Rather than start another Yze bashing thread (although I know it will turn into one ), I'd like to know where people think his best position is?

It's fairly evident that Yze is part of Bailey's best 22, due to his elevation to the leadership group. Despite what most people have said, I actually thought Yze had a good season last year - when he actually stepped onto the park. Had hauls of 30+ possessions and still kicked some clutch goals.

So where would you like him to play in 2008?

Half back - setting up the plays

Wing/On ball

Forward pocket specialist.

I think Bailey should seriously consider playing him on the wing. Apparently his fit and firing and he still possesses a lethal left foot - (after watching the Port and Bulldogs games on foxtel this weekend) so his service to Neitz, Robbo, bate etc will be silver! Too often the delivery to our forwards last year was total rubbish and too disorganised.

I think Yze will have a solid year in 2008.

I would float him between forward pocket, wing and bench.

If fit and enthusiastic I would definitely have him in my side. He has the x-factor to be able to turn a game.

Well now you stole my thunder...

Forward is where he should play. Far too unaccountable to play down back and not good enough to play in the midfield anymore (too much competition for spots as well).

We need small forwards who can apply pressure on defenders. If Yze can learn to do that, he'll be a very dangerous and important player for us. But then we've been waiting to see him learn for so long... maybe Bailey can bring that change in him.

It depends on who he's displacing...

It'd be a shame to drop an in-form and hard-working Maric from a pocket just because we can't find a home for Ooze. Likewise, if Buckley or Bode or one of those guys is kicking ass running out of the backline, I'd hope they'd persevere with them as long as possible...

The fact he's in the leadership group suggests he's going to be played as often as possible, just like under Daniher. But I just don't see him having the legs for the midfield anymore, as much as he smashed them through the guts at Sandy.

I'm going to be boring and say he'll probably end up filling whatever hole needs to be filled in the small-man department. Playing a loose rebounding defender role, or a forward pocket. So nothing new here.

He would be a dangerous forward, but I don't know if there will be as many opportunities there for him this year.

I think DB should seriously consider sending him back to the half-back line where he was immensely successful five or six years ago. Every team has a creative, running-type player there these days and Adem certainly fits into this mould.

Fitness may be the only question mark with this position.

If he still capable, whereever he can add value to MFC. He may be pinch hitting roles this year. If he is not up to scratch then he will provide leadership to young players by example through dishing out bone jarring tackles on the opposition at TBO.

If he's a regular in the 22 this year, he'll be coming off the bench to play FP/HFF when someone needs a rest. He could still be a handy player if he gets his attitude right (not counting on it) but he wont be a vital one.

Even if he has a good season, I'll take an educated guess and say there's a fair chance he'll retire at the end of the year. From a sentimental point of view it'd be good to see him get his attitude right and become a regular contributer, but considering he wont be around much longer, I actually hope someone younger steps up and takes his place. We'll be a better side for it in the long run.

Gut feel tells me perhaps off half back in a creative role, but can see Bailey designating him to fill gaps which makes it very hard for Yze to maintain form.

I think with Addam Maric, Austin ‘Aussie’ Wonaeamirri and Farmer as possible forward crumbers, it could get over crowded down there. ‘Aussie as a back pocket perhaps ??

I agree with the above that he is not the premiership future but we have him for one more year, and he seems hell bent on showing he has still got it.

Will still be handy if we are winning the ball out of the middle.

Yze's best position for our future is concerned is as a hurdle. He'll be put in the way of the young'uns forcing them to lift their game to overtake him for a senior spot.

"Farmer" huh?? is this a new nickname to somebody...but yeah, back to the topic, i think Yze will not be placed in the pocket too often depending on the development of Aussie and Marric....i like this revolutionary idea of putting Aussie in the backline as a super speedy defender to beat the super speedy forwards...but Yze could be put anywhere, why dont we use a player who has experianced a lot of positions in different ways depending on the oponents....when needed, he could add spark into the forward line, or how about putting him on the wing to give somebody a break, or off the half back line, giving some expreriance to a young defense...whatever DB does will be exelantey!!

Wouldn't be in my best 22, but as to where he plays will depend on DB's gameplan. Not too many teams play with a 6 man forwardline, so it's conceivable that Yze could play as a creative loose half back, with license to push forward.

Quite a few people feel that Yze will be needed less as we now have Maric & Aussie.

It is rare that several first year players have a significant impact in the same team. Whilst there are outstanding efforts ala Davey, Selwood, etc they are the exception rather than the rule.

The other thing to remember is that Aussie is not even on our senior list yet and won't be until when have a long term injury.

I'm not sure why so many people hate Yze now.................he has been a great contributor over the years and was injured last year (just like half the list).

I think now his over his injury and has had time to freshen up, he could be a very dangerous player wherever he plays.

Now i'm pointing out the obvious here, but Yze has never had the body shape to be a crash and bash player......that's why it confuses me so much when he is bagged about it all the time.............it's not like bash and crash was part of his game and then he lost it................he never had it from day 1..................so with that in mind i don't see any reason why a fully fit Yze can't get back to his best..................we need to stop looking at the negatives and look at what a fantastic player he is...................i wouldn't be surprised if he could get into nearly any starting list in the afl.

I'd have him in the FP.

If he is in form in that position I'd keep him there over Maric and the other kids.

Unless we're having another poor year I believe in playing the best team possible, and not dropping older guys simply to play younger guys.

He can still be a very good small forward if he is fit and pulls his finger out and chases, tackles and doesn't always soccer it off the ground etc. He is too slow for midfield or the backline now.

He has never been in the side because of his physical aggression.................he was in the team for his x factor and skills and because he is a playmaker.........the fact that he doesn't put his head over the ball doesn't mean that he can't get back to his best............when he was regarded as one of our best players, he still didn't put his head over the ball. The game is faster and there is more and more focus on player accountability and applying pressure on the ball carrier when you dont have the ball. Yze gets found out there. If he cant do the above and be committed to a contested ball then he is going to know TBO far better than he does now.

Have to agree with Rhino here. A major factor in the success of the Brisbane Lions, was that Matthews has never tolerated a player not putting his body over the ball. They had many lightly framed players such as Hart, Ashcroft, McRea, Power and Lappin, all of whom put their body on the line when needed. Here's hoping the DB shares the same mantra as Matthews.

Current contract (3 years) finishes at the end of the year.
