Melbourne 8.16.64 defeated Collingwood 8.12.60

The next one's been a long time coming!

I listened to it on the family radiogram with the twelve inch speaker.

I was twelve years old at the time and I can tell you it's certainly been a long time...

I was ten and was lucky enough to be there. I was in hospital for 2nd semi and had to get permission to go!

Can still remember Gabba's run and goal as was right in line with the goal from where we were on the wing and the ball was bouncing all over the place!!

Certainly way way too long ago for all MFC lovers

I was minus 24 years old.

Does your birthday fall on the same day each year?

On the same date yes, but not on the same day.

neither is the anzac day clash that essendon and collingwood 'own'.

JJC i am assuming that because it wasnt final 8 there were only 3 rounds of finals played, so finals were still a strictly September affair, but only 3 weeks of it...

so 1 v 2 week one for a spot in the final,

3 v 4 week two for a spot in the prelim

L1 v W2 week 3 for a spot in the GF

W1 v W3 in the grand final

does that look right?

Final Five

Week 1 - Qualifying final (2v3) and Elimination Final (4v5)

Week 2 - First Semi (QF Loser v EF Winner) and Second Semi (1st v QF Winner)

Week 3 - Preliminary Final (FS Winner v SS Loser)

Week 4 - Grand Final

Top 4 can never be over 4 weeks unless there is a home & away round or a draw (in those days any final was replayed). Otherwise it is the same as above with Week 1 deleted.

so assuming the winner of the SS goes straight to the GF?

Yes.

I've never heard of the 1 match per week final four but I could be wrong. Seems almost to penalise the best team with only 2 games in a month.

Didnt the final five come in in the early 70's?

1972 apparently (source is Wikipedia but it sounds about right). Well before my time - I grew up with the final five then the shortlived final six.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

A couple of intrepid Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock for the midweek Preseason Training Session to bring you the following observations. Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
