a professionalism and hardness into a youngish list that's never experienced it before, and we're only 8 games into the new era.

I have nothing personal against the bloke but he didn't fill me with a lot of confidence . I got the impression that he wanted to say a little bit more but for obvious reasons didn't . 45. In regard to your letter to supporters and with respect Mr President. I acknowledge that the financial side of the club has been dealt with fairly well. However, the football side of the club is a mess – I particularly reject the criticism that the players are responsible because they have trouble learning a ‘new game plan’. The playing list is of a similar talent to any other club, when allowance is made for age, experience, etc etc. If they are not, then why did the club recruit them in the first place? The so-called ‘new game plan’ is out of date and already shown to be unsuccessful except in most unusual circumstances. Clubs such as Essendon, Geelong, Adelaide, Richmond, etc., have already adopted a much better style of game – Geelong being the most successful and obvious example. Future success for MFC depends on moving further forward in this direction. In regard to your attempted defence of the current football department, in particular, is it true, as rumoured, that MFC interviewed only one inexperienced assistant coach – Mark Neeld – and if so, why, when there were other options? It is also not acceptable to say that more time is needed to learn a ‘new game plan’ – MFC has had too much time already, when other clubs have made small changes to their ‘game plans’ with reasonable success and apparently reasonable future prospects. So Mr President, I do not accept the majority of your letter and I expect better from the club, and quickly, especially given that I have been supporting the club for over 50 years!.

  47. At least someone has come out and said something. The board needs to back Neeld to the hilt last thing we need is more instability let's hope we follow the right path this time.

  48. Chris Scott takes over a hardened Geelong side and wins a premiership in his first year. This year, he loses a few seniors players in Ling, Ottens, Milburn and Mooney and now look, they are a far cry from the dominant Geelong over the past 5 years. Previous coaching administrations build momentum. Fact.
